Changes At Sonar

Sonar on East Saratoga Street is in the middle of some pretty big changes.

Previous owner Lonnie Fisher left the warehouse club last June to become a project manager for a real estate developer.

Dan McIntosh, who opened the Talking Head Club, took over Sonar.

Things stayed pretty much the same until recently, when McIntosh parted ways with Steez Promo, one of the club's key promoters.

McIntosh said he wants to take matters into his own hands.

"I basically decided that I think I can do it better," McIntosh said.

Last week, I spoke with Seth Hurwitz, who co-owns the 9:30 Club and I.M.P., a promotions agency that has booked shows at Sonar for years. Hurwitz sounded a little uncertain about his future with Sonar.

"I'm not sure where we're lined up there," he said. "Right now, we're doing shows at Sonar."

That wasn't a portajohn, it was the Talking Head Club.     ;)

Sonar's the absolute worst, so it's got to be all improvement from here on out. There's nowhere to go but up.

Yeah, I hope the changes that are coming are coming to the main stage.  I've always enjoyed shows on the club stage.

My experience seeing the bravery there was good. I've always wanted to go back but never really had a reason to.

I received an email from "Steez Promo" yesterday with upcoming shows.  Looks like they are booking at 8x10, Ottobar and Fletchers now, and from the looks of it they are not really the shows I'm into... a lot of local crap like Afreudian Slip, Pasadena and Jah Works (probably the three worst bands in the Baltimore area IMO) and a few other shows that may interest others on this board, but not so much me (Lupe Fiasco, MSTRKRFT, Brother Ali, The Whigs).

I like the bands booked at Talking Head much better than those mentioned above, so I'm excited to see what comes of this.

I went to see +/- at the Talking head a few Winters ago.  There were 8 people there.  EIGHT PEOPLE!  The beer tasted like vinegar, which I thought was odd.  The whole place was just really strange.

Except that it's pretty small for a 5 piece band to play on and actually be able to move around.

This club has gone to shit since Lonnie got out of it. The quality and professionalism of the place is a total 180 from where Lonnie had it.

Sonar has this pretty cool punky feel(I'm thinking it was only at the clubstage) that I dont get at places like 930 when I go there. But I've been there only twice. I think it has the coolest location too. Directly under a bridge in a deserted street ghetto 5 blocks away from the harbor in Baltimore. But if you have to take a shit I wouldnt recommend it at sonar. And the place can actually manage festivals quite well.
