Who here has thrown away their plastic cases for CD's so they could store their CD's in enormous binders?
Any regrets? Are CD's going the way of the 8-track?
I currently use a Bose Sound Dock and don't have a stereo anymore.
-
I was thinking about this last night after Venerable and I spent 4+ hours at Amoeba...
What could I get for my CD collection?
Whenever I buy a CD, I rip the disc into my music library, copy to my MP3 player, then plug my MP3 player into its stereo dock, for playback through my stereo. The CD then goes on the CD shelf, never to be listened to again. Even my car stereo plays MP3 CD's...
-
I still have nearly all of the original CD cases and album covers / liner notes. Even though it takes up a lot of valuable apartment space, it's hard for me to let go. We'll see if my recent forays into eMusic and iTunes change these habits.
-
Like dhinojwala, I have a hard time letting go. Still, I've given myself the resolution of only purchasing CDs this year if 1) it's an artist I've already listened to and thus have CDs or 2) the artist isn't available on eMusic. I've also been refusing the buy or keep any singles or EPs: too much space was taken up for discs with too few songs.
However, as a near obsessive-compulsive about alphabetizing my CDs, the thought of only using huge binders drives me mad. I've never gone and route, and I never will.
-
For me, it's not so much a matter of not being able to let go of, it's much more a matter of smart storage.
Yes, it's great to be able to rip your discs to MP3s but your quality goes down (which can be barely noticable if done properly with all the right equipment) but you still also chance losing them or having them corrupted in some manner. It's just the convenience of being able to make that disc much more portable.
Keeping the disc within the case not only protects the original disc and art work, it also helps to maintain the value. There are still a lot of us out there who must have the whole package, not just the disc or a file. At least, for the releases that we personally really value.
Regarding those travel cases, I refuse to use them anymore. Use to use them when I was spending loads of time in Ocean City. Made for an easy way to haul loads of CDs to listen to on the road and while in town. Then eventually I noticed that the inks (or whatever they are) were sticking to the plastic. Not only did it ruin the look of the CD, I'm afraid that it may eventually damage the listening portion of the discs themselves.
So, no more removing the discs from their little plastic or cardboard homes for any long periods of time for me!

Having read fairly good reviews of emusic on this board, I'm considering just going with them from now on. Personally, I'm having a hard time getting rid of my CD's. There are CD's that I have owned since 1991.
-
have you consider using lala in order to trade cds? emusic is great but it only fills in the gaps for me...
the biggest flash point on lala right now is a very small and is always the case a very vocal group that want the option to get only cds with complete artwork. personally, i'm artwork only and most of the time I get CDs with the booklet and tray card. there are some that see red when only the booklet arrives....
-
Why do you guys want to get rid of cd's?
-
It's actually the smart storage idea that makes me want to get rid of mine.
We had a fire in our apt building back in '05, and it was because I had my MP3s burned to DVDs and stored at someone elses house that I really began to think about just why I was keeping the CDs. They wouldn't have survived the fire (or a flood, for that matter), but smart digital backup and storage will last forever.
-
I only get rid of CDs that I never ever listen to, or like I said above, only have a handful of songs on it so that it doesn't warrant keeping. Still, before every lala trade, I rip the CDs down and save the digital copy.
-
What percentage of people (especially nonsmokers) actually have their houses burn down?
-
What percentage of people can predict the future?
And faulty appliances are the leading cause of house fires. How mayn people have appliances in the their house?
Ours was actually started by a neighbor who fell asleep with candles burning...

Until the harddrive crashes or some other digital disaster.
But basically, we are of the same mind set in the sense that it's always good to have a backup. A luxury and true it might be easier to haul your entire music collection out at the sound of the fire alarm but that may not be the thing you think to take.
The wandering minds of the musically anal retentive. :D

I am falling back into the hard CD real thing camp. And I am planning on filling in huge gaps in my collection with lala. I have tons of crappy CDs lying around, looking for a better home with someboday else. And frankly, I need to fill in the holes of my Bowie collection. Fair trade if you ask me.
Hey kosmo, can you paste the link to the lala thread, so i can re-reead what others say about it. Thanks!

Jag Said:

If you only have one copy, then that's not smart digital back up (and you should keep your CDs).
But if you keep one copy on a Hard Drive, one copy on an external drive (or external MP3 player) and one copy on a permanent storage unit (like DVDs) in a different location AND you back up regularly (even once every 6 months), then you have nothing to worry about.
-
....unless they are all in one place when the big one hits. Then it's ground zero for all methods.
-Edit-
Oh, you did say 'in a different location'...which could save your ass...or, at least, your music collection.
-
Uh-oh...looks like somebody has another t-shirt coming! How many are you up to now, Kosmo? I've got two of the shirts, but most of my real world friends are obsessive enough to sign up, so I think I'm stuck for a while.

But if the big one hits, the CDs would presumably be destroyed as well....
Anyhow, in my instance, they're not. The DVDs are in So Cal, the Hardrive/Mp3/External HD are all in No Cal.
Now if California ceases to exist at some point, then I've got bigger problems then my music collection being erradicated, I've likely got to face my maker at The Rapture.
-
Yes, I meant too that the CDs would also go.
If the entire West goes, hopefully, you will be visiting us on the East Coast (unless that goes too) and you have enough friends who can help get you back on your feet again and get your ears (and everything else) back in the swing of things.

Sorry Kosmo, already signed up, can i still get you credit?
-
i'm one of those people who still collect albums. I want the artwork and everything.
MP3 players are great for traveling, but I honestly am still all about just putting in a cd and letting the whole thing play.
-
Dupek, are you hitting on me?
I fully agree with you about the draft...unfortunately. Plus, with this police state mentality slamming down on us, I bet you they won't lower the drinking age this time around either. Not that that is the most important aspect of the whole thing.
-
i still get cds. . although after many years, i've determined that rykodisc really screwed with people by using crappy materials that broke in a few years.
-
sorry to say but pic surly posted was shall we safe not very work safe, even with all the naughty bits hidden...

And it was a bit disturbing...
But not as disturbing as this:

redsock as far as which forum post deals with the complete package, this has been debated almost since lala went public. I'm not sure if outside links into the lala forum will work.... so look for the one that is entitled "For the first time today, I had to question whether lala is worth it"
It of course kicked off several other whiny CD artwork threads.
Basically, lala only guarantees that a CD will be playable when it arrives, something that in 258 incoming CDs has only happen once for me. A CD arrived broke courtesy the USPS. I got one truly trashed CD, that unfortunately played despite it's condition.
lala allows people the option of getting CDs with artwork, but in order to ship to a artwork preferred only the booklet is required to fulfill the trade. But, it's not guaranteed and some have gotten CDs without the required booklet, which hasn't been a problem for me.
The minute the new policy was announced the moaning began... Be it over not being able to get the complete product, the occasional folded tray card, you name it those who have dug in their heels have kept alive the "Artwork Wars" alive and kickin' since the policy was set.
lala reasoning behind the booklet only requirement was to allowed those who keep CDs in binders and often toss the tray card to trade.
Thankfully due to the fact that most of the CDs I get are of the type collectors buy and tend to keep in their jewel cases so getting the booklet and tray card hasn't been a problem for me. Plus, the CDs are in much better condition.
-
Econo, I did exactly what you're thinking about. I tossed out all the jewel cases, and kept the booklet and CD and put it all in a binder. All of my music is stored on a hard drive now anyway, so the CDs are really just a backup. My whole CD collection now takes up the space of a few books, whereas it used to take many shelves.
It's a bad idea to get rid of the CDs themselves. Besides the backup thing, as data storage gets cheaper you may eventually wish to convert to lossless, as I am now doing. But jewel cases offer no better storage than a good binder.
If for some reason I feel I need jewel cases again, I could always just get some. But the only reason I could imagine for that is if I someday wanted to resell the CDs. Jewel cases are hideous. I haven't missed them at all!

Here's the beef:
Those 2 tiny corner hinge tabs. Why do they always snap off at the slightest whim? Were they purposely designed that way?
ding ding ding! consumerism 101: don't design yourself out of a future market, especially with a product like music that you'll continue wanting for a long time (we're still buying beatles and elvis albums), i.e. long after one incarnation of it has "accidentally" broken. and by accidental, i mean less-than-normal usage.
designed obsolescence really pisses me off.

i keep the liner notes for older discs and usually keep the whole case for discs bought in the last 2 years or so. i have been doing that for a while. the ol' 400 disc needs a re-racking w/ some of it just thrown in the trash and some to be put in blank cd spindles, no doubt rarely to be seen again. i play cds at home and in the car. i play them in the car b/c i feel like the price of an adpater is just a ripoff designed to take adavantage of the situation. i play them at home b/c they sound a lot better. all cds go directly on the computer before they can get scratched.
question: do you have any antecdotes about the quality of ipod (rca w/ headphone end) cords for your home stereo? maybe mine is just junk b/c the sound quality difference b/t a cd playing vs. an ipod is easily discernable. should that not be the case?
-
the quality of sound from an Ipod to a stereo is vastly diminished compared with a CD. Even an Ipod vs a home computer playing MP3s shows a marked reduction in sound quality. Apple has invested a lot of effort into the design and ergonomics of the Ipod, not so much into fidelity.
At DJ nights, I can always tell when someone is using an Ipod, because the sound is so flat. If you want to play MP3s at home, you're better off playing them from your computer, either with a decent cord connection or Airtunes.

I get pretty much all of my music on iTunes these days. If I actually do buy a CD, I rip it as soon as I get a chance and the CD and its case go into a box with all the others.
