Anyone else going?
I won't ask the dreaded "Will it sellout?" question, but I will ask what time poeple suggest getting there, if the website says showtime is 9:30. I'm not terribly familiar with Iota.
-
I'd love to go but can't make it - some friends of mine say they are one of the best live bands around - they are planning on getting there around 8.30 - my experience w/ Iota has generally been for a popular band, any time after 9 can be risky
-
Are the Fleshtones really that much of a draw at this point in their career? No hype fro mthe Expresss, CP, or the Post Weekend Section. Might the Liars at Black Cat at least slightly draw from the same crowd? Still, it's a Friday night.
Nope, we won't be there.
-
I will, Skeeter! And I'll be up front for the band as I go to every show and the band would miss me if they couldn't see me (I tend to dance more than...most). And okay, maybe the band wouldn't miss me, but I have been chastised for not saying hi before.
As to the sellout, thing is it's a Friday, and sometimes Iota gets close to a sellout just because it's a Friday and enough folks simply dig the vibe. The band has had a good draw in the past on weekend nights, a little less so on weekdays.
When I really want to see a band at Iota, I make a dinner rez and eat there -- they come through around 9:00 and ask if you plan to stay for the show, get the cover and stamp your hand. Also allows you to sit through an opening band you may not be in to... You can make reservations up to 7:45 (but no later). I've got one for tonight.
As for showtime -- I have no idea. No opener is listed...?? If you make it, I'll be there whenever you show. We can squeeze you in to our table, I'm sure, if it's early...
-
PS, even on a Friday, unless the band is a big draw, I've never seen them sell out before 9:30, 10:00. [Now folks will add all their anecdotes of shows sold out by 7:00 -- I said if the band isn't a big draw in and of itself!] ;)
-
A dinner reservation at Iota would mean wasting your money and calories on crap food.
I'm a big booster of Iota, but I don't have anything good to say about their food.
-
Thanks, Bags. I don't really see me getting there early enough for even a 7:45 dinner reservation, but I'll make sure I'm there early enough to get in. I haven't seen The Fleshtones in about 10 years (at the 15 Minutes club - remember that place?). I'm really looking forward to it. See you there.
-
I once saw film actress Milla Jovavich do a set at the 15 Minute club. He music wasn't half bad. She sat right next to me at a table before her set. I do remember her almost getting into a scuffle with a female crowd member. Now that would have been entertaining.
Milla Jovovich is an ex-teen supermodel/actress who recorded an unexpectedly interesting debut album, The Divine Comedy, in 1994. Far from the trite dance-pop released by most models angling for a music career, Jovovich's debut is largely acoustic, rooted equally in philosophy and her Slavic background, and surprisingly thoughtful and well crafted. In 1998, Milla returned with Peopletree Sessions, a mail-order only release.

Don't get me started on the 15 Minutes club. To this day the best bar/club DC's ever seen. Simply fantastic; everyone could be happy there. One of the DC9 guys was a manager there, btw. Crow Bar as well, which had just a kicking jukebox and wonderfully mixed crowd of people.....aaah, the good old days of 15 Minutes, Crow Bar and smelly 9:30 Club on F street. If we'd had Black Cat as well, it would've been perfect.... ;)

Kosmo, I can't believe I'm missing a Fleshtones, Myracle Brah set, but I gotta check out Snow Patrol (which is also 10 minutes from my place). Have fun and report back! ;)

This is another of those weekends with too much going on.
Baltimore: Fri: Q and not U/Decahedron/Beauty Pill
Sat: Fleshtones
DC: Fri: Fleshtones
Sat: Beauty Pill/Decahedron/CityGoats
also Snow Patrol @ 9:30
I'd much rather see the 2 shows in Baltimore, but I'm too lazy to drive up there 2 nights in a row.
-
I'll be there around 8:30 to quaff a few Harpoon IPA'S. It will be very crowded, but not sure of a sellout. Get there around 9 or before just to make sure and stake out your spot up front. And yes, they are one of the best live shows around....always a "don't miss" when they come to town....
-

let us all take a moment and reflect on the passing the crow bar - one of the only places in DC where leather-clad bikers rubbed shoulders with K St lawya's and nobody gave a shit..

Are you serious?

She performs similar to Michael Stipe back in the good ol' days. There's a live video of her performing back in '94 on a site, I'll send to you when the link is working.
-
Yeah Brennser, I knew I liked you! (Beware, a certain board regular may now start referring to the crush I have on you....)
Were you around for the 15 Minute Club?

dammit, dammit, DAMMIT. The Fleshtones rock so well and have so much fun...I told a friend of mine during the show, "you know, I always remember they're great, but I forget just why when they're coming back through town, and this is it..." They rock so well, have a great time, have a whole ream of fun, scissor kick, walk on the bar, go in to the audience, jump, dance, have a great time. It's such a fun night, whether you know their music ahead of time or not.
Skeeter, great to see someone else having so much fun.
kosmo, tomorrow night you and komette will be having the most fun of the folks on the board. Go crazy and enjoy......

>>>> Don't have to tell me!! I was right up front.....I'm deaf, sweaty and had a rockin' good time as always.....putting the fun in the "SuperRock"......The Fleshtones never waver!!!
I need a one way ticket to "Hittsburgh"!!

I definitely won't let another 10 years go by before seeing them again. I had a helluva time. You had to really pay attention to what they were doing. Turn your back for 10-15 seconds and suddenly Peter's standing on the mixing board, the guitarist is on the bar, the crowd is singing into the mike they left on the floor...and they never let up for a second.
There's really no other way to describe it than just a great big rock 'n' roll party.
-
I don't remember them ever being like that back in the early to mid 80s. They just showed up, played, and hit the road again. Good but not great. Nothing that ever left much of an impression on me. I've seen them plenty of times yet can't remember even one show. In fact, they were kind of boring yet they played my kind of music. Did they just rippen with age or something?
-
Standard cool show from the tones. Same as when I saw them in '89, '93, '98, '00 etc. Too damned loud though. Glad I brought my earplugs.

But did you love it? I think the energy and fun they bring is infectuous......Peter Zaremba dancing in that surfy cocktail way, Ken and Keith with their fun choreographed kicks and circles....yum.

Kosmo, how was the Baltimore show with Myracle Brah?
