Title: Social D roll call
Post by: bearman🐻 on October 01, 2006, 01:47:00 am
Who's in? I saw them back in February in San Diego and it was one of the better shows I've seen them do, even though Mike Ness had his arm in a cast and had to surrender his guitar-playing. They played the entire Mommy's Little Monster LP in order from start to finish, then said at the end of it that they were "just getting warmed up". Seeing them in Southern California was excellent too of course...the audience was WAY into the show. Thatguy, looking forward to seeing ya there. Should hopefully be a very fun time.

I'll be there...I've seen them twice in the last 18 months (Allentown PA and 930 Club) and they were definitely two of the best shows I've seen, even as old as Mike is getting.  He's still got it as good or maybe better than he ever did I think.

My sister saw them in Chicago show last night and said it was one of the wildest shows she's been to. Apparently there were people getting kicked out left and right, and the band didn't even do an encore. Hopefully Baltimore will be a good show. Haven't been to Sonar in a while, but should be a fun time. And hopefully they'll play "Prison Bound" and something from the White Light White Heat White Trash LP.

well we didn't get quite as good of a set as chicago it seems.  i was a bit disapointed at the length of the set, but what they did play was very tight and very rockin

 Reach for the Sky
 Highway 101
 Under my Thumb
 Mommy's Little Monster
? (I missed this one, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't anything new)
 Sick Boy
 Gotta Know the Rules
 Ball and Chain
 Don't Drag me Down
 Bye Bye Baby
 Bakersfield (new)
 Nickles and Dimes
 ----------------
 Prison Bound
 Ring of Fire

The song you missed was Mass Hysteria...there was also a new instrumental song, I think it had "Mountain" in the title or something. That was the first tune they played. My sister got kicked in the head by a crowd-surfer...where we were standing, there was really no way anyone with a brain would pull that stuff. This guy was a moron. We were off to the left side, nowhere really near where the "pit" was. I just hate that nonsense...some girl got knocked down and her glasses broke too, so she couldn't see the rest of the show. I was ready to kill the guy...on top of it, he didn't get very far because there was a guy in a wheelchair right there and he fell on top of him too.

My little rant aside, I had a GREAT time. I would have loved a longer set, which I got in San Diego in February, but this was still a really tight and fun show. My sister said the performance was better than the last night of Chicago, and they switched things up a bit. I'm psyched that they played "Don't Drag Me Down". It was cool to see various 9:30 folks at the show, including Thatguy. Can't wait for Philly in a couple of weeks.

there's a lot of love in the forum this weekend.

i had a blast last night.  the only other song i would've asked for is "when she begins," but it was a great set.  i always wish they'd play a bit longer, but i guess it's better to leave the crowd wanting more than to bore them.  now i have to figure out how i'm going to get out of work for a philly show or two.  maybe norfolk...

in case seth is reading this:  the only question i got asked as much as "did that hurt?" last night was "why no show at 9:30?"  this was from the crowd, the band, and the crew.  while it's always nice to get out of the club for a show, i would work a social d show anytime.  double, triple, sold out, early, late.  whatever.

i really wish I could have seen them. I saw them once in fall of 2004. IT was an awesome show. My parents went with me to that one and we had a blast. the last time i saw them was at the 2005 hfstival.

i have to ask, how were lost city angels? i saw them open for tiger army last spring and they were pretty good.

ps- social d at the 930 club = awesomeness. so bring them back  :)

The Lost City Angels are a different band every time I see them.  I definitely don't remember them having a British singer last time.

I didn't dig Lost City Angels at all, and I've seen them a couple of times before this. For some reason last night I thought they were monotonous and any melodies they might have had just didn't come across to me except in maybe 1 or 2 songs. I'm looking forward to seeing the Supersuckers instead.

Can't go wrong with the Supersuckers. They sure know how to put on an entertaining show.

I'm thinking about skipping the Flogging Molly show just because there's so much other stuff going on the next few weeks...if I do, it will be the first FM show I've skipped in the area in which I've lived since I first saw them in 2000 opening for the Bouncing Souls in Virginia Beach.

EDIT: I forgot I skipped the show with Hot Water Music at the 930 Club because I couldn't get out of my driveway thanks to an ice storm (I lived in Fredericksburg then).  I DID have tickets for that though.

The show last night (Friday) in Philly was one of the better Social D shows I've seen. Of course, for me they are good, great, amazing, or stellar. So last night was in the amazing category. Here's the setlist:

 Road Zombie
 Reach For the Sky
 Highway 101
 Under My Thumb
 Mommy's Little Monster
 Mass Hysteria
 Sick Boy
 Gotta Know the Rules
 Ball and Chain
 Bye Bye Baby
Sometimes I Do (w/Eddie Spaghetti on vocals)
 King of Fools
 Nickles and Dimes
 ----------------
 Prison Bound
 Ring of Fire
 ----------------
 Story of My Life

First off, the Supersuckers are just a great band, especially as openers. "Pretty Fucked Up" is a hilarious song, but those guys have some chops too. So glad I got to see them again.

Social D were all business and the audience was into it, and they weren't as crazy as the Baltimore show. That being said, I'm always impressed by Philly crowds. The band were tight, Mike Ness apologized for having postponed the show for an entire YEAR, but they just ripped through the set. They did "Sometimes I Do" with Eddie Spaghetti from the Supersuckers doing vocals, which was a lot of fun. I wonder when they played that last since I've never seen it live. Ness needed the lyrics in front of him, which I thought was funny. 3 songs in a row from Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell...too bad "Cold Feelings" wasn't in there!

The nice thing was when the show was over people weren't really leaving...it was a fast show at 70 minutes, and the crowd just went insane. After about 5 minutes the band came back for a real encore and the place went apeshit. They closed with "Story Of My Life", which sent everyone onto South Street in a glow. Great night.

The Supersuckers can hold their own  alone in any bar in the world but I agree it's a great pairing with Social D. Sounds like it was a great night to be in Philly.Glad you enjoyed it. Gigs like that can restore one's faith in rock n roll in a few short hours. I thought it fitting after Social D's performance at HFS, Ness commented something along the lines of" If you like us here, you really need to come see us in a bar sometime". Definitely their favorite environment. They can really get the energy flowing.

They played Sometimes I Do at the Allentown gig the night before the HFStival in 2005.  Made the drive up there to the oversold Crocodile Rock totally worth it.
