Title: Smash em up
Post by: kosmo vinyl on July 20, 2005, 03:15:00 pm
What else is any self respecting Britpop fan going to do  when this happens...

From the Guardian via Torr's Blog

Nick Hornby: What have you been listening to the past couple of years?

Bruce Springsteen: I listen to all kinds of things, you know? Take your choice. [He reaches into a bag and pulls out a whole heap of home-made CDs.] I've made all this music for walking ... A lot of this is a little acoustic-oriented but I hear everything. I hear all the Britpop stuff, the Stone Roses and Oasis, and I go on to Suede and Pulp. I'm generally interested in almost everything.

I maintain that Springsteen's early records are fantastic.

Greetings from Asbury Park would be on my list of the 100 Best Albums Ever.

Agreed.  It's a strange thing to have to defend the Springsteen's work.  He's the Boss, for god's sake!

Has there been any decent music out of Britain SINCE the Stone Roses? You gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away, know when to run.

Touché...

But a few bad songs/record covers shouldn't outshine his best work, which was stellar.

Why? Though he is enjoyable, Ted Leo's not exactly someone of musical importance. Unless you live in an indie rock vacuum.

Springsteen also once said his favorite current band was Old 97's. Thus, his taste must be impeccable.

Preach it, brother.

Admittedly, much of Springsteen's eighties output is really, really bad (with the notable exception of Nebraska) and his nineties stuff is pretty mediocre (in my opinion).  But those records from the seventies are outstanding.  Brilliant lyrics.

i don't a reason to argue the boss's importance in the mainstream. sounds like the indie rock vacuum is where he is lacking cred

Indie Rock Vacuum would be a good name for a band, or for this board.

hardly. i'd say there's a wide range of music appreciated on here, and there's more hatred here for the indie rock establishment like pitchfork than there is love.

liking good music is very different from an "indie rock vacuum"

The comparisons of John Darnielle to Springsteen are ubiquitous these days.  And we can't overlook the Dismemberment Plan name-checking 'Nebraska' in 'Ellen and Ben.'
