man, i sure hope the padres break out their 1984 jersey's in your heart too. :)
ooooh, i would like to see padres v. a's, but then that would put me in an existential crisis that i don't know how to cope with.
-
I got the Twins and Dodgers in the Series, Twins taking it.
-
i've got the Yankees over the Dodgers.
which is why i said in my previous post, who cares.

If they wear the 84 jersey's even once in the playoffs, I will pull my support for Skip Leyland and Andy Van Slyke, and root for the Pads.
As for an A's-Padre's series - even as your friend, I don't know that I'm ready for that.
-
I want the Yankees vs. the Dodgers in the World Series, with the Yanks coming out on top. I still haven't gotten over the '81 series.
-
Somebody please help me with this question. I've searched every web site and can't figure out who the Red Sox are playing in the first round. If anyone knows who they play and when their first game is, I would be most appreciative.
Thanks in advance.

What the hell was Torii Hunter thinking with two outs?
-
looks like the a's might actually advance. wait, 2-0 lead means nothing with them, i forgot...
anyway, everyone needs to come to terms with the fact that there is NO CHANCE the yankees don't win the world series. they will do it quite easily. they are trotting out perhaps the best offense ever right now. damon, jeter, abreu, sheffield, giambi, a-rod, matsui, posada, cano -- their #9 hitter hit .342! two shoo-in HOFers in jeter and a-rod, two borderline HOFers in abreu and sheffield, four perennial all-stars and then cano, who may well become a perennial all-star. it's disgusting. just accept it now and you won't be as upset when it happens.

time for the Twins to "cowboy up!"
:)

What about Abreu would make him a borderline hall of famer?
And if Jeter didn't play on the Yankees, would anybody pay him any attention? If he were on Tampa Bay, he'd be Carl Crwaford.

the fact is, they have had a lineup ALMOST this good for the last 5 years and havent won patooty.
every year that they dont win the world series, it should be to them and their fans, as not even making the playoffs is to any other team (yes, the Red Sox included).

that would be confusing to have a Carl Crawford and a Carl Crwaford both on the same team.
more confusing then when Millar and Mueller were both on the Sox!!!

Rooting for the Yankees is like going to a casino to root for the dealer.

if the stathead revolution continues, i can see abreu getting some serious HOF consideration when all is said and done. he's the kind of player who should age gracefully, so he should still have at least 5 or 6 more solid seasons left in him, which should give him 300 hr/300 sb, maybe around 2,500 hits, .300/.400/.500 career line. if he stays with the yankees past next year that will help his counting stats and he might get a ring or two. he's never been the best player in the league, which will hurt him, but he's been in the top 10 a lot.
and jeter's obviously overrated, but i think it's gotten to the point where everyone says he's overrated and after a season like this one, maybe he's underrated.

August 2005 Mailbag:
Al did play-by-play for the greatest sporting event of all time (the 1980 Olympic Hockey game); the greatest gambling moment of all time (the Music City Miracle, when Wycheck lateraled to Dyson to beat the Bills); and the most incredible sports moment of all time (when the first-ever Bay Area World Series was postponed for a week by a devastating earthquake that happened moments before Game 3 in San Fran, the odds of which had to be 10 billion to 1 if you added up all the different variables). I always thought that was amazing. If Michaels had just found a way to announce Hagler-Hearns, the Artest Melee and the Shawn Michaels-Bret Hart "Screw Job" match in Montreal, he would have gone down as the Forrest Gump of announcers.
But of course he was wrong on one of them, and forgot that he did do the Hagler-Hearns fight! August 2005 More Cowbell:
I made two significant screwups in the Al Michaels section of yesterday's mailbag...
"As a diehard Bills fan and the Throwback being the most frustrating moment of my sports life, the Titans/Bills playoff game was definitely called by the ESPN guys, not Al Michaels."
"Al passed up on that Music City Miracle game to broadcast the Miami vs. Jacksonville game (where Marino was down like 63-0 before he realized the game actually started)....Boomer admitted that he wanted to do that game, but Michaels wanted to broadcast the Miami game instead because it was probably Marino's last playoff game and the call was up to Al (he really blew that one)."
Yes, I screwed up. But here's the crazy thing -- somehow I forgot this, and mainly because ESPN Classic never, ever, ever shows this fight, but guess who did the call for Hagler-Hearns? That's right, Al Michaels! I totally blanked on that one.

to borrow a line from the sports guy ... the lesson, as always -- i'm an idiot.
-
Ugh, my belove-ed Yankees down in 4 games. I may actually have to root for the Mets for the remainder of season, but only because Willie Randolph is their manager. It's the closest to the Yanks I'm going to get at this point.
-
It's always a good day when the Yankees get eliminated (especially like that) and all of their overpriced, overrated superstars have to spend the rest of October crying in their millions of dollars.
-
i just dont see how the yankees could have lost
its like Team Canada losing in Olympic Hockey
i cant be happier they did, but its just weird,
-
I hate it when people are happy when the Yankees lose. Be happy for the Tigers/whoever was playing them. That guy pitched phenomenally. Making people like Sheffield and Jeter dive out and swing for the pitches that were clearly balls from our perspective but obviously impossible to read from theirs takes talent. Throwing something like six pitches outside of the strike zone in the first however many innings? Unbelievable. They were the better team last night.
My whole family are huge Yankee fans, and I think that we actually went into a little bit of shock. It was kind of ridiculous.
-
I don' know anything about baseball, but from what I saw on tv, a few innings, is there a problem with attitude in the Yankees? they seemed like they were thinking more about vacation than the finals, extremely un-motivated. Even the coach didn't seem to worried when they were down 8-1.
-

Sorry, but it appears by that statement that you did not have to suffer through the late 90's with Yankee fans. They were the least gracious winners, therefore I will have no sympathy for them as losers.
The Steinbrenner era has so dramtically changed baseball, that I now get an extra happy feeling that they make all the off-season moves and deadline deals and still get bounced in the first round.
-
should really be the Steinbrenner/John Henry era
or maybe after the upcoming offseason, the Steinbrenner/Henry/Moreno era
but yes, much joy should be taken in the Yankees losing when trying to buy championships

Oh I don't know. As a lifelong, devoted Yankee fan (and the ones I know) we've been pretty gracious about any successes (and BTW, losses--there have been some oozies and we have heard about it, trust me!) We know the deal. Big Market-Big $-Big Team. I've basically learned to celebrate silently when they've won. Perhaps you've bumped into some fickle Yankee fans that only like them when they win.
All that being said, Steinny certainly hasn't helped their PR over the years. But Joe Torre and team are a crew to be admired. As for the Steinbrenner/Martin/Jackson era of the '70s? Well, that's a totally different story.
-
I have two points to make.
1. I am not sure why Torre and crew are "to be admired". Admired for what exactly? First of all, only like 4 of those 90's Yankees are even on the team now. and for as good as they all are individually, they should be winning World Series' not just the damn division. I dont see why i should admire the all-star Yankees losing to the Tigers, Angels, Red Sox, Marlins, D-backs.
2. I want to take the time, but perhaps someone else has to diagram where the Red Sox and Yankees have gotten each of their players and where they went after their stay on each team. I am assuming we have had a LOT more players come through the Sox system than the Yanks (i know of a few) and a lot of the ones who didnt, we got through smart trading. Who did the Yanks trade for Mussina? Johnson? Giambi? sheffield? Damon? Cano? Matsui? i dont think anyone, and even A-Rod and Abreu were basically complete rip-offs due to another team wanting out of a salary. The red sox dont do this nearly as often. And how many players can you think of that were great on the Yankees and then went to another team? I can think of any (kenny lofton doesnt count). but the sox dont have 3/4 of their champ. team from 2 years ago! Certainly if they were "buying" championships they wouldn't lose guys to free agency.
compare salaries with the Yankees and mets and angels and red sox all you want, but paying guys a lot and hording all stars are two very different things and the Yankees stand alone there.
-

Perhaps "admired" wasn't the proper word. I was just commenting on his personal style of coaching and contrasting it to the Yankees of the '70s and say, Billy Martin who was understandly a lightening rod to both Yankee fans and non-fans.
-
Torre pulled the Yankees out of their absolutely terrible mid eighties-early nineties period. He did a lot to rebuild the organization and reestablish a "dynasty" if you will. I agree that we should have been winning multiple world series in the past six years with our lineup, and he hasn't done much in that department, but he did serve a purpose.

but wouldnt you agree that purpose may be served and maybe its time to move on.
I dont think anyone's saying that Torre's a bad coach, but what the Yankees are doing now isnt working, so its time to make some changes.
Personally, as a sox fan, i'd like them to keep Torre and A-Rod and everyone else and keep NOT winning the World Series. This may be a turning point for the Yankees. or maybe the rest of the world is catching up!
-
Nirvana and Pearl Jam pulled us out of the mid eighties- 90ish hair metal era as well. But their time has come and gone.

never even won 90 games as a manager anywhere else. or the divison i dont think.
good point!
-
MLB.com is reporting that Torre is staying as manager.
Look for him to retire later on. It's likely a face saving move.
-
Torre Games/Winning Percentage as manager
Atlanta 486/.529
NewYorkMets 709/.405
NewYorkYankees 1780/.607
St.Louis 706/.498
he won the division in 1982 with the braves, thats it other than with the yankees

St. Louis named most dangerous U.S. city
By CHRISTOPHER LEONARD, Associated Press Writer
Mon Oct 30, 9:53 AM ET
ST. LOUIS - A surge in violence made St. Louis the most dangerous city in the country, leading a trend of violent crimes rising much faster in the Midwest than in the rest of nation, according to an annual list.
The city has long fared poorly in the rankings of the safest and most dangerous American cities compiled by Morgan Quitno Press. Violent crime surged nearly 20 percent in St. Louis from 2004 to last year, when the rate of such crimes rose most dramatically in the Midwest, according to FBI figures released in June.
"It's just sad the way this city is," resident Sam Dawson said. "On the news you hear killings, someone's been shot."
The ranking, being released Monday, came as the city was still celebrating Friday's World Series victory at the new Busch Stadium. St. Louis has been spending millions of dollars on urban renewal even as the crime rate climbs.
Mayor Francis Slay did not return calls to his office seeking comment Sunday.
Scott Morgan, president of Morgan Quitno Press, a private research and publishing company specializing in state and city reference books, said he was not surprised to see St. Louis top the list, since it has been among the 10 most dangerous cities for years.
The study looks at crime only within St. Louis city limits, with a population of about 330,000, Morgan said. It doesn't take into account the suburbs in St. Louis County, which has roughly 980,000 residents.
Visiting St. Louis on Thursday, FBI director Robert Mueller said it was too early to tell why some types of crime were rising faster in the Midwest.
Mueller said the FBI is working harder to form partnerships with police departments to launch programs like St. Louis' Safe Streets task force, which focuses police efforts on problematic neighborhoods.
The safest city in 2005 was Brick, N.J., with a population about 78,000, followed by Amherst, N.Y., and Mission Viejo, Calif. The second most dangerous city was Detroit, followed by Flint, Mich., and Compton, Calif.
The bad news for St. Louis was good for Camden, N.J., which in 2005 was named the most dangerous city for the second year in a row.
Camden Mayor Gwendolyn Faison said Sunday she was thrilled to learn that her city no longer topped the most-dangerous list.
"You made my day!" said Faison, who has served since 2000. "There's a new hope and a new spirit."
Cities are ranked based on more than just their crime rate, Morgan said. Individual crimes such as rape or burglary are measured separately, compared to national averages and then compiled to give a city its ranking. Crimes are weighted based on their level of danger.
The national FBI figures released in June showed the murder rate in St. Louis jumped 16 percent from 2004 to 2005, compared with 4.8 percent nationally. The overall violent crime rate increased nearly 20 percent, compared with 2.5 percent nationally.
While crime increased in all regions last year, the 5.7 percent rise in the 12 Midwestern states was at least three times higher than any other region, according to the FBI.

Associated Press writer Rebecca Santana in Trenton, N.J., contributed to this report.

Matthews: .313 avg. with 19 homers, 79 RBI, 102 runs, 44 doubles, and had a .371 on-base percentage last season. 10 SBs and a Gold Glove.
Drew: .283 avg. with 20 HRs, 100 RBI, 84 Runs, 34, doubles and had a .393 OBP. Only 2 SB and no gold glove.
One of them just opted out a $10 Million deal to seek more money - the other one just signed for $10 Million. Which would you rather have?

Cards in pursuit of Kennedy
Nov 28 - The Cardinals are the front-runners in the three-team race for free-agent second baseman Adam Kennedy that includes the Padres and Blue Jays, the Toronto Star reports.
Kennedy reportedly has a three-year offer on the table from St. Louis worth about $5 million per season.

The Pirates signed two players to minor-league contracts, right-handed starter Ronald Belisario and outfielder Jonel Pacheco. Belisario, 24, was on the Florida Marlins' 40-man roster two years ago but has not pitched since then because of injury. He had a 22-23 record in the minors. Pacheco, 24, batted .264 with 10 home runs in Class A last season.

Kennedy returns to Cardinals with three-year dealBy Jerry Crasnick
ESPN.com
Free agent second baseman Adam Kennedy has reached agreement on a three-year, $10 million deal with the St. Louis Cardinals. The team is expected to announce the contract Tuesday afternoon.
Kennedy was St. Louis' first-round pick and the 20th choice overall in the June 1997 draft. The Cardinals traded him to the Angels with pitcher Kent Bottenfield in 2000 in a deal for outfielder Jim Edmonds.
Agent Paul Cohen said Kennedy turned down more money from two other clubs that had an interest. The Toronto Blue Jays are believed to be one of those teams.
"Adam's going to the World Series champs, to one of the two or three best baseball cities in America, to a place where he's been and he knows well,'' Cohen said. "On a 1-10 happiness scale, he's like a 12 right now.''
Kennedy is a .280 hitter over eight big-league seasons with the Cardinals and Angels.

Orioles work to add Bradford, Williamson to bullpen
By Buster Olney
ESPN The Magazine
The Baltimore Orioles, aggressively making over their bullpen this offseason, are expected to sign right-hander Scott Williamson -- the fourth veteran the team has targeted for its middle relief this offseason.
Williamson will receive a one-year deal worth $900,000, plus incentives.
The Orioles have already signed left-hander Jamie Walker and right-hander Danys Baez, and have an agreement in place with right-hander Chad Bradford.
The Baltimore Sun, citing a source, reported that Bradford, who pitched for the Mets last season, was close to accepting a three-year contract from the Orioles.
And now sources say the Orioles will sign Williamson, 30, who has pitched in 328 games in his career, with 55 saves and a 3.32 ERA.
Baltimore entered the offseason eager to rework a bullpen that was 19-25 with a 5.25 ERA and 35 saves in 56 opportunities this year.
Buster Olney is a senior writer at ESPN The Magazine. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I am fine with the Cardinals not joining the spending spree (their payroll is pretty high anyway) but at some point it would be nice to sign at least one quality free agent rather than the bargain bin selections
they could have signed Gruzielanek to a cheap deal last year and would be better than Kennedy at 2b and be paying less probably
although working with the bargain bin seems to be working for them better than spending big bucks is working for other teams
(actually Kennedy is making less than he did last year, and Wells is just a 1 year deal, not too bad all things considered)

Yanks win Igawa rights with $26M bidESPN.com news services
NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees got a chance to sign a Japanese pitcher on their second try this offseason, winning the rights Tuesday to Kei Igawa after losing out to the Boston Red Sox two weeks ago for Daisuke Matsuzaka.
Igawa
New York's offer of $26,000,194 -- the last three digits matching his strikeout total this year -- was the highest bid among major league teams for Igawa, and it was accepted Tuesday by his Japanese team, the Hanshin Tigers.
"The Yankees are a team with a lot of tradition," Igawa said at a news conference in Osaka. "They get a lot of media attention, like the Tigers do. I was surprised to hear the team bid that much for me, and I feel like today I've taken another step toward realizing my dream."
The Yankees' winning bid was first reported by ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
A 27-year-old left-hander, Igawa could compete for a spot at the back of New York's rotation next season behind Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Mussina and Randy Johnson. Carl Pavano, coming off 1½ seasons of injuries, also would be in the rotation if healthy, and the Yankees have expressed possible interest in signing free agents Ted Lilly or Gil Meche.
New York has until midnight at the end of Dec. 28 to work out a contract with Igawa's agent, Arn Tellem -- who also represents Yankees left fielder Hideki Matsui.
"Throughout the years, I have enjoyed an excellent working relationship with the Yankees and look forward to completing successful negotiations on behalf of Igawa," Tellem said in a statement. "It will be an honor for me to help put him in pinstripes for the 2007 season."
"We have been following Kei Igawa's very successful and accomplished career in Japan, and we are excited about the opportunity to begin the negotiating process with him," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said in a statement.
The Yankees pay Hanshin only if they reach an agreement with Igawa.
"I am very pleased to have the rights to sign him for the Yankees," owner George Steinbrenner said in a statement issued by spokesman Howard Rubenstein.
Igawa went 14-9 last season with a 2.97 ERA. He tied for the Central League lead in strikeouts -- he won strikeout titles in 2002 and 2004.
Igawa faced a touring team of MLB stars this past month, which included Mets stars Jose Reyes and David Wright. Igawa, who faced the MLB stars after a month layoff, gave up a home run to Wright and walked six batters in Japan's 7-2 loss.
Reyes was impressed with Igawa.
"He has good stuff," Reyes told Newsday. "He throws hard and has a good changeup."
Wright, however, gave Igawa mixed reviews.
"I just don't know," Wright told Newsday. "I'd have to see him when he's in midseason form. You send a guy up there after a month layoff and you can't get a handle on a guy. But as far as a lefty goes, he has a sneaky fastball. I thought he threw, for a lefty, an average to above-average fastball, an above-average changeup, and his slider was a little flat. But with a month off, who knows? Could be any number of reasons."
Igawa, the Central League's 2003 MVP, has an 86-60 record with a 3.15 ERA. He would have to play in Japan for three more seasons before he could become a free agent.
Boston bid $51.1 million earlier this month to win the right to negotiate with Seibu Lions' Matsuzaka, the MVP of the World Baseball Classic and a possible No. 1 starter.
The Yankees bid between $32 million and $33 million for Matsuzaka. The Red Sox have until midnight at the end of Dec. 14 to agree to a deal with Matsuzaka and his agent, Scott Boras.
"I'm looking forward to having a pitching duel with Matsuzaka," Igawa said. "I know the fans there have very high expectations and I'll do my best to live up to them."
After the bidding on Igawa closed Monday, the Tigers were informed of the amount of the high bid, but not which team made it. The Mets bid between $15 million and $16 million for Igawa, a baseball official said on condition of anonymity because the amounts of losing bids are not disclosed.
Also this month, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays won the rights to Japanese infielder Akinori Iwamura of the Yakult Swallows with a bid of about $4.5 million.
