Medications tonight at The Black Cat. It's a shame Channels cancelled. I got the new cd yesterday. So far I like it a lot. Any thoughts on Victory At Sea or Mass Movement of the Moth?
Possibly The Dance Party/Middle Distance Runner at Velvet tomorrow.
I have to work a little Sunday and Monday. Not pleased about that.

Would like to see the Medications but I was just at the Black Cat last night at the BYOP concert and I'm afraid they may start charging me rent over there. In retrospect I should've saved my time/energy for the Medications--I'm sure a much better use of my time. They're a great band.
Although I am on the fence for the Stooges film at the BC on Sunday.

dinner w/ neighbors tonight

I prefer White Oak Canyon and after all the rain I'd say the waterfalls will be in good shape
Why is it best that you do the programming on your own? Do you like to program naked or something? :D
-
Friday night - United Way softball game (if it's not rained out, like every other game we've had in the past few weeks, including our make-up games)
Saturday - College homecoming, and preparing for Halloween
Sunday - Yardwork and planning for the wife's b-day
I also rock pretty hard.
-
Yeah, I was leaning toward White Oak Canyon even before the rain. Hopefull the leaves have started to change in abundance.
Nah, the programming stuff is too specific to the project I'm working on for anyone to come in and be expected to help out, even if they were proficient in SAS. One woman in my office who is familiar with the project could probably do it for me in about a third of the time it will take me, but I guess that wouldn't help me in terms of learning how to do it myself.

Today - nursing my dog, who had surgery yesterday and is in a miserable mood.
Saturday - go look at houses.
Sunday - Army Ten Miler. Considering I hurt my back right after Christmas last year and didn't run at all in 2006 until three weeks ago and have only run twice since then, I'm predicting an absolutely miserable time. It will be good to get out and race, but I pray I don't get passed by any of the guys with artificial legs. That would be really demoralizing.
Monday - sit around and groan about my sore muscles. Hopefully I'll rally and make it to the Dead Meadow show.

If you do the Rag in the A.M., I may see you. I've got the official go-ahead from the wife to do a mountain run and that one is by far my favorite. Thing is, I've got to do the whole thing and be home by noon, so will have to leave by 6:30 to pull that off.
-
Fri - Ray's The Classics for dinner (the continued descent in gluttony), late night hockey on DirecTV
Sat - make beef stock, yardwork, and Middle Distance Runner at the Velvet Lounge
Sun - Dim Sum brunch, hockey on DirecTV
yup...food, music, and hockey. That's pretty much all I do.

Isn't Juana Molina at IOTA on Sunday...she's quite good.
-
I don't know, but I just got orchestra seats for Brian Wilson @ the Warner so I'm happy about that!
-
Going to Philly tomorrow to see The Secret Machines play an "in the round" show.
-
I've been meaning to catch Middle Distance Runner for a while now, so I might try to hit the Velvet Lounge tomorrow. Any idea when the various bands will be performing at the Velvet Lounge, Kosmo?
-
e.joseph is suppose to be on between 9 and 9:30pm... and IMHO is worth getting there early for. I think the rest of the order will be Pawns, TDP, and MDR ending the show. Know the VL reputation things will run late... But, I would get there earlish as it will be packed seeing as MDR has soldout Iota on past weekend gigs there.
-
I work both Friday & Saturday graveyard shift every week. I'll be cocooning mostly.
BTW, Sorry to hear about your lame dog ggw. How old is he?
-
She's pretty good (though I think I read on here and in the Post that her live show at Black Cat opening for Jose Gonnzales was a little underwhelming). But no match for the entertaining showmanship and witty wordplay of Robbie Fulks.
I think we may also go see the Science of Sleep. Anybody have any thoughts on that one>

i saw it last weekend. it certainly has its flaws, but that's sort of what makes it work. it's very gondry, with lots of subconscious workings of the brain stuff, weird visuals, bright colors, music video style editing and all that. likeable characters, well-paced, solid B, maybe B+. nah, we'll stick with B.

He's two. He's fine really; he just has a bunch of sutures on his side and walks around whimpering because he's a giant spoiled baby.

I think I was once passed by an artificial leg guy. I know I was passed by the guy in wing tips.
Do you leave your dog home alone during the workday? We've got future dog plans, but that's one of our obvious concerns.

He gets walked in the afternoon while we're at work. Dog walkers might be a little expensive for your tastes, Rhett. It's $15 for 20 minutes.

That was my career for 3 years until a few months ago when I went back to the professional world. My wife and I started a dog-walking business on Cap Hill. It's a great business to be in (low start-up costs and expenses, exercise, be your own boss), and a LOT more lucrative than I would've expected.
The one irony of dog-walking, however, is that most people who do it gain weight rather than lose it.
-
It's the treats, isn't it? I swear, we bought our dog training treats that smell just like a BBQ Beef sandwich.
I'm almost tempted to give it a taste when my wife's not looking...

Perhaps she could pair it with her desire to be a fitness instructor.

The reason is that you spend all day walking, often somewhat slowly, but enough so that the last thing you want to do at night is exercise. It's very wearying, walking 5-6 miles a day in a stop-and-go fashion, but it's not particularly aerobic.

you need a sibling in the area who works from home
I am actually dog sitting right now for my brother while he and his wife are on the east coast, he has 3 dogs, 2 very big ones. He normally stops by on his lunch break to let them out when he is working.
-
How about morning and evening jogs/walks and a fenced backyard to rome around during the day? Would that not cut it?

they can last the day without getting out if necessary, and he always takes them on walks/jogs morning and evening, they dont just leave them out normally though, i think because they bark too much then, they do come and go to the fenced back yard as they please when somebody is home
they did have somebody break in recently though, and the burglar quickly left when a Newfoundland and a English Mastiff came at him

I've got new plans for tomorrow:
October 06, 2006, 6:00 PM ET
Tower Records To Be Liquidated
By Ed Christman, N.Y.
Tower Records, the music industry's most famous retail brand, will be liquidated beginning tomorrow (Oct. 7).
After a 30-hour auction, the process was won by the lead-bidder, Great American, who put together a consortium of other suitors who were bidding on different components of the retailer. The winning bid was $134.3 million.
â??It's a sad day for the music business and I feel badly for all Tower employees," says Jim Urie, president of Universal Music Group Distribution. "Tower was probably the greatest brand that will ever exist in music retail.â?
In court Michael Bloom, a partner with Philadelphia law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, the law firm that represents the secured trace creditors committee, questioned if the winning bid was the best one. Bloom pointed out that one of Trans World's partners, Hilco Merchant Resources, LLC., upped its bid by $500,000â??after the auction closedâ??thus matching Great American's bid. Bloom claimed the Trans World bid was more beneficial for the 2700 Tower employees and all the trade creditors.
But U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Brendan L. Shannon ruled in favor of the Great American bid, noting it was important to vindicate the Chapter 11 auction process.
There is a chance Tower Records could live on via Tower.com. Norton LLC, part of the Great American consortium, put up $3.8 million to acquire Tower.com and Pulse Magazine.
Out-of-business sales at Tower's stores will begin tomorrow.

new weekend same topic...
Tonight it's me, a pair of fingerless gloves, and a stack of CDs to play for the people hanging out at 932 at the James Blunt Concert.
Sunday it's definitely TVOTR for me, and probably a movie and brunch with Kosmette.
Anyone else in the mood to share?
-
Tonite it's more Canuckophilia with Matt Mays at Iota. Tomorrow is hockey. Sunday is a picnic with a foodie list I'm on.
Food, hockey, music...that is my life.
-
Tonight: picking up our pooch from being spayed and cooking Chicken Paupiettes for...
Saturday: My wife's birthday dinner party (tres adult!), which means I'll be cooking and cleaning all day long.
Sunday: Cleaning up from said party, and probably just laying low. Possibly TVOTR if it doesn't sell out (and if I can stay awake that long).
-
Tonight: DJing Super Diamond
Saturday: DJing Cowboy Mouth
Sunday: Meeting xacnuck at picnic
Monday: DJing Five for Fighting
-
Seeing The Departed at some point.
I *really* want to see TV on the Radio but Monday is going to be an intense day at work, and I just don't think a late show is a smart idea. We'll see. I've listened to Cookie Mountain more than a hundred times since getting it, and I just love it.

Lots of shows this weekend:
Tonight - Islands
Tomorrow - Gypsy Eyes Records Farm Party (probably)
Sunday - Jenny Lewis and TV on the Radio
-
We may go to a labradoodle romp.
Anybody have or know anybody who has a labradoodle?

I played with one at the dog park the other night. Pretty nice dog. Of course, I can't say the name without giggling to myself a little.

My wife (and I, previously) walks several of them. In fact, she's probably with Mulligan right now, who has a standing 11:00.
Great dogs, but kind of high maintenance.

Gypsy Eyes Farm Party on Saturday; camping down there and coming back on Sunday.

Oh, so you can camp there? That's one thing I wanted to find out before I decided if I was definitely going or not. It's gonna be damn cold at night...
-
High maintenance in terms of their hair, or in other ways?
You might be a good person to ask...
We eventually would like a dog on the larger side (but not huge), who would be good with kids, and would be able to withstand us being at work all day...though he would have a fenced yard with a doghouse to rome, and we could do a morning and evening jog/walk. My wife would be at home when he is a puppy, but probably back at work when he is an adult. I do have allergies, but not necessarily a deciding factor. I guess the separation anxiety is the biggest concern. Any thought on what bigger dogs don't mind being alone so much?

Yeah, you can camp down there; I think the whole scene is going to be a blast. Just bring a bunch of blankets and you'll be golden.

All of the labradoodles I know are hyper, bursting with energy, and prone to tearing houses/apartments apart because of the separation anxiety. They're also some awkward, as if they don't know what to do with their size, so they're constantly crashing into everything. And it might be a coincidence, but it seems like the labradoodles we walk tend to have weird health issues frequently.
As for what I'd recommend, they're kind of like the Honda of dogs, but almost all of the golden retrievers I know are fairly mellow, self-sufficient and trainable. If I were going to get a dog, I'd get a 3 or 4 year old golden (labradors are similar), preferably from someone you know or who is recommended to you (so you know it hasn't been abused -- a dog with serious issues can truly shit up your life, especially if you have or will have kids). I'd also get a female, as they're usually less aggressive and territorial.
If you're really intent on getting a puppy, realize that puppies are WORK. I will never, ever get a pup because they tend to be so needy and hyper.
-
Thanks for sharing. I think we're still a couple of years away from getting a dog, but your info is very helpful.

how about same question, except small dog?
-
We have a couple of labradoodles in our 'hood. They are definitely high-energy but also exceedingly friendly and playful. I think most labs and lab mixes are high-energy. Plus, they act like puppies until they are like three or four.
We had Golden Retrievers when I was growing up. They were awesome dogs -- on the mellow side and great with kids and other dogs. But the Goldens I see around today don't look like the ones I remember as a kid. I think that, like Labs, they have suffered from their own popularity and perhaps a little inbreeding.
We have a St. Bernard and are probably going to get a second one. Great disposition and deceptively intelligent. Kids love him and he loves kids. Some other dogs are not always sure how to take him, simply because he is so big, but after the connection is made, he gets on great with other dogs. He's totally mellow and quickly adjusted to our work schedule. However, he sheds like nobody's business and drools, and not everybody is cut out to have a dog that weighs more than most people.

Newfoundlands are a lot like St. Bernards (size and temperament) and my brother and his wife got one for their personality, but somehow they ended up with one that takes great pleasure in using his size to scare other dogs, he would never harm them, but you can tell he enjoys his image. He can normally scare em off while still lying on the floor without raising his head. Scared the hell out of me the first time I saw him walking towards me.

Not sure how small you're thinking, but for a smallish to mid-sized dog, I'd get a border collie. They tend to be very intelligent, loving and well-mannered. They can be a little manic occasionally when they try to herd you along, but I really like these dogs a lot.

much quieter weekend this weekend but the one music -related thing is kinda cool
parents of a kid in my daughters kindergarten class are having a house concert featuring Jon Dee Graham (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_dee_graham)
I'm looking forward to seeing him in such unusual surroundings and his new album is quite good
-
newfs are great! i grew up with one! he lived to 13 which is way old for newfs.
they are very protective of their families and great with kids. their sheer size intimidates most people though they are very very gentle. heck, the neighorbhood cat beat up on our newf.
very loyal dogs though tough to train and they can be seriously obstinate. you need to brush them every day and they need to be walked a few times a day as well, and not just around the block.
they are VERY strong dogs. our newf pulled a cast iron bolt out of the side of the house where his run was. my dad finally had to drill into the cement with a new cast iron bolt and then cement in around it, and that one he was never able to pull out.
they are suspectible to hip displayia and arthritis. if your house has a lot of stairs, don't get a newf. its just not fair to them. and if you don't have a/c, don't get a newf either. they can't take the heat. even in coastal massachusetts, our newf liked to hang in the cellar where it was always below 65 degrees during the summer days.
great dogs. just great. but not for everyone. they can be aloof, but not as bad at bernese mountains dogs. and they can be droolers, ours wasn't.

Boy am I glad to have gone to Little Steven's website because I completely forgot about the Romantics playing this Sunday at the Black Cat... Guess I better buy a ticket online so as not to flake out at the last minute.
-
Same topic yet another weekend of fun ahead...
For me it's Sunday night at the Black Cat for Shadows of the Knight and The Romantics. Am excited to finally see the Romantics play were they belong in a hot sweaty club. They also have a kick ass near drummer, Brad Elvis of The Elvis Brothers, Big Hello and The Handcuffs. Can't wait... They are giving tickets away free at Mousetrap for the show as well.

While not music related, it's Flugtag this weekend in B'more. (you know, where Redbull gets everyone all crazed on their drink before a bunch of people stupidly try to "fly" into the disgustingness that is the water at the inner harbor)
Myself, I'm headed to Blobs Park for Oktoberfest and some cheesy German dancing.

After a rough week of busting a thumb and losing a family member, Smackette and I had a very lovely drive up Calfornia's Route 1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_State_Route_1) from The OC to San Francisco over 4 days with notable stops in Cambria/Paso Robles and Monterrey to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary.
You'll have a tough time convincing me there's a prettier drive (http://pc-hwy.com/pchwy/) in the world.

having driven highway 1, the only other road i've been on that can compete (and maybe exceed???) is the great ocean road. (http://www.greatoceanrd.org.au/)

Have either of you been on the Amalfi Coast Highway?

Amalfi coast is a beautiful, if occasionally terrifying drive....I'm a little biased but I also think the Ring of Kerry is one of the worlds beautiful drives

I go to the Birchmere for the scenic drive.

Ring of Kerry was nice, but also terrifying. The weather was also a bit of a downer the two times I've driven the Ring of Kerry.
I've never driven the Amalfi Coast Highway, although the wife and did put that on our list for a future anniversary.
As for the Great Ocean Road (and Amalfi, I'd guess), the big difference for me is the complete changes of scenery from the constant ocean views. With the ocean nearly always on one side of you, you can go from the California Redwoods further north, to the Golden Gate Bridge, the boardwalk of Santa Cruz, the mountains of Big Sur, lighthouses, sand dunes and grass plains in the central coast, to urban sprawl in the south with some of the best surf spots along the entire route. It's more than just spectacular ocaen views along a 550 mile strip. But I admit to being biased about the pacific.
