i'm in the pit as well. i cant wait for broken social scene especially. EXCEPT unfortunately feist isnt going to be there - according to her website she's playing a solo show in ottawa tomorrow night. same with the girl from metric - theyre playing a show somewhere else. oh well.

ive never been in the pit at merriweather - do you have to get there early? or is it relatively easy to get a good position?

Unless you want to be right up front, there really isn't a need to get there early.

Was it just me or did Broken Social Scene start around 7:15? B&S started on time, however. I was surprised Ted Leo didn't play longer. Or did he start earlier than 6:30?

Anyway, I have to say that I'm not entirely sure I got my money's worth tonight. The Belle & Sebastian show at the 9:30 Club in early March of this year was much more satisfying overall. The Merriweather sound mix wasn't good, especially during Broken Social Scene (too much drums, not enough vocals). It's not often that I complain that concerts should be louder, but this one should have been. I strained to hear Stuart at times. When the audience started its rhythmic clapping it would almost down out Belle & Sebastian. At least, that's the way it sounded to me in the middle of the pit. Perhaps some center speakers for the pit would have helped.  Or maybe the Belle & Sebastian sound just doesn't translate well to large outdoor venues and they should stick to more intimate indoor venues instead. Also, I know it's really all about the music, but for $50 a ticket (including fees) couldn't they have added a decent light show? Good show, but just not a great one.

Post by: lukiedookie89 on July 09, 2006, 12:38:00 am
Agreed, it did not live up to their 9:30 shows in March...but it was still a great show.  I was really happy to hear so much material from Arab Strap.
Ted Leo was mediocre as always, but his new songs sounded good.  Broken Social Scene was amazing.
Title: Re: Belle & Sebastian Rollcall
Post by: Sieve-Fisted on July 09, 2006, 12:41:00 am
Ted Leo started at 6:30 and ended at 7:00.  Way too short!  I thought Broken Social Scene were just okay.  I had never seen Belle & Sebastian live before and I was very impressed.  We were in the middle of the pavilion, dead center and the sound was great.

Public Service Announcement â?? During a concert, please do not stand when everyone around you and in back of you are sitting...especially when youâ??re a bad dancer.  It makes it very difficult to see.  There is an unspoken rule, either everyone stands or everyone sits.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Ted Leo mediocre? I think not. I was underwhelmed by Broken Social Scene, but then I had issues with the sound mix and I'm really only barely familiar with their self-titled album from last year, so possibly it was just me.

This was probably the WORST Broken Social Scene show I've ever seen. Where were the horn section from the last tour??!! They were missing and so were "KC Accidental" and "It's All Gonna Break".

to elaborate on the actual show

ted leo - always cool, but always the same

bss - fucking cool, and talked to a few of them during b&s's set. nice dudes.

b&s - well, its just NOT my thing, at alllll.

crowd was very cool, and again, lawn people were let into the pavilion, per Belle and Sebastian, what nice Scots.  :)

i thought all three bands were great. after the energy of ted leo, i thought that broken social scene started out surprisingly slow. however, after like 3 songs, their set just took off and was unbelievable. but i agree, i was looking forward to "kc accidental" and "it's all gonna break." i didnt think the opening bands really fit b&s that well but it turned out to be a great show.

I thought Belle and Sebastian were great as ususal, and it was really good to here The Boy with the Arab Strab and Sleep the Clock Around. The sound was very good from where I was at in the pavillion (left center about a quarter of the way back).  Also really enjoyed If You're Feeling Sinister.

As for the other acts, I saw Ted Leo at Coachella, and was not impressed and was equally unimpressed last night. Just not my cup of tea.

I thought BSS were ok, but wish they had played more from "You Forgot It In People" which I much prefer over the latest CD. I agree that the volume for the vocals were not loud enough. The song with Amy Millan doing the main vocals was definitely the highlight for me. Too bad Feist and Emily Haines couldn't make it.

 Overall, still very good show.

Was in the Pit. Loved Ted.  Too short a set though.  Is he playing in Baltimore on 8/2?

Walked around the lawn during BSS. Not my cup of whatever.  Nice to see people out with their infants on the lawn.  Beer and cigarette in one hand, baby in the other.  Chatted with a 930ish person who confirmed the Who and the Killers will be at vfest.

Belle and Sebastian were good, not as good as the 930 show.  Vocals mixed too low, or was it that because they all use those in-ear monitors, there is less sound coming at you when standing so close to the stage?

Maybe its not new, but it seemed new to me - there is a somewhat hudden starbucks at MPP.

I agree that the B&S shows at 9:30 were better than last night's.  I thought their set was a little uneven at times, but still enjoyable.

Post by: kosmo vinyl on July 09, 2006, 10:24:00 am
Agree with everything said about B&S, the show at the club were better.  The band was more cohesive and more connected with the audience that night.  They didn't really catch until about an hour into the set. Nice collection of the songs towards the end, but would have liked to have heard Legal Man. The string quartet didn't really add anything and the sound was a bit lacking in the pit a bit better farther back into the pavilion.

Not sure if it was intentional or not, but Ted Leo did his soundcheck after the gates opened which sort of sounded like a pre-set warmup including a closing cover of "Suspect Device".  Will have to check him out for a full set soon...

As far as BSS somethings are best left unsaid...

they played great songs. it would've been nicer at 930 but then i wouldn't have had that great breeze.

KC was on the setlist for Broken Social Scene and they didn't play it.  I could have cried.  They translated much better live than I thought they would, seeing as their sound on disc is so dense.  I thought Ibi was a little lacking but Anthem for a Seventeen Year Old Girl was phenomenal.  Parts of that set blew me away.  I'd like to see them somewhere smaller with a better mix because the vocals were missing a lot.

I think I was just spoiled by seeing Belle and Sebastian at 9:30.  Last night felt too big and they definitely didn't connect with the audience as much.  Arab Stap material made me so happy though.  It seemed like their set was pretty short, but that was probably just me.

Ted Leo's new stuff sounded good, they were on, better than when I saw them in March.

What I though was hilarious was during the anti-boss tirade the kid who got the air time calling out the principal of Georgetown Day.  That has to be indicative of a shift in fan base for B&S.

I am also guessing that they were filming for something since they had the house lights on for most of the set (which is what killed the light show IMHO).

I thought Ted Leo was great but his set was way too short.

Broken Social Scene had their moments but, all in all, I found them pretty dull.  Apparently "collective" is the new euphemism for "jam band."  Not that there's anything wrong with jam bands.

Belle and Sebastian were enjoyable.  I think I was just expecting more after hearing all the superlatives about their live show.

Just got back from LA where I got to see the Shins and Belle & Sebastian at the Hollywood Bowl. Aside from being one of the very best concerts I've ever seen, I also have to add a few things:

 1) Sound at the Hollywood Bowl is top notch
 2) How cool to be able to order bottles of wine and enjoy the superb weather while the Shins were playing
 3) Belle and Sebastian put on the best show I've ever seen them do
 4) The audience was one of the best I've ever seen and my hats go off to them.

Even for a sold out show, the people were reverent, respectful, and for the first half of Belle and Sebastian they treated the show for what it was: an actual performance of musicians. They didn't really even need the LA Philharmonic, but it made a huge impact on some of the songs and just elevated them even more. But by the last half hour or so, the audience got so into the show that they were running down from the nosebleed seats, getting up and dancing, even at one point storming the stage and dancing up a storm. Hopefully they did a good job at Merriweather (sounds like they did), but there's no way in hell you could top the Hollywood Bowl show. What an amazing night.

 Here's the rough setlist:

 Fuck This Shit
 I Fought in a War
 Le Pastie de la Bourgeoisie
 The Model
 Sukie in the Graveyard
 If She Wants Me
 I'm Waking Up To Us
Don't Leave the Light On Baby
 Jonathan David
 Lord Anthony
 If You're Feeling Sinister
 Your Cover's Blown
 Dear Catastrophe Waitress
 The Wrong Girl
 I'm a Cuckoo
 Dirty Dream #2
If You Find Yourself Caught In Love
 Sleep the Clock Around
 ---------------------------
 The State I am In
The Boy With the Arab Strap

March was my first B&S live experience and last night's show didn't hold a candle to it.  Have to agree with whoever said it wasn't loud enough and they seemed very disconnected.  They just seemed uncomfortable in a bigger venue like MPP.

The drunken Brit yelling "softlad!!" didn't make the evening any more enjoyable either.

i had really high hopes for this show, these 3 groups are among my favorites, and it was a pretty disappointing night (musically, i still had a great time there) ... caught the end of ted leo, who was great (but only 30 min set? need to go at least 45 there)

ggw is totally right, broken social scene sounded like a run-o'-the-mill jam band with little to no intensity ... the first time i saw them at black cat, they blew the fucking roof off the place with how determined they all were (ask rhett, he'll confirm) ... a perfect example of the difference is "anthems for a 17yr old girl":  at BC, the female lead was writhing on the floor by the end of the song, just yelling the chorus over and over ... here she just looked vaguely disinterested ... seeing them in broad daylight in central park last summer was even better than this set

belle & sebastian just never got a head of steam, it seemed like their set was pleasant enough, but they didn't really connect with the audience until near the end ("arab strap" is a great closer) ... but they just didn't fill up the amphitheatre with their sound, they're not built for a big place like that, and their last show at 930 was just infinitely better

speaking of which, merriweather was maybe 1/3 - 1/2 full (that's being generous) ... absolutely nobody on either side of the pavilion and the lawn was pretty sparse ... the sound from the center-front of the lawn was pretty weak, it never got very loud, and BSS was all drums and bass (for a meandering low-key jammed-out set, not a good mix at all) ... but one of my friends was in the pit for BSS and he liked their set, so maybe it was just a matter of perspective

but that's just nitpicking the music, it was a beautiful night and it was fun sitting out on the lawn for a few hours and drinking beers

 2) How cool to be able to order bottles of wine and enjoy the superb weather while the Shins were playing

 Fuck This Shit
 I Fought in a War
 Le Pastie de la Bourgeoisie
 The Model
 Sukie in the Graveyard
 If She Wants Me
 I'm Waking Up To Us
Don't Leave the Light On Baby

They didn't play dear catastrophe waitress did they?  Did I totally space out during that song?  Cause I love that song.  And where was electronic renaissance.  That was the highlight for me from their 930 club show.  Maybe doesn't work as well outdoors, though.

b&s setlist

 jonathan david

the boy with the arab strap

i thought they were fantastic...it was clear they seemed a little less comfortable at such a big venue and with all the drunk frat-boy action but i  really doubt belle and sebastian could ever put on a less than great show. highlights for me were sleep the clock around and of course, boy with the arab strap. I also really liked broken social scene, first time I've seen them live so I don't have much to compare them to, but I look forward to seeing them headline a show sometime. unimpressed by ted leo...I enjoy his albums but he tends to bore me live, and I was relieved that he only played 30 minutes.

I'm not surprised the BSS were somewhat out of sorts for this show. I've been in Ottawa to catch the BluesFest here and BSS did a headlining set on Friday night, before going to DC for the B&S show. They did indeed leave alot of people behind since they were also in Jason Collett's and Feist's band (who played the BluesFest on Sat night).

Wish I had seen the show at Merriweather but it's a heck of a festival here. So many bands that it's hard to decide who to see. Calexico were on at the same time as BSS. Kevin Drew did an impromptu rant about firing the guy who did the scheduling and then got the whole crowd to start chanting for Calexico.

Yeah, who do you think they are anyway, Kasabian (http://www.nme.com/festivals/news/23554)?

mr. murdoch didn't seem to like it much either;

So last nights show was not so enjoyable. I thought it was going to be a great one. I actually had leisure to take time shaving, pick something to wear, and then walk to the amphitheatre along a lakeside, looking out for terrapins on the way. Sometimes, though, as Robert Burns pointed out, oneâ??s plans and predictions go to the dogs. I donâ??t know what happened; maybe had too much fun at the other shows.

Two journalists, one after the other asked me, after the show in LA,

â??Youâ??ve played the Hollywood Bowl. Where do you go from here?â?
â??Downâ?, I said, both times, like it was funny the first time.

What is Tupac, who died in 1996, doing next to a Mercedes that could be no older than the 2001 model year?

well, 2pac is incapable of doing anything wrong, and an ancillary benefit of that super-power is the ability to conjure up cars that haven't yet been designed or built

Ugh, I should visit this place more often... I always miss the topics when they're still relevant.

I also went to the show and actually enjoyed it. I was there to see Broken Social Scene, but thought Ted Leo was good--although I got a bit bored at one point and actually admit to being more enthralled by his sound check, but maybe that's because there was nothing else to do--and thoroughly enjoyed Belle & Sebastian, despite not being much of a fan. I have to admit that it wasn't really an "on" night for BSS; I hadn't seen them before, but it was still obvious, especially compared to videos from other shows they've done. I really don't think BSS is meant to be an opening band--they played for roughly an hour, which I've said is only warm-up time in BSS terms. I think they managed to fit in a good set list though, although I was disappointed that they didn't do one of the normal closers (It's All Gonna Break or KC Accidental) and that they chose to do Superconnected slow. But Kevin Drew was cute, especially with his Roller Coaster Ride comment, and I was overjoyed to see Amy Millan, who is my favourite artist. (Emily was with Metric at Wakefest and Feist played Bluesfest that day, as did Collett. I doubt they went through much trouble trying to get a large line-up, considering they were opening.) They're supposed to tour again in November before going on hiatus and I look forward to seeing them in a club venue where the audience is actually there to see them.

I kept track of the set, which went:
    1. Fuzz (Late Nineties Rock/Shampoo Suicide)
    2. All The Gods
    3. 7/4 (Shoreline)
    4. Fire Eye'd Boy
    5. Cause = Time
    6. Stars and Sons
    7. HandJobs for the Holidays
    8. Superconnected (slow)
    9. Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl
   10. Almost Crimes
   11. Ibi Dreams of Pavement (A Better Day)

(I'm not positive about All The Gods; I swear I heard him singing the line, but it could have been part of the ending of Fuzz. Does anyone know?)

Kevin sounded really good on Ibi, which was a relief after seeing the Juno performance. Anthems and Crimes were the real highlights for me... Stars and Sons would have been, but there wasn't the audience participation.

I was right near the "you're #1" guy as well.  He and around 7 others marched into that area of the pit a little while into the set and disturbed everyone's placements.  Goodtimes.

hey Eddie,

actually no, the house lights went off almost completely...there was just a slight glow coming off of them, but the stage lighting was so well done it was hard to take your eyes off the stage. I can't get over that place...I'll have to make it a point to go back there again soon. It's a pretty amazing place to see a concert.
