back to back in June... doesn't get much better than that.
-
not having wilco would make it much better.
-
whatever you say... they're an amazing band.

I agree

I can understand why some people might think Wilco was just average, or boring, or overrated.
But what I don't understand is why some people so actively dislike them. I mean, their music is not so "out there" that it could cause repulsion, nor is it so "mainstream" that it could cause indie types to be repulsed.
What gives? What is it that makes some people hate Wilco so much? Their commercial success?

I kid...can't disparage folks digging them, maybe the fervor with which they do so, but... ;)
balls, I don't hate Wilco -- I think it's the aformentioned fervor of fans that cause non-fans to get more vehement. Every time I mention I'm not a fan, I get back, "You need to listen to [insert fave wilco album title here]" It can drive me crazy....can't I just not be a fan?
-
No. You should really check out Being There.

Everyone knows Summer Teeth is the best mix of their alt-country roots and the experimentation they've playing with now.
Plus, check out God Ween Satan.

I think Uncle Tupelo's Anodyne is the best Jeff Tweedy related album.
I think for me, no Wilco album quite is "brilliant". I would only give that tag to 10-15 or so albums by anyone, ever. But they are all consistently very good.
-
Summer Teeth is probably my least favorite, the only thing worse would probably be an album full of songs like Kamera.
-
Really? I always thought that AM was considered to be their crappy one.
-
You Fucked Up is a confidence boosting break up song. I think everyone should have that at the ready.

No, that's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Though it's way better than crappy.

Wilco has a great sound and a lot of great tunes but they tend to get mired in melancholia. I tried to watch their performance on Austin City Limits but couldn't hang with it, too gloomy
-
Finally, hasn't it been like 3 years since Ween came around, or did I just miss them at some point?
-
i remember when i had front row seats at "dar" to see wilco being opened up by sonic youth, last year. sonic youth rocked the place and i was the only one standing up; having a hell of a good time. everyone else just sat there like a folk implosion video waiting to happen, thinking "who does this sonic tooth band think they are?" then when wilco comes out, the place goes lazy crazy. i sit through three or four songs and realize that this band's sound is rock lite; sort of a r.e.m. meets pearl jam meets brooks and dunn. i left my front row seat behind after song five. but back to the almighty boognish known as WEEN. the place to see them this summer (other that 9:30, of cource)will definetly be bonaroo at the "late night tent". lord only knows what they'll pull out there.
-
I don't know --- this Ween/Wilco thing just doesn't work for me:
<img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002HFE.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" alt=" - " />
<img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002MWY.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" alt=" - " />
-
Hopefully they'll pull you away from here, never to return.

I didn't go to the DAR show, but a friend who had gone to both 9:30 club shows (which I thought were excellent) as well as the DAR show said the latter show wasn't as good. Which isn't surprising. It's DAR. DAR DAR DAR. Nice looking building, though.
-
I think I've mentioned this on other threads but as someone who's been seeing Wilco live for a good 6/7 years now, I think their live show has decreased in overall enjoyment as it becomes more and more of an 'event', now that they're and 'important' band
didn't see the DAR show - I remember tix being too expensive for me to justify it
-
i know some people who went to the DAR show, and apparently the show was quite good until some guy was getting his picture taken with the band sort of as a background, and jeff got pissed off...supposedly, the show was cut short on account of his damaged mood. needless to say, the guy may have got the picture, but probably didn't make any friends that night.
-
i hope so, dj ballsac..., i need the relief.

my bet is $35.00 or so...
bring your own painkillers with which to pelt Mr. Tweedy.
-
i went to the DAR show, and i think it was a bad mix. i am a bigger sonic youth fan, granted, but wilco was a bit of a downer after sy. not because they weren't good, just their songs are slower. i had a good time, not really complaining. kind of like the new one, that one really long song just ruins the flow.

What are you smoking? Find a band that can stand up to Wilco, just try.

The show at the Chance in Poughkeepsie sold tickets for $25 each. How about using that as the business model, 9:30?

The Chance is this dinky, pretty run down club 80 miles from a major city. Though I have very fond memories of Tommy Keene playing there, basically to me and my friends....it's decorated to look like a ship. Very funny place, like so many places in Poughkeepsie....
-
So the fact that is was only $25 to see them at a really small venue should translate to cheaper prices in a larger venue such ad 9:30 club.

Right, cause demand will be so much lower in DC, and operating costs are de minimis in comparison to Po-town.
Beer at a bar in Poughkeepsie is $2 too. Same concept.
I swear I don't know why folks complain about 9:30 prices. I think they're amazingly reasonable considering so many shows still go for $12, $15. The more expensive shows are usually at the behest of the artist.

I was going to reply, but I think you have it covered. Econ 101.

So it was Wilco that determined a $25 cover charge for the show in Poughkeepsie (which sold out rather quickly)? Can we expect tWilco to charge us $25 at the 9:30 Club?

We'll have to see what Wilco does. They do have tour managers as well, who may be aware that the band's "get" price in DC could be higher. We'll see.
How many times does Seth have to say that high prices are almost always driven by the artist? If I had pollard's patience and technology, I'd look up all those other threads.
-

technoly, not technology, technoly
-
If they have a "set" price they charge per show, ticket price should be determined my venue capacity. That is, the larger the venue, the lesser the cost.
If they have a varying rate they charge depending on show, that throws the first paragraph off.
Of course, I know I'm oversimplifying things. No need to go into a boring longwinded explanation.

Cost is officially $25 for Wilco according to the Wilcoworld page.
So there's actually two pre-sales going on tomorrow? Looks like there's a 9:30 Club pre-sale that goes through Tickets.com and there's also a pre-sale going on through Wilcoworld. Choices, choices... Any suggestion as to which would be best?
-
Do you mean which will have less traffic?
I have found when utilizing pre-sales via musictoday, the total cost of the ticket is face value, minus the hefty service fees (if there was one, it was definitely less than tickets.com by at least $3), and the ticket is will call only. Just make sure you are signed up and have the password ahead of time. Test the log in if you can. Musictoday sometimes has problems w/ their passwords, and sounds like time is of the essence for your purchase. :)

No sweat. You could also have both windows open at time of purchase if you are having problems, they are busy, or I misquoted... ;) Oh, and if it is in fact will call (my experience) - print your receipt! ;)
-
P.S. Probs, etc.: Musictoday help phone #: 800-594-Tixx (all the ticketing site shows is an email address for a [help] contact).
-
Ended up using Tickets.com. I couldn't get any tickets from Musictoday. It kept saying there weren't any left, even though I surely got in during the first 30 seconds.
-
Where do you find the tickets on tickets.com?
I don't see anything listed?

-
I never got an e-mail from 9:30 about a ticket.com password. Not sure why.
I ended up using Music Today and finally got tickets at about 10:20. You have to keep trying.
-
Could someone also pm me the tickets.com password? gregpope@yahoo.com
Much appreciated.
-
Thanks, Pollard, I will now have to MUZZLE my excitement until the show, where I will gladly buy you a beer.

i lucked out at musictoday, and was able to get tix though.
-

I never get the e-mails, even though I've tried to sign up like five times, so I have no idea if it was in any of the e-mails. I do know that this password was in the monthly flyer that they mail out to people. I'm talking "old school" mail here, USPS. You can also pick up the flyer at record stores and such.

Didn't even know that existed. Why not send an email? (Not asking you, pollard, though I suspect you likely have an answer :D ) Because, if it went out in a monthly newsletter, they've obviously known the password for some time. It's all odd - -why not put it in the email newsletter?
-
How about a PM? I'd love to get the password in a PM (please).
What does "Volume Presale" mean, anyway? Scalpers only?
-
hey all-
both sites appear to be completely sold out. damn damn damn wilcoworld and its shitty ticketing system.
looks like i'll be sleeping out to get tix when they go on sale for real.
-
Also shut out this morning on WilcoWorld.net, I can't believe how fast they went. Could some kind soul pleeeeeeease e-mail me the password for tomorrow's sale? jmtaylor_4life@yahoo.com. Much appreciated.
-
somebody help me! please email me the password!

Yes! Yes! We need more technololy! No, not just email... text messaging to my phoney! send it to my cereal bowl and have the alfa-bits spell it out!

Why they couldn't just put the date there is beyond my understanding.

My new name is more fun than "bags," for which you could just do "balls," isn't it....like the 'sacktastic' -- good touch.
-
i was wondering that exact same thing
-
When you click on the link, it says Wednesday. So it looks like we get to do this all over again tomorrow.
-
That's interesting... why?
I don't really like alt-country and am not a big fan of their latest, but YHF was really good, and I respect the guys for their contribution to modern music...
I saw them last summer at Milwaukee's Summerfest. Got there too late and couldn't see a thing, so paid $6 to go up in a giant ferris wheel to see 'em. It was really funny... because Summerfest has picnic tables, all the fans were stainding in straight rows (on the seat, two rows on the table, etc.) It was surreal.

ah ha. . . . we are foiled again, then.

Yes, I guess there's not much that's alt-country about them at this point. Though I haven't heard the new one.

-
The pre-sale is over so you all can stop asking for the password, which was listed a few times in this thread anyways...
-
Their new one is available for free download on Soulseek and then make a donation at www.justafan.org (http://www.justafan.org) to cover the cost.
It's a return to where they were-- far more country-ish than YHF and I would argue far less likely to be considered a milestone in modern rock.
