-
Sweet, I get to test the "Add to Your Ignore List" of the new forum.
And with that, Go Ducks!
-
Anaheim vs. Detroit for the Cup. Montreal gets the winner in the NHL Pro Bowl.
-
Go Kings! This season has got to be better than last season.

Nope, you can only personally ignore threads, but if you like a thread, the forum will allow you to ignore people in the thread.
-
actually I think the ignore feature only blocks private messages
-
Thanks a lot, buzz kill.
-
you're welcome!
-
though i have been to insanely busy to look at many of the off-season happenings, i will be truely happy when the season starts.
and isnt it soon, there are a couple games in Europe either next weekend or the weekend after.
-
Have any of you been fiercely working on your mullet in anticipation?
-
yes, all of us
-
I wish there was a rookie only playoff series...

Washington 7 Philly 0
I don't wish the NHL was so lame they had to book the 'world's greatest arena rock band', Def Leppard for a opening day 'spectacular'.

They could have at least booked AC/DC who are still actually played at games.

I just tested it. You're right.

The season starts with games in Stockhold (Ottawa vs Pittsburgh) and Prague (NYR vs Tampa).
Here's a fantastic bit of serendipity. We booked our vacation to Munich and Prague months ago. So imagine my surprise when we realized we'd be in Prague for both the NYR/Tampa games. Our friend (who's going with us) works for the NCAA and has good connections. Good enough to get us tickets for one of the games there. Should be fun.
People needing a pre-season fix can watch MSG on cable tonite to catch the Sens and Rangers (they played on Sat. Sloppy game but fun to watch). Check StubHub for cheap preseason Caps tix. We grabbed a pair for $11 each (plus s/c) for front row club seats.
Having said that, a few comments about the upcoming season:
- as much as I'd love to see my Habs pull it off this season, I still think last year was an anomaly. They'll finish 5th overall.
- no one in the east can match the west. Look for the winner to come from there. I think the Wings will repeat.
- watch for Chicago and Tampa. They're going to be seriously fun to watch. Some very talented kids on those teams.
- enjoy the hockey while you can. I'm betting on another lockout in four years when the current CBA expires.

I was just reading they are looking to expand by 2012, they even mentioned Portland (no chance in hell here though I think). Hopefully expansion plans would lead to a short lockout.

I think a lot depends on how well the KHL does in the next couple years.
People kinda sleep on it as just a renamed Russian Super League, but it now also includes teams from Latvia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus. They are also planning on expanding into other countries like Sweden, Finland, Czech Rep., Ukraine, and Germany.
Quality teams like Frölunda and Kärpät have been asked to join.
I don't think the owners will be so likely to let it go to another lockout.

Smartest thing said yet.
-
i agree and go further with no one in the west can match the wings

Goalies are always the great equalizer in hockey. If Giguere stood on his head in front of a Niedermayer/Pronger-lead defense, they could win a series against the Wings.
-
i can qualify it with 'in lieu of other-worldly goalies displays and massive injuries', but i figure thats implied before the first puck is dropped

OK then yes. Barring an avalanche wiping out half the team, no team on talent alone can touch Detroit's skaters.
-
LET'S GO FLYERS!
-
games start tonight folks. Leafs/Wings and Bruins/Avs on Versus. cant wait to see how many HD games Dish will offer this year.
and i also cant believe i ended up with Ovechkin, Malkin and Zetterberg on one of my fantasy teams. in a 10 team league no less.
-

Are you playing with idiots? That's insane (especially if your league gives points for +/-)!

i got zetterburg and Ovechkin in the draft, i traded for Malkin with Kaberle/Savard/Backstrom.

If the other person needed help across the board, that's a fair trade for both sides. Savard isn't a game changer in real-life but his fantasy numbers are always top-shelf.
-
This thread was interesting till you started with the fantasy league shit...bye.
Are we sure there isn't a 'thread ingore' option?

i'm contemplating getting home ice on directv, price seems reasonable, and it's gonna have a fair amount of hd games every week. . .while it wouldn't necessarily help me with sharks games, since they are local, i would like to get more pens games. . .
let's hope the wings/hawks game at wrigley looks just as good as the pens/sabres game last year. that game even got the sports guy to start watching hockey again.

it was just a quick mention, dont worry, I dont live fantasy, i just had my draft last night.
you think the Caps can make the playoffs again, mank?

as i noticed with Dish last year, the RSNs they had in HD, which werent too many last year, were the HD games they were showing. They have added a lot since spring (including NESN) so i am hoping there are at least 3 a night. Last year it would only be one a night or maybe 2.
Dish had tons of HD Pens games last year.

Im just disgusted to learn that Palin is dropping the puck at the Flyers/Rangers game Saturday night. Im right now thinking of all the bad things that could go wrong (or hope go wrong).
-
Palin dropping the puck sickens me. Apparently she is good spokesperson for hockey and there's no political agenda. I don't buy it. At least the Phightins took Game 1.

yeah i dont buy it either - but on another note - there are 4 Obama rallies going on tomorrow in Philly! Those Flyers fans might be really riled up way before the puck is even dropped.
-
I don't know who should be more embarrassed...
The NHL for hiring Def Leppard to 'kick off' the season?
Or the lead singer, either way ... FAIL

When will pro sports leagues realize music and sport spectaculars don't mix?
-
So the Flyers shit the bed in SD. I should have just gone to bed early.
-
I went to see Wings/Hurricanes Monday night. Front row behind penalty box. Have pictures with Brind'Amour in the box. Kinda cool. 3-1 Wings, great tight game.
That is all.
/nhl report

Does anyone have NHL GameCenter? Do they show caps games on there, or are they blacked out since it is on CSN?
-
I have NHL Center Ice, most Caps games are blacked out, but their not worth watching unless they're playing the Penguins, so it really doesnt matter to me.
-
reasons I watch hockey:
<img src="http://www.nationalpost.com/sports/610671.bin?size=404x272" alt=" - " />
<img src="http://yinzer24.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/nhlmull_jagr_jaromir.jpg" alt=" - " />
-
Right... If Pittsburgh is so great, why are so many exported to DC?
-
barry melrose is in tampa and jagr isnt even in america
-
How sweet was it to see the Caps 3-0 down to the flightless birds of mulletville only to come back and take it 4-3????
-
Better reason to watch hockey
<img src="http://d.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20081017/capt.a416dd06493446b281ad49ebce2dfd5b.capitals_penguins_hockey_pagp106.jpg" alt=" - " />
Fleury is gonna be good once he realizes the '84 Lumber' on the boards behind him is for a hardware store and not another over-hyped rookie center he hasn't seen in the locker room.
-
MAN how about those Boston Bruins! Having the same record as the Red Wings at Thanksgiving is something to be happy about for sure!
just thought i'd say that.

I would be happier about it if it meant that both teams sucked, but because of the Red Wings not the Bruins. Just another season gone bad for me with all the injuries the Blues are suffering.
-
We may be on our second GM already, but no one can touch this:

-

i'm going to the caps game tomorrow night, and we should have about an hour & a half to kill beforehand to grab dinner & drinks. can anyone suggest their favorite / preferred restaurants or bars for the occasion? thanks!
-
By the way, since I'm coming up for Thievery in a few weekends, anyone have an interest in splitting some tickets to Red Wings/Caps on 1/31 @ 12:30? Fair warning: I will be in a Red Wings sweater and fairly obnoxious.

i'm a fan of RFD's, 810 7th St NW. huge beer selection (over 200?), and their buffalo burger is solid, be sure to ask for it rare or med-rare at most. can get kinda loud pre-game, and the ambiance doesn't have much going for it... it's still my stand-by, tho.

Good call.
The problem will be most places will be so packed that by waiting on a table the hour and half will easily be killed before you finish a meal.
Fado's next door to RFD is good too, if you're down for an Irish Bar with decent food.
If you get there at the right time (early) Matchbox has a good beer selection and wood fired pizzas. The wait time for a table could be 45 minutes in a very crowded bar area.
If you're looking for 'cuisine' over just food, Rosa Mexicano across from the arena is pricey for what it is, but good. Proof on G street has a huge wine list and foods to complement. Zatinya has some tasty mezze.
I'd probably go a few blocks over near the old 9:30 club spot and hit Gordon Biersch or Ella's. They won't be as crazy crowded as Chinatown and Penn Quarter.

jaleo is one of the best places to eat in dc. i'll be there saturday
-
thanks for the suggestions! let's go CAPS ;D
