Title: BTS/CvB Roll Call
Post by: xcanuck on October 09, 2006, 11:02:00 am
I can't believe NOONE is going to see these guys tonite. We'll be there. I've enjoyed all the Built to Spill shows I've ever seen. No reason to believe tonite should be an exception.

I'm going tonight. I don't know why I've been so lax about this show. I love BTS, and I absolutely loved CVB 20 years ago, so this should've been one I had circled on the calendar. Oh well, it's not supposed to sell out so figure to just show up.

i'll definitely be there tonight. it'll be my first time seeing them after being a fan for 12 years. hopefully they'll play 'velvet waltz'

I was just wondering to myself earlier how in the hell Jenny Lewis sold out when the likes of Built to Spill and Camper Van Beethoven apparently haven't even come close.  That's messed up.  I suppose it's because there's two shows, and few people are going to both.  I'll definitely be there tonight, and possibly tomorrow night.  I've never seen either band (though I have seen Lowery live with Cracker), so I can't wait.

Just discovered Built to Spill last week on Last.fm with "Going against your mind". Seems like an excellent band. If I were in Washington, I would go to this show.

Or it could be that they've both been around for so long that many people have already seen them, as opposed to Jenny Lewis being relatively new and it will be the first opportunity for many to see her.

But I bet the total of two shows will outsell the one Jenny Lewis show.

Good lord, what an amazing show.  And everyone came out of the woodwork, apparently.  It had to be close to selling out, the place was so packed.  I'm seriously considering going to the second show.

Also, slight correction.  I have seen Built to Spill before, at Bumbershoot 2004 in Seattle.  It was after that show that I started listening to them.  Pretty bad when you start forgetting what bands you've seen...  But seeing them at a place like the 9:30 was a hell of a lot different than a huge outdoor stadium with thousands of people.

Jenny Lewis has much nicer tatas than David Lowry or Doug Martsch.

But damn, they both put on a fine show last night. I had to leave probably midway through the BtS set in order to catch the metro, which was a shame. And the club filled in quite nicely after all. Good to see.

CvB was awesome...BTS was great too, but I also had to leave at about 11:45 to catch the Metro.  How did the setlist end up?

It's weird. I love Built to Spill, love the records, love Doug's voice and playing, and love the songs. Plus, I really appreciate bands that are no-frills, that stretch out songs, and are strong players. That said, BTS always leaves a me a little underwhelmed. I don't know why and I can't quite understand it, but I thought the show was only okay and that's been my opinion in each of the 3-4 times I've seen BTS.

I was pleased to see such a turn-out. I hope they draw that many tonight, because I still like the band a lot.

"Conventional Wisdom", "Made-up Dreams", and especially "Untrustable" were AMAZING live. I left during "Carry the Zero" since I figured the encore was going to be "Broken Chairs" from looking at their other setlists. GREAT show! Too bad I live in Baltimore 'cause i would go see them again tonight, but make sure to get there late. CVB were terrible

It's so funny how subjective music is.  I've seen BTS close to twenty times and last night's show was the best yet.  I loved CVB as well, killer doublebill.  Can't wait for round two tonight.

i'd normally be going to one of these shows, but i had to manage the secret shine show last night -- which was fantastic -- and i have to work tonight. i'm not too bummed, though, as i've seen BTS about 65 or 6 times, and CvB twice.

Night one was definately superior than night two. The setlist and crowd were better.

Also, what the hell is Doug's problem with those shitty picture filled DVDS?  Nobody gives a shit about seeing cats.

I do.  I thought the cats were fucking awesome, though I've seen the one collection of clips before.  Camper's videos were rather amusing, too.  I could NOT stop watching that damn little guy dancing.  And the racoon-like animals (whatever they were) with the laser eyes, those were badass.   :)

Though I do agree that last night was better.

I missed Helevetia both nights, how were they?

I thought it was a decent show overall, though I left before the end...anyone have a setlist? I was excited to hear "Don't Try", which I thought was blazing. Great sound too.

The nastiest thing happened to me when I was walking over to U Street. I was minding my own business, when all of a sudden I felt like I had stepped over a small dog...of course, it wasn't a small dog, it was a giant rat trying to scurry to safety that somehow ended up running into my feet. I am surprised at my lack of vocal reaction, but I haven't had an experience like that since being leaving the old club through the rear entrance back in 1993. Friggin' disgusting.

Great show I thought...Better than previous BtS shows I've seen. Good to hear "Sidewalk", "Twin Falls", and "Big Dipper".

Very good show.  Helvetia didn't do much for me but both CVB and BtS were great.  I could have done without the 20 minute set-closing jam, for my ears' sake.  5 minutes is good, by 10 your ears are beginning to hurt and you are ready to move on.  By 15, it's an endurance challenge and a game of chicken to see who blinks first.  You know it's gone on too long when the drummer starts packing up his kit before the rest of the guys are done.

The videos (BtS) were part entertaining, part disturbing, and part just a distraction.  He seemed much more interested in them than the music or the crowd.  The last 30 minutes felt like you were being force fed someone's vacation slides.  "No wait, check out THIS video of my cat.  He's so cute."

Goin' Against Your Mind and Conventional Wisdom may both make my top 5 songs of the year.

6.7 Zs

Would it kill them to play two songs consecutively without stopping for a two minute tuning/play with dvds/wipe sweat off our brow break?

Definitely one of the more obnoxious crowds I've experienced lately, but that's not the band's fault.

What made the crowd obnoxious?

The crowd was great the first night.  Even the number of smokers seemed to be down, I definitely didn't smell as bad as I normally do when I leave the club.

I got to the show near the end of CvB's set and hung near the back, where the tapers go.  These two girls start clucking like nobody's business.  No big deal; it happens.  So I move up near the food window.  Three minutes later, they're right behind me.  Before BTS, I move to the opposite side of the floor.  As could be guessed, about three songs in, the more heinous of the two Chatty Cathies appears right in front of me.  This time she's escorting her boyfriend, who is lambasted and trying to get another drink.  She's all smiles as she steps on both of my feet.

After that, some douchebag in pleated chinos and a shiny blue button down shirt decides that he needs to stand right in front of me, but also needs to keep reaching over me to get to his Red Bull and Vodka cooling on the bar inbetween sips.  Of course, he, like Rhett, only uses credit cards.   So every 20 minutes he pushes by to go to the other bar to get another RB & V.  One time he comes back to find somebody standing in his spot.  He tries to order the dude to go stand somewhere else, but that fails.  so then he spends 15 minutes bitching loudly to his friends about how the guy took his spot.  then he spends another 15 minutes trying to get buddy-buddy with the spot-stealer.

After that ends, I discover I have been flanked by another mousey and mouthy chick who not only gabs incessantly, but also gesticulates with the grace of an epileptic.  She also fucks with strangers in front of us by tapping on their shoulders or kicking them in the leg and then looking away like she wasn't the one that did it.

Next time, I'll try and leave my asshat magnet at home.

Wow, that sucks. The chicks just can't stay away from you, Romeo. Maybe they thought you'd give them a free t-shirt if they flashed up.
I noticed more baseball hats than usual, and the crowd was pretty frat, but I was happy to not encounter a lot of meatheads muscling around. Of course I was also in the balcony for this one.

Sucks.  You should have been up front where all we had to deal with was Tree (7 foot tall man who stands stoic and motionless in the face of music).

I saw that too. The 20 minute jam session was pointless and stupid. You couldve played a few more songs in all that wasted time. Doug clearly was more interested in the photo slides during and the lame jam session. I started laughing my ass off when Scott Plouf started packing up his drums before the damn thing ended.
