Title: REM @ Patriot Center
Post by: eros on June 24, 2003, 05:44:00 pm
For those who are interested...they've moved their 10/6 show from MCI to the lovely GMU Patriot Center.

Sounds like they are having some trouble moving tickets time around.

Damn, that sucks. But then again, that's probably one of the smaller venues REM will play on this tour.

Any word on when tix go on sale?  The last album was just awful, but I understand they've been rehearsing a lot of old stuff, so it should be a good show.

Its about time some old bands realize that people like thier OLD songs.  Beasties, RHCP, Pearl Jam should all take note.  People may go thier shows again  :)

The fanclub pre-sale started today. The public sale begins this Saturday (6/28) at 10 am via TicketMaster.

From the interviews I've read, they are dusting off a lot of old pre-"Green" songs for this tour.

"Warner Bros will release In Time: The Best of R.E.M: 1988-2003 this October 27th internationally and October 28th in the United States. As previously reported, the best of collection will include two new tracks, "Bad Day," slated to be the first single, and "Animal," which R.E.M. debuted along with "Bad Day" in Holland and London. Tim Hope, director of videos by Coldplay and the One Giant Leap project among others, recently shot a video for "Bad Day" in Vancouver just prior to the beginning of R.E.M.'s current tour.

Please stay tuned for more details about In Time."

From my friend Ian,who recntly saw them in England:                                                                                                        saw REM tonight.

 they were awesome.

a good portion of 'Life's Rich Pagent', a little 'Document'...
 'Boxcars'!!!
'Fall On Me' was wonderful (one of my fave middle-eights in rock).
'People Have The Power' into 'Its The End Of The World...' was cool.

new songs were a little 'whatever' (especially the one which was just
 the
music from 'Its The End Of The World..' but with different words. i
 mean..
 it was EXACTLY the same).

nice to see so great an REM show after so long.

i really want to go to this show, esp if they are making a sincere effort to kick up the notch with the old stuff. the albums from the 1993 and on, until this last one, were shit but they've got 15 years of earlier stuff. i love reckoning. that's my favorite album.

'course i probably can't go considering the flippin' patriot center is SO not public transportation friendly.

 bugger!

That's my problem as well. But I figure I have about 3 months to find a solution.  :D  May have to investigate those Zip/Flex Car things.

Actually, the fan club presale was a couple months ago.  This presale is just the general public presale through their website.  You don't have to be in the fan club to participate, but you do have to register. If you want to go to this show, you should see what's left in the pre-sale.

They've been playing tons of old stuff from every record.  Hell, one night they played something like 4 songs off of Fables.  Rumor has it they're sounding great.

 I'll definitely be there.

That's really funny seeing as Hi-Fi and Up are two of their best albums, and far better than anything during their so-called prime.

Advertise in the City Paper "Friends" section saying you're looking for a friend who has a car, and likes to go to shows.

btw, you can request songs for each particular show.  http://www.remhq.com/html/tour/requests.html (http://www.remhq.com/html/tour/requests.html)

was looking at the tour, and noticed that other places in the us get wilco or sparklehorse as the opening act. . .patriot center gets pete yawn.

also, is anyone else having tremendous server difficulty today?  70% of the time that i try to get to a web page (including my yahoo mail page) i get an error message. our IT people say that at&t is having domain service name issues in the northeast.

It's fine here but I'm using a cable modem. May make a difference.

Yeah, it looks like they'll be playing a bunch of older stuff since the tour is kinda for the greatest hits cd. I got tickets in February or so through the fan club, the fan club is great that way   :D

REM still have enough fans to justify a fan club? Or is it just you and the treasurer, your mate?

Says who?  Just my opinion here.... and remember I am one who actually likes albums like Pablo Honey, Zooropa, etc.... but I really enjoyed the albums New Adventures and Reveal.  I believe those albums are great on their own.  Different than their mid-eighties material, but good.  I disagree with another post in suggesting a band play their original stuff, for I can't think of anything less appealing.  You stick to the old formula, you turn into Aerosmith.... and that is as gawd awful as it gets.

As an FYI, no tickets left via the website pre-sale.

Question -- is the show general admission?  And what are ticket prices like??

$50, but i don't know if its general admission. and it better not sell out until sunday night when i will be near a phone/computer/mobile so i can call ticketwanker and order my tickets. i hope its general admission though that would be great!

isnt Patriot Center always general admission I think it would to police any other way.... too many entrances onto the floor.

I've asked the Patriot Center and it is NOT general admission, it is a reserved seating event.  Actually, most shows there are not GA.  But the price appears to remain $50 without a scale based on seat location.  ??

For a map of the Patriot Center seating for an End Stage show, see

I've only been to one show there where it wasn't gen. admission.  I love being able to go onto the main floor if it's not crazy.  That being said, you can get some great views just off the main floor too.

Hi-Fi is an amazing album.  REM may be the only band in the world who makes better albums when they put more songs on them (14 over the usual dozen).

But reveal is just sooooo duuuuuuullll.   It's like the new YLT.  We're happy, so let's write some boring songs.  You could call it Richard Ashcroft syndrome: have a kid and you music goes down the drain, but I never really liked the verve.  See also Badly Drawn Boy.

I agree with Reveal...but on Summer Sun most of the lyrics are sad and depressing if if you listen to them. It's really more of a Winter Cloud album.

And Hi-Fi is great, yes. It took me a while to get into but now it's one of my favorite REM albums.

Well I am sure when I went to see Beck there or maybe oasis, probably both, it was a reserved seating event. I rember having a seat number and everything. But you could just walk onto the main floor.

It is a seated event, I already got tickets through the fan club and we were assigned seats. There is a seating chart on the Patriot Center's website.

Was also at the 2nd Brixton Academy gig.  I was going to post the setlist, but see that it's already been done  :p
It was an awesome show!  They played a lot of stuff from the older albums.  I hear they not only are varying the setlists quite a bit between shows, but also the set itself.  I was hoping to hear Driver 8, but they played it on Tues night (grrr!  I knew I should have gone both nights); the Venue was cool too (reminded me a bit of a larger 9:30 club).  If I were back in the country, I'd soo catch them at the Patriot Center (though both it and the MCI center have horrible acoustics!)

Hmmm .... reserved seating that sucks. I saw Depeche Mode and Beck there both general admission.

Actually I like the place for a gym.

Saw REM at Merriweather last time around - OK live but wouldn't pay to see them again and it looks like the playlist from the UK show has at least six songs they played last time around.

anyone get seats? did you get good seats? i couldn't get online again until now so ticketmaster offered up some crap seats at this late juncture. i think i'll wait until closer to the show and see if someone sells there on here or on ebay.
