Van Zandt Organizes 'Garage Band' Fest
Fri Jun 25, 1:24 PM ET
NEW YORK - Do you remember "Hullaballo"? "Upbeat"? "Shindig"? Those classic '60s rock television shows inspired Little Steven Van Zandt (news)'s latest project â?? a one-day "garage band" festival featuring the godfathers of garage rock and their offspring.
The old guard at "The International Underground Garage Festival" includes the reunited New York Dolls, Iggy Pop (news) & the Stooges, and Bo Diddley, Van Zandt announced Friday. The new kids feature the Strokes, the Raveonettes and the Chesterfield Kings.
The appearance by seminal punkers the Dolls â?? or at least surviving members David Johansen, Arthur Kane and Syl Sylvain â?? will be their first in the United States after a date in England.
Many of the other bands at the Aug. 14 show on Randall's Island in New York City were unearthed by Van Zandt for his nationally syndicated "Underground Garage" radio show.
"I've always wanted to do a rock and roll festival in the old style of Alan Freed, Shindig, Hullabaloo, and all of those early shows," said Van Zandt, whose other jobs include guitarist for Bruce Springsteen (news) and consigliere Silvio Dante on "The Sopranos (news - web sites)."
Tickets for the show, priced at $20, went on sale Friday. Van Zandt promised concertgoers "one giant B-movie beach party complete with monsters and aliens" â?? although he offered one caveat.
"I am having a bit of trouble getting the monsters and aliens on board," he said. "It's their agents that kill you."

Bo Diddley is still alive? He must be ancient by now. If he can still play, I'll be there.
-
*checks* Nope, still a girl.
Also, I've read elsewhere that the Hives may perform at this festival, too. Nothing on their official website yet, but there aren't any tour stops scheduled either.

me and the lady will definitely be going, we could take a pair up there, anyone but Markie really ;)

I'd absolutely love to go.
It's a Saturday so don't have to worry about taking a day off but don't know if I can afford a trip to NYC. (I fucking hate being so grossly underpaid!) I could pitch in with a group of loons but can't afford to do it all on my own. Any band of loons looking for an extra, please keep me in mind. ;)

anyone know how randall's island is setup as a concert facility? is it an outdoor festival site? does it have a covered ampitheater? i don't do well in the summer heat all day long without some shelter from the sun. and august is nyc will probably be brutal humid as well.
and don't discount the romantics they are kicking it back to thier garage roots... the slick 80's stuff is long gone.

If anyone wants to in on getting a bus...

I have been to Randalls Island a number of times, and its NOT any kind of "concert facility".
Its basically just a big, field-ish place. There arent seats or any kind of permanent stage fixture there. not that I've seen anyway.
No trees either for that matter. a bif patch of grass is the best way to describe it.
I havent been there in 2 years or so, but i am mostly sure its still that way.
oh, and port a pots too, i didnt see a real bathroom the few times i've been there.
it was for raves though, so i may have just been a little "hazy" on a few minor details.
