Tomorrow (Monday) night at the Warehouse Next Door. Their album is one of my favorites of the year. Who else is going?
mp3s can be found here (http://jagjaguwar.com/catalog/jag70.htm)
-
what time do you think black mountain will begin their set?
-
you know i'll be there.
black mountain should go on around 11, probably a little after.

is anyone expecting a sell-out? i wouldn't be able to get down there until 11 or so
-
I'm planning on it. Sick baby at home though, so all bets are off.
-
How are you people able to go to shows that start at 11 and get to work the next morning, seemingly night after night? Y'all just amaze me.

try having a day job, booking, AND managing every show you book...without having a severe meth habit.
black mountain *should* sell out, but attendance is so shitty in DC, especially on mondays, that i'd actually be surprised if we hit 150 tonight.
-
hey remember that episode where grandpa simpson kept shrinking? shit, hope that doesnt happen to me
-
Mondays are awful...the one night of the week in which I sometimes bag a show I already have a ticket for just because it's so hard to get out...
In answer to Xavier, living 5 minutes from the DC clubs makes a big difference. I can usually be in bed by 12:30 or so...only about a half hour later than usual...

is attendance really that poor in DC? I am relocating in a month and am anxious to see how lesser known band shows will be attended, I always assumed attendance was mostly based on the size of the city
-
where are you going, pollard?
attendance is definitely not based on the size of the city. i've seen shows in nyc where there were less than 30 people on a weekend. attendance is based on a combination of numerous things, among them:
local draw/lack of local draw
current "hipness" of band
location of venue
comfortability of venue
how well or poorly promoted the show is
price
day of the week
competition
based on the poor attendance we've had at the warehouse and DC9 for many shows, i truly feel that attendance has declined, specifically among shows aimed at an older demographic. people simply don't come out to shows like they used to. pop-punk, emo, and indie-rock shows do well because that demographic tends to have more disposable income/time than those that are into -- this will sound elitist -- more challenging or underground music, like experimental, noise, jazz, psychedelia, stoner rock/doom metal, etc.
i could be wrong, but after booking, working, and attending nearly 300 shows a year for the last few years, this is what i've noticed.

Oy, what a great music town. There are tons of venues, and great bands nearly always go through Portland. Wow, bitchin'. I'm glad you're moving post-GBV, because what would a GBV show be without p011@rd?
-
We plan on being there. We'll make sure we don't day goodbye.
;)
Although it's actually a Drams show, ;)

good luck in portland, man. i love that city, and it has a better music community than dc. i've been out there a few times and always get a great vibe, and if i ever leave this coast, that's where i'm heading.
-
Portland gets 921 mm rain per year, DC gets 912 mm rain per year.

that's because most of the rain in portland is from a constant drizzle, whereas the rain here tends to be torrential, especially in the summer. and the weather is pretty much always between 50 and 70 out there.

thanks, I have thought that same thing for a while
as far as rain goes, I have been told it will start raining everyday in November and will stay that way through the winter into the spring
I am sure me and my sunny disposition will stop all that

there will be a solo tour sometime in the next year ;)
-
I could totally deal with that. That's why I'll be retiring to Seattle in about 30 years.

I'm thinking about moving to Portland, too, in the next year or so. I was just there a couple of weeks ago and fell in love with the place.
-
portland, oregon, eh? if all plans work out, you'd be one state north of me.

Maybe we were there at the same time? I was there for the Maximo Park concert. I wasn't impressed with the Roseland. But as I said, I loved the city. Keep in touch. I might want to ask you a bunch of questions once you are there.
-
dayum pollard
good luck with the move - portland is a great town - some friends lived there a few years ago and loved it
good CD stores also

thats the week i was there, didnt go to any shows, but I noticed they were playing
oh and thanks brennser, yeah there seemed to be a cd store every block, the best I saw being everyday music
-
everyday is good, but check out jackpot and anthem for the more obscure and esoteric.
and if you're into literature, powell's is the king of bookstores.
-
spent a wad of money at their Seattle store. They seemed to have more used cd's in their "recent arrivals" section than many used cd stores have in their whole store.

I actually was in 2 powells, downtown one is just huge

Downright awesome show! The experience was like an arena rock show within the cozy confines of the Warehouse.
-
Oh man, I am SO bummed. I had no idea this show was even happening. This band has been on my list of groups to check out. But I was so bagged from my weekend out of town (saw the High Dials and Sam Roberts!) that there was no way I could make it.
So how would you describe the music? The onstage performance?
-
One word:
"Rollicking" :cool:
By the time they played "No Satisfaction," near the end of the set, as an audience member you were either moving to the music, banging away at a tambourine provided by the band themselves, or had a smile on your face. I believe they performed the entire album plus a few others.
-
Excellent show. All three bands were great. The final encore, with like 14 people on stage, was a perfect ending. That was the best kind of music night because all the bands were great, the venue was hopping, and it was only eight bucks!
-
Truly a special night. Clearly these bands just love to play. For themselves. For each other. For their new friends in the crowd. It was one of those shows where the other bands hung out in front of the stage the whole night wildly dancing, yelling out the words, or stumbled onstage to play backup. Loved all three bands. Lady Hawke was a great discovery. Heartfelt songs and grinding guitars. Black Mountain was exactly as I expected them to be. Intense, swirling and soulful.
-
black mountain were one of the best new bands i've seen recently. they write epic songs that sound completely different from each other. amber's vocals are soulful, stephen's lead playing is fuzzy and varied, jeremy's analog synths add a whole other dimension to the sound, and the rhythm section is tight and thick. it's stoner rock without being "stoner rock" (their music is way beyond fu manchu or kyuss). they simply sound like a long-lost obscure psych band from 1971, yet they sound totally modern.
they're also incredibly nice folks, and they stayed over last night and watched my spacemen 3 bootleg video, getting wrecked and talking aboot vancouver and the coldplay tour (which they said was completely bizarre). new album and tour in the spring, and they wanna come back, so hopefully, they'll play the warehouse or DC9.

i have their jagjaguwaraarara cd and it didnt grab me. i think i may have pawned it alredee but if i find it i'll grab it and give another lissen. i feel excited to hear it evne if ive already herd it and didnt like it. sometimes 1st impresshuns are no good. sounds like a ridiculous evening at the warehouse. i stayed home and did nothing. ouch.
