Title: New Charlottesville AAA Station...why not DC?
Post by: bellenseb on January 24, 2007, 06:35:00 pm
When Classical 104.1 fled to public 90.9 the other day, 104.1 became the truly horrid GEORGE FM, which manages to more or less duplicate 107.3, 100.3 and 102.7, only do it in an even more boring way.

Is there really no market or appetite for a AAA-ish station in DC? IF the music isn't quite as blandly broad-appealing as a GEORGE, at least the demo would be much younger, and currently not catered to by anyone else at all. Not that the below station is my dream station or anything, but it would beat the pants off anything on the air in DC these days...and could provide a local connection with info, contents, etc. for venues like 9:30, Black Cat, Rock N Roll, Iota, Birchmere, Jammin Java etc.

BRAD: Well, long before I was involved, Saga Communications learned of this new signal opportunity and instituted a format study from Mark Ramsey and Mercury Research. The "hole" indicated a desire for a Triple A format, custom-designed for the Charlottesville market. The highest passion was for artists like Cure, Depeche Mode, Clash, and '90s Alt mainstays like Sublime, Nirvana, and even bands like Toadies or Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Our style of Triple A is a more focused on 25-44 and 30-somethings in particular. We do play Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and John Mellencamp (and even Van Morrison, The Beatles, and Bob Dylan) but more in a "respect the timeless artists" spice position. We also have a deep "image" category that can play anything from Lo-Fidelity All Stars to Velvet Underground to Lucinda Williams to Iggy Pop.

It has a weak signal, granted, but WRNR 103.1 out of Annapolis, is pretty much what you are asking for and it has terrible ratings.

It also feels like a retirement home for the mid 90s WHFS disc jockeys, much like 94.7.

Can't comment too much on the quality of RNR (since I can't get it in DC)...which is sort of the point. No one knows what kind of ratings a station like this would get since it's never been done here.

Are the ratings you cite Baltimore-market? They can pick up TMD there, too, AFAIK, so there's competition. How is the signal in Baltmore? Are the ratings 12+ or other demos?

94.7
 97.9
 100.3
 101.1
 102.7  (I think that's it)
 106.7

I have 6 more that are just blank.  If it had a decent signal, I'd be all over WRNR.

i only listen to radio in the car, and i spend 90% of my time on 106.7 with an occasional bounce to DC101 and NPR news during commercials.  i believe that i have pretty wide musical tastes, but i have yet to come across a music station that doesn't piss me off with every third selection.

are there any good college stations in the area?  i've been too lazy to check them out... any good shows?

Actually, I don't even see WRNR on either the current DC nor Baltimore ratings on fmqb.com, which shows the top 20+ stations in each market.

The station used to show up on the Baltimore rating list some time ago.

I got one of those fancy Tivoli table top radios for Christmas.  The sound was great, but after two days of spinning the knob trying to find a decent station I gave up and returned the radio for a refund.  Our choices in this area are dreck, at best.

Of course I just pop my MYFI unit in the car and it's XM only when I'm on the road....especially in the D.C. area.....but,in Baltimore a few weeks ago,I was out with a friend and found a really cool college station with plenty of reach around the beltway....I'm thinking Towson University's station....Elvis Costello,Robyn Hitchcock and a pretty good selection from what I remember....I wish we had something like that here with that kinda coverage....until then, satellite only.....

I'm seriously thinking of getting an HD radio. I realized it's come down in price a lot (it would cost me ~$200), no monthly fee, and I could get WTMD, bluegrass, 50s-60s oldies, another AAA station on WARW's second feed, much better quality than FM or sat...and lots of room for growth on unused .2 and .3 streams. (KEXP on WETA's .3? gotta dream).

Your wish is (partially) granted.

 The Globe (http://www.947theglobe.com)

They're playing a bunch of soundbites by Al Gore to show how "green" they are.

So far I've heard The Grateful Dead and Incubus.  Not much of an improvement.

No, it's not really anything like even a AAA station. You have to suffer through "Lightning Crashes", Steely Dan, Lenny Kravitz, etc. But I did hear the Psychadelic Furs this morning.

The environmental promos are really obnoxius, though, as are the spots where they claim to never rely on market research.
