http://modblog.bmezine.com/category/extreme/ (http://modblog.bmezine.com/category/extreme/) (mebee just a little bit un werksaf)
Apparently there's just not enough pain to go around in the western world.
-
apparently, not everyone has the same ideas about pain and its role in their lives. whodathunkit?
if you looked around that site a bit more, you would've found this picture (http://modblog.bmezine.com/2007/04/14/yanking-my-chain/) from a few days back.
-
makes me feel like SUCH a wuss.
-
Believe me, I've got enough pain for one lifetime. I don't want to borrow any more.

Yowch!
Thatguy, have you seen the film ICHI THE KILLER ? Something tells me you would like it.
-
like i said, not everyone feels the same about pain. some like it, some love it, some don't feel it, some need it to get off, some put up with it temporarily to get a long term result, some feel it makes you stronger.
i know my relationship with pain, but i can't speak for anyone else's. it's none of my business, as long as nobody is getting hurt without their consent. whatever floats your boat, different drum, etc.
i own ichi the killer. i've seen way more intense stuff in person and for real than they fake in that movie, but it's alright.

A very libertarian view. You talk the talk.
But still, I think you're a rather twisted individual. No offense. But I'm thinking you get off on other's shocked opinions vis your appearance..? I also wonder what you will find shocking about youth culture thirty years from now when you're off the shelf?

I'm thinking no.

Some years back, I was up early on a saturday and saw parts of a show on PBS about body modification. Thatguy was on it, suggest finding it, it was very enlightening.
-
having spoken a few times with josh, he's always striked me as very serene and peaceful - not someone who is in-your-face looking to (or even caring about) other people's reactions. maybe you're projecting? just because that's the only justification you can come up with for body mods doesn't mean that it is in fact the reason that people chose to live how they live.
But I'm thinking you get off on other's shocked opinions vis your appearance..?
how is this different than posting oh-so-shocking crap on a message board and getting off on other people's reactions? at least we know for a fact that THAT is a known M.O. around here...
talk about pot vs. kettle!

If I had wanted to hear from an asshole...

If he was really in it for the pain he would sign up for a hitch in the Marines and do a couple of tours in Afghanistan? But that would be too self sacrificing.
-
speaking of (actually, to) assholes: ever consider that not all things are equivalent? any given pain is not like every other pain? just because you like one pain doesn't mean you like them all?
oh, wait, you were being childish and 'controversial' - my bad. carry on.
-
I can't believe I once rated you 5 stars.

i know this is just bait, but i have a few quick thoughts:
you are entitled to your opinions, and i take no offense. i only allow the opinions of a very few people to have any impact on my world and my feelings, and you're nowhere near that short list. you know no more about me than what i have shared here, which is essentially nothing. why should i be offended by what a stranger thinks about me? in the same vein, why should i "get off" on what a stranger thinks about me?
my motivations for my choices regarding my body are purely internal, and have nothing to do with anyone but myself. if everyone in the world looked like me, i'd do what i do. if i was the only one in the world that looked like me, i'd do what i do. i accept the consequences of my choices, which include a great deal of attention from strangers, but i definitely do not do what i do because of that. if it makes me twisted to be true to myself, then i'm twisted.
if you had any concept of the amount of attention i draw on a daily basis, you would realize that there's no way anyone could "get off" on it. i once tried to keep a diary of every time someone pointed, whispered, stared, asked a question, or any such thing. after about two hours and over 100 entries, i stopped. and that was just out running errands. on a night at work, it would be impossible to keep track. that's what i get, and that's fine with me. some days i would rather blend in and avoid that attention, but i have no regrets.
i believe that in order to have meaningful relationships with other people, you must first be true to yourself. if i denied or suppressed my drive to modify my body, i would be basing everything else in my life on lies.
"i never wanted to be different. i just wanted to be me."

That's pretty much what I was going to say, only with less words.
I've always had the impression that thatguy finds inner-peace with his outward appearance. One would get that after one conversation with the man.

I wish more people, myself included, would remember this approach when participating on boards.

The funny thing about Josh is that though he might seem physically intimidating at first, it's pretty easy to get beyond the physical appearance quickly. I think when someone is real and genuine, that's what happens, and Josh is way more real to me than most people I ever meet. Although I have no real desire to get tattoos (ok, maybe one or 2 would be cool), I am fascinated by the idea of people that are so in tune with themselves that it becomes communication and self-expression. For a while in the 90's I think it was just something cool to do...but when it's coming from someone that is genuine, body art takes on a whole other meaning. I would never think of someone like Josh as being a "rather wisted individual"...that's what happens when you judge a book by its cover. Open it up and read it a bit, then make a decision. I wish more people were like Josh in being comfortable with themselves and really KNOWING who they are...being self-aware and wanting to crack open one's own psyche are qualities that are sorely lacking in many people I know.

Intimidating????....I think thatguy is rather cute actually!
-
Intimidating to most (probably)...cute to others :)
-
Cute is what he aims for :p
-
Whenever I see him I just want to mush his little cheeks and give him a noogie!
-
He has taken on "Gentle Giant" status in our house. Josh introduced himself to my kids during a soundcheck/Pancake Mountain taping, and as you can imagine, made a great impression. Since then they have seen his photo in the Post and on the web a couple of times. When one sees him and says, "There's Josh!" the other comes running. We should invite him to our next birthday party!
Actually, how about a children's book with a thatguy character who scares away the bad guys? Just like at the club!
-
Can you spell PERSONALITY CULT?
Kudos swellguy, you've got one going.
-
thank you to everyone with kind words.
all other words disregarded.
