Who rides roadies and mtn's (or both)
I'll start....I ride both but roadie definately takes preference.
Anyone interested in a board-ride one Sunday morning?
-
I'd love to go. Just need to set up my bike!
-
Well Bungle and I are going cycling one day this weekend. But it is going to be offroad and I really dont think you would be up to it.......
If my bike turns up before this weekend, perhaps Bungle will cycle Saturday and you Sunday.
-
Road (cannondale R800)
Mountain (specialized stumpjumper)
and daily commuter (slicks on the stumpy.)
-
Mountain.
I'd love to ride.
-
what about the board go kart race?

Ding ding DING!
I do not know if my bike will arrive tomorrow. If it does I would love for the old dog to teach me some of his tricks.

i ride a road bike
i'm training for some triathlons this summer...biking is my weakest sport
-
Who knew there were so many?
Me: Primarily mountain but road ride when the trails are too wet. Some commute/transportation biking too.
If any of the board (bored?) riders are into single speeds or fixed gears there's a new local ride list here (http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/MidAtlanticSS/).
And if you want to give a little love back to the trails, there's a trail maintenance day Sunday at Avalon. Details here (http://www.more-mtb.org/story.php?module=showevent&id=859).
-
I thought everyone on the board was a fat alcoholic drug addict.

I noticed a reference to Fair Hill on that message board. Have you been there?
I keep reading about that place having like hundreds of miles of singletrack and I'm curious if it's really as sweet as it sounds (but obviously not so curious that I'll drive all the way out to the Delaware border to find out).

No, but I know a few people who have. Reports are 50+ miles of trail, fast and fun, more smooth than technical.
-
I ride both - but have been primarily using the Mtn bike the last few years. We have a bunch of great rails-to-trails that you can just cruise on. You probably already know that you can ride from Pt State Park in downtown Pittsburgh the whole way into Georgetown (connection to the C&O in Cumberland)
Allegheny Trail Alliance (http://www.atatrail.org/yoktrek/2004trek.htm)
The coolest thing I ever did on a road bike was when I moved away from DC in '98 - I put everything in storage & shipped my Cannondale to San Diego. Then bought one of those B.O.B. 1-wheel trailers & some maps of the southern US. Then took off on my bike with a friend & rode to St Augustine Florida.
No doubt the coolest thing I've ever done. I'm now trying to work out a scenario where I can do it again - North maybe this time.
-
specialized rockhopper w/ slicks
I'd be up for a ride some weekend - road, not trail...
-
Check out the thread Hey Chimblysweep! for some gushing over fixies and singlespeeds.

Thanks, missed that.
A few thoughts after breezing through that thread:
- Do not even think about using a singlelator on a fixed gear. It will NOT work.
- The Specialized SS is a pathetic attempt to cash in on the SS wave without investing any real money. If you are buying a new pre-built SS it certainly should not have a tensioner. Complete bikes for a good deal are the Kona Unit and the Bianchi SASS.
- Thirsty: Make sure you've got horizontal or semi-horizontal dropouts for your fixed build or you will have to find the "magic gear" to run (pain in the ass). Or, you'll have to build a new wheel with the ultra-cool idea White Industries ENO eccentric hub (http://www.whiteind.com/eno.htm) - from the looks of the picture you probably have vertical drops.
Any questions on your build, let me know, I've got 4 bikes and they are all either single speed or fixed (or both).

Hey! I am not fat! ;)
-
And I DO NOT use drugs!
-
Gave up road long ago, too many insane drivers cutting me off.
Mountain biking is the way. Have the Patapsco state park trails 5 minutes from home.
Bikes:
Litespeed Obed (main)
Mongoose IBOC (spare and old)
Gunnar (going to be my single speed mtn bike)
Up for a ride if it is really trail riding.
-
Yo Ripley, check your PM's.

If I get my bike tonight and dont break it Saturday, does someone want to go out Sunday morning? I have a strong preference for off-road. I dont mind driving somewhere or even having to pick someone up.

You've got one back.
-
This board's a bit sketchy with that. Occasionally I get messages on the top of the board, most of the time I don't.
-
do you have a nice rack? (for your mini that is?)
and what kind of bike did you get, or has it been discussed in another thread and already slipped from my alcohol-ravaged mind....

No I dont have any rack at all.....
The back seats fold in the mini. I am guessing a bike will fit in easily enough, at least with a wheel or two off.
My bike looks something like this: <img src="http://i20.ebayimg.com/03/i/01/9c/82/4f_1_b.JPG" alt=" - " />
-
did you sell your litespeed? didn't you have one of those in scotland?
-
Markie...remember the factory rack from MINI requires drilling the roof. I have a mate who has an after market rack on his Cooper that doesn't require drilling so will find out the make to save you the hassle of researching it if you like.
I'm going out on Sunday morning, but not off-road. I'm going up Rte 28 in MD out to Point Of Rocks and back. It's a 50 miler, which will be about a 3 hour ride for my old self if anyone cares to join me....I'm the turtle, not the hare! :)
BTW....the darker side of bikers!

I had three bikes in Scotland. But they never made it over here.
Litespeed got sold.
Knackered Clockwork orange got given away.
Ultegra equipped Reynolds 653 Dynatech road bike is at my parents.
So I have not owned a bike properly for 5 years. But I have had great fun looking at Bungle's bum whilst following him. So the bike is a Salsa a la Carte with main tubes of Mankies favourite material, Reynolds 853. Its got just about a complete 9speed XT groupset.
-
No, I dont really like bike racks. Its like an advert to be robbed.
I am happy to fold the seats down. Thanks though.
Are you sure you wont go offroad?
I dont think I could keep up with you on knobbly tires, especially after cycling the day before.

I'm in the opposite situation to you. I just took knobbly tires of my mtn so I could ride pave paths more, so not set up for off-road. Besides, I have a century ride coming up soon so have to log some serious road miles or I'll never make it.
-
Its not miles you need, its time on the bike. Go on put the knoblies back on, it only takes a few minutes.
Are you doing the century in a group, if so you will be Ok. If you are doing it solo it might be a bit of a slog without any drafting.

I'm cycling with a Masser tech, but he's way, way out of my league...his average speed is 21mph and mine is about 16-17mph so I'll feel like I'd be holding him back, although he has been cycling for years and 15 years younger than me! It's a charity ride so there'll be tons of bikes, so I know I won't be the slowest, I'm guessing middle of the pack somewhere, which is fine with me.
-
16-17mph is really high for travelling alone. You will end up as the slowest of the real cyclists and much better than most casual bike riders.
Just try and get in a group of 5 to 10 riders whoe share the work at the front, then you will be in the low 20's without too much exertion.
-
I always thought the swimmers who would draft off of me in practice were fuckers.

I'll ride on Sunday morning, as long as we will be done before 1:00.

Can I let you know tonight? If I get my bike, you are on. I dont mind either place. I am more skillful than fit, though. I am a bit intimidated knowing you did the marathon last year.....

Just let me know.
Don't be intimidated -- I haven't been on the bike a lot in the last year, as I've been running more often.
-
That's hilarious.
