Title: help - band I.D.
Post by: sacriforce on September 26, 2005, 03:52:00 pm
forgot the name of this mid 90s L.A. based rock band

one word name - something like "Vasoline" or "Valvoline"

4 piece band, reminded me alot of Stone Temple Pilots

 any ideas?

They did this one ballad that was sort of Neal Diamond-like, but the rest of their stuff was pretty much rock and roll

no it's not them

almost afraid the "v" name-thing might be a red herring.

Their videos got airplay and I believe their songs got onto at least HFS. I was in Toronto at the time so I saw a lot of them on Much Music, [pretty sure I saw something on Mtv too.

they had a rep for being hard partiers - like 4 Scott Weilands in one band, sorta. the singer had sleeves, red hair. tall and skinny. bordered on Mike Ness, style-wise.

They're from Chicago, although SACRIFORCE being wrong wouldn't suprise me.

Yeah, but they had a song called "Ticket to LA" as well as a Neil Diamond cover tune in Pulp Fiction.  Nash Kato was tall with reddish hair, and rumors were that the band preferred the H-train to the Ell.

I thought of them immediately (as I'm sure most people did from "STP-esque"), but they had 5 guys, not 4, and I thought they were from Detroit.

Sponge was one of the more underrated groups in the post-grunge boom of the mid-'90s. When they were on top of their game -- as on the hits "Plowed" and "Molly (Sixteen Candles)" -- their songs had a knack for jangly riffs and catchy, anthemic hard rock hooks, despite being wrapped in the fuzzy guitars and brooding seriousness of grunge. Sponge grew out of a Detroit-based hard rock act called Loudhouse, which released an album on Virgin in 1988 before getting dropped and breaking up. Drummer-turned-vocalist Vinnie Dombrowski (b. Mark Dombrowski) and guitarists Mike Cross and Joey Mazzola regrouped as Sponge in 1992, adding Mike's brother Tim Cross on bass, and Jimmy Paluzzi on drums. Adapting their '70s hard rock influences to fit the grunge zeitgeist, Sponge earned a major-label deal with Columbia, and released their debut album Rotting Pinata in late 1994. Critics compared them unfavorably to the Stone Temple Pilots, but alternative radio embraced the band's first two singles, the driving rocker "Plowed" and the jangly, introspective "Molly (Sixteen Candles)." A third single, "Rainin'," also earned airplay, and Rotting Pinata went gold; meanwhile, Sponge went on tour as Live's opening act. With new drummer Charlie Grover in tow, their 1996 follow-up album, Wax Ecstatic, was a more diverse affair, rediscovering some of the band's roots in arena rock, British glam, and jangle pop. But even though songs like "Wax Ecstatic (To Sell Angelina)," "I Am Anastasia," and "Have You Seen Mary" landed some radio airplay, Columbia was dissatisfied with the sales figures, and dropped Sponge once the album left the charts. Undaunted, Sponge signed a new deal with the Beyond label, which released the more classicist New Pop Sunday in 1999. It attracted little commercial attention, and more personnel shifts ensued. Tired of touring, the Cross brothers both left, and were replaced by guitarist Kurt Marschke and bassist Tim Krukowski; Billy Adams also came on board as the new drummer. After several years of recharging -- during which time Dombrowski played in several Detroit-area side projects -- Sponge returned in 2003 with For All the Drugs in the World, on the Idol label. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

yeah, the red hair/mike ness-looking part seemed to be more important than how many dudes were in the band or where they were from.

Well Sponge were from Detroit and I was going to bring them up after seeing the singers latest project in Detroit.  It would have been something like this

 A: Alt-Country

Q: What genre does the singer of a scrunge band with a minor hit try his hand at next?

Having running out of bandwagons to jump on Vinnie is the doing the Alt-Country routine with The Orbitsuns, which lose major style points for selling Trucker Hats with the bands catch phrase "Haul Ass" on them.

Thing is that while the stuff he is doing is passable, it's just not very credible.  He was in  Loudhouse, a 90's Jane's Addiction clone, in the 80's it was a Duran Duran clone, and before that Death Metal. He's basically the Detroit version of Scott Weiland...

Great band (Sponge) although I must admit I thought they were from Canada.
