Hey, im going to school At CUA this fall and im into the whole jam music scene... just coming back from all good 2005 and being a follower of Chad in his State radio as well as all my locals... Just curious hows this venue? Packed? Fun? whats the whole deal (9:30 CLUB)
-
GREAT venue. Packed when sold out but very comfortable when not, just like many other places in that regard. It's mostly a standing venue with very few chairs. The place rocks! More or less, state of the art as far as showcasing the bands. In fact, the bands tend to love the place. Several bars all around the place. In the club itself, there is the main floor and then an upstairs which is more like a mezzanine that wraps around the walls with a very big hole in the floor that allows you to see the crowd down below.
There's also the Backbar which you cannot see the bands play from but it's downstairs as oppossed to in the back. You see, it was the Backbar from the old club that was brought over to this newer one. It's very tiny, or intimate, and nice to hang in after the show or during if you can't handle some band onstage or whatever reason you choose to go there.
It's a very professionally run place so don't expect any half-ass shit to have to deal with. And don't bother asking about if you can light up there. As in, the Jam bands favorite brand of smoke. Your ass will feel the sidewalk faster than you can take a toke if you do try. They aren't going to loose their club for that so don't even try.
As far as Jam bands go, I'll leave those details to Redsock, aka Big Jamsock, as he is the man with anything and everything that you would ever want to know about Jam bands. :D
-
yes, it is a wonderful place.
there are wonderful places to see music all over DC.
welcome to the area
-
Since you're probably wondering...Yes, they let you smoke weed at the 9:30 Club. sometimes they even pass it out at the door.
-
...and in addition to info. from nice people like at the top of this thread, you will also be fed a lot of crap from a bunch of hostile, elitist pricks (most of whom are just old and grouchy cause they're losing their hair, their hearing and their minds) who believe you should only like THEIR fav. bands/genres/ancient idols...It is usually very funny, unless they come after YOU...so just remember the playground and all the bullies...If you run away, they chase you more. Welcome to dc. 930 is the BEST club - the musicians' and fans' gold standard - but there are many more live music venues...check out:

for the record there is very little hostility and thinning hair on this forum, more instigating then i'd like, but in general a pretty civil... sure i'd like people to like the bands i pimp here, but understand they aren't exactly everyone cup of tea... and so what if i thought the Kaiser Chief peformance was subpar

Who's talking about you? You have more hair and better manners than the bunch of 'em added together. ;)

whatever.
as i hope is widely known information; anybody who has the nerve to be a jackass on a message board is truly lame. it's one thing to be rude in person; but online??
don't put up with the high horses.
(well, don't put up with them in person, either, but...you get what i'm saying)

Yes, it's much worse to be rude online than in person.

but what if i am just a rude person? am i supposed to be abnormally polite just cause its the internet?
you americans complain about people being mean all the time, and then make fun of Canadians cause "they are all nice" you people are never happy.
and if you want crappy jam band music. check out
the funk box (http://www.thefunkbox.com/) in Baltimore

no, you aren't supposed to be abnormally polite.
if one is generally rude, i wouldn't expect them to be any nicer à l'internet. i'd HOPE they would be, but wouldn't expect it.
i just happen to find it ridiculous that some people (i'm not finger pointing...) power-struggle in their everyday lives, so they enjoy being rude on the internet for no apparent reason.
i personally have not had a problem with any of you on here; you are all wonderful.
i feel like i've scared our newcomer...

I am also new to DC and have a few questions. I just moved last week from KC, but have already been to a couple shows at the 9:30 (Teenage Fanclub/Rosebuds, Kaiser Chiefs/Cribs). I liked the venue and DJing, but wasn't really impressed with the live sound - especially during the Fannies, where it was far too bassy on the floor). Is this a recurring problem or an isolated event? Is the sound generally better on the balcony?
I am also trying to locate the best CD stores in town. My wife and I had a list of 25 things and we were only able to find 6 or 7 of them after hitting a few places on Saturday. (My tastes are aging hipster - Big Takeover magazine-ish). So far, Melody seems to have the most comprehensive indie selection but the prices were just ok. Crooked Best was pretty small but I noticed they had some good imports and a liked the atmosphere and help. Nothing else I have visted was very good. I still haven't been to Tower.
So are there any other stores, especially good used discs stores in town, or should I stick with ordering from Parasol and Insound?
Thanks for your help.
-
try the cd/game exchange on wisconsin. i'm not sure the exact address; but it's accross the street from best buy and blah blah blah...hopefully somebody else can hook you up with an address?
i think they have another one elsewhere...
pretty good prices.
there's also CDepot in college park, which i have mixed reviews for. sometimes you can find good stuff there, and sometimes it is steeply overpriced...it really depends.
i usually don't really buy cds here, though.

CD Cellar in Clarendon and Falls Church.
Good selection of used CDs. Prices aren't bargain basement, but they generally have a lot of fairly recent releases between $8 and $10.

Well the sound at the Fannies show was anomaly for the club and it only lasted for a short period of time. Not quite sure what happened but it could have easily been a equipment glitch, like what happened at the Walkman show awhile back.
For record stores checkout Joe's Record Paradise in Rockville, CDepot in College Park, or CD Cellar in Falls Church. CDepot is ok with newer stuff, good back catalog choices, prices on some used stuff high compared to other stores. Hadn't been to CD Cellar for awhile but will be checking it out more frequently now that my brother will be living near by. Nice selection of used imports picked up Johnny Thunder, The Rich Kids, a Japanese version of Led Zep III with the rotating wheel.
In general the CD stores in the DC area suck... The best local chain is Record & Tape Traders but it's in and around Baltimore. Soundgarden in Baltimore has a great selection.
-
Oh, I high-tailed it upstairs at that show. The bass was way too loud from the get-go. (*edit: you are right Kosmo, the bass glitch was at the beginning and went away shortly)
A week earlier, a show was way too loud in volume. However, there were not a lot of patrons. Hard to gauge [lately]. Generally the sound is fine...
I do head upstairs if it's too loud on the floor.
(Btw, sometimes the DJ sound is too loud. Thanks Kosmo for keeping it even. ;) )

DC doesn't have one "stand-out" CD store, Crooked Beat is decent, I find Melody a little overpriced
I shop alot at Revolution.
http://www.revolutionrecords.net/ (http://www.revolutionrecords.net/)
Why? Its near my house (and a metro stop), the prices are really good (new CDs generally $12/13 max and often cheaper) and Nayan the owner is a nice guy.
Yes, its small, and yes, their selection could be better but they will order stuff for you.....

that pretty much describes the feeling on this board for jam bands. There's no love from the hipsters here - maybe their argyle got too tight or there was some bad ingredients in their black hair dye, who knows.
Jam bands definitely come to 9:30 regularly, but if your version of a jam band is State Radio or Dispatch, I guess you wouldn't care that real improvisational musicians like Keller Williams and Soulive are coming on the same weekend in November. STS9 plays here all the time (including a show in october), so does ratdog, particle, yonder mountain stribg band, and the disco biscuits played here like 12 times or something when they actually toured.
But, again, don't come to this board trying to find out information on jam bands at 9:30. All you'll find is people dismissing music that sells out the 9:30 club immediately because its "hippy" music, or because its genre isn't three or more words. But hey, people are people. And you can take comfort with the fact that a lot of the people fluffing these bands will not like them in a few years because a bunch of other people start liking the band after them and they can no longer name drop them in a conversation to try to out-obscure their other hipster friends.
Have fun, and don't make me kick you out for smokin' the heady nugz with your crew, brah...

Dude, you seem to be as, or more, judgemental than any of the rest of us, harshing on someone's version of jam bands. Where's the hippy love, my friend???

I don't give a shit about the "levels of jam bands" -- I'm calling wallawalla out on the hypocrisy of putting down the 'indie folks' here and then judging someone else's taste. Actually, thank god I don't know the difference among jam bands -- that would mean I spent time listening. :D
-
Haven't you ever seen Bags during a show? When she gets that one-arm-in-the-air thing going? It definitely hints at a background of twirly-dancing.

ohmygod, that is SO not twirly!! That is rock n' roll!!! I told a friend, though, that the arm in the air is a sure sign the band's playing a song I know.

Hypocrite, nah, thats not what I am at all. Of course there are bad jam bands and poser jam bands, i'll be the first to admit it - just like there are bad indie bands, poser indie bands, and good indie bands, etc. But unlike lots of you who haven't really ever given jam bands a fair shot (beyond listening to some phish or grateful dead) I've actually lsitened to them, been to the shows and really don't get into it, and I certainly didn't dismiss it in some sort of weird identity thing, like its against the cool kid code of ethics to like jam bands. If, like me, you've given them a chance, and if that's your story with jam bands, cool, they're not for everybody - just like all kinds of music. My post was meant to highlight the inordinate amount of immediate dismissal that many of you exhibit on this board whenever any jam band is brought up.

so if you don't go around to jam band shows and festivals so you can officially say you don't like jam bands, you're close-minded?? a "fair shot" means paying money to go to shows you know you won't enjoy?

Sound is generally better on the floor as that is where the sound guy mixing the whole thing is located. Often times there will be problems when a band starts as someone might have turned up the amp or bumped a knob or fader between sound check and the show. Usually when the band starts, the guy out front is trying to be sure everything is happening and then correct for the smaller and smaller "flaws" in the sound. So I usually concider the first song to be the sound check part 2.

Great Hipster has become demonized like Liberal.
What is so wrong to being "Hip" to new music.. I'm hip to plenty of new music that the indie rock snobs, jam fans, other forumites would turn their noses up at.
Along the likes of what Hoya said, some of the hipster "approved" bands that gain and then lose popularity, are in part because why should we pay money to be surrounded by a bunch of rude people who came late to the party. It great for the band to gain a wider fanbase, it sucks to a fan who is used to seeing them in more intimate settings.
I'll bet this board isn't as Hipster fested as you think. There are as many Arcade Fire supporters as there are detractors...
But all that doesn't matter because we get called all sorts here...
-
So the implication is that the people who "came late to the party" are somehow more rude than hipsters?

I don't go to shows of bands i don't like, just like every sane person in the world. But I don't make judgements on any kind of music because its hippy music, or black music, or country music, or whatever. Maybe you just don't enjoy the music, or what they do live just doesn't appeal to you. Again, that's fine. But saying "it's fucking hippy music" or whatever the instant reply around here is when anyone asks what the setlist at a Ben Harper show is or posts a roll call for a jam band is at best immature and at worst idiotic. Either way, its an inadequate critique of music. I'm not saying you're necessarily the culprit, but all too often I see it here. And the thread about poser jam bands is so illustrative of my point. The same joke can be made about any genre of music, including whatever music you listen to.
And TheLastDispatch, the best place soundwise in the 9:30 club (other than VIP) is definitely front of house. The best place to watch a show though, is different, especially if people are dancin' and flailing. I prefer about 1/3 of the way back from stage right on the main floor. There's easy access to the bar/foodfood, as well as the best in/out access to your spot in the club (although if its sold out it's not easy to get in/out anywhere).

frankly, i think people are just trying to be funny ... it's not like this board is a haven for measured and responsible critiques of music

I am not even reading this whole stupid thread, but i feel like i started it sorta, since wallawalla dudes initial rant was responding to my little comment.
so let me say this:
I just said "crappy" jam bands. i didnt spend a whole 30 minutes calling them names, insulting thier fans intelligence or anything like that. I have been in and out of many music "scenes" from punk rock to electronic to rock and so have my friends. I have been to many "jam band" shows (my friend used to work at the Funk Box) and have seen STS9, Karl Denson, dark star orch, phish, oar, disco biscuits and many other ones that even jam band people dismiss, and i have generally found the crowds at these shows to be rude, overly fucked up and basically a bunch of over-privileged jerks who like to rant on about their views of the world (most of which contradict their actions)
the music is crappy. a good amount of the people who listen to them are fucking obnoxious. and its my choice, or anyone elses to feel that way.
i love how whenever someone says they dont like something, someone who does automatically dismissing them as knowing nothing about it.
face it, jam bands are like rave music, you need drugs to enjoy it. otherwise its a stagnant genre where the innovators are gone and all thats left are the uncreative leftovers.

And I haven't heard "why don't you cry about it" since grade school. It's fucking priceless.
Wow... this is MY point exactly. Your inability to process sarcasm, satire, or any semblence of humor in an off-the-cuff remark makes you look like the knee-jerk reactionary you are. Sorry among a close-knit message board of (mostly) intelligent, aged music fans who've been around the block a time or two, we don't feel the need to articulate our views on jam bands in a more erudite fashion. The only function that would serve is "preaching to the converted" and qualify as an utter waste of our time. Sorry some kid who just registered needs convincing that shit smells; it's not our job to push your face in it and make you take a whiff.

That's a completely subjective statement. I don't do any drugs, and I don't like jam music in general. But I think I could tolerate jam band music more than most Radiohead albums.

that makes no sense other than a shameless jab at my favourite band, which i am used to and pay no attention to anymore!
you dont do drugs or enjoy jam bands, which was my original point.

I think I could tolerate most jam bands more then I could the inane iconoclastic spiels that come from Rhett.

Maybe you're right, maybe I am some kid who just registered (oooh, I'm such a newb), but if you really wanted to convicne me that "the shit smells" in reference to jam bands, you should know that its going to take a lot more than calling jam bands "hippy music" or saying you need drugs to listen to it to convince me other wise. Gee, I don't think I've ever heard those arguments before (that's sarcasm right there).
I guess when I say I don't like a type of music or a band or whatever, even when its on a close-knit message board full of people "who've been around the block once or twice," I reply with something slightly more substantive than "fuck hippies - you stoners." I'm not asking for a Christgau-esque dissertation, but, call me crazy, you are the one who called this board full of intelligent people.

first off, i said enjoy, not listen. big difference. secondly, if you've heard that argument before and perhaps repeatedly, maybe its because ITS TRUE!
if you would like some elaboration on my comment , i would be more than happy to elaborate. i am not just making crazy comments here. but since it sounds like you are just all in a tizzy, wasting my time explaining my point (in how jam bands and raves are the same general being and how they've both creatively run their course) would just cause you to throw some "i work at the club" or "when i say i dont like a band" comment.
you've pegged us all as elitist pricks, what else is left to cover?

You're missing my point. I don't have the slightest desire whatsoever to convince you jam bands suck, nor does anyone else here. That's exactly why most of us aren't even being slightly lucid in our arguments or comments on jam bands - we don't care at all what you think, we're contented enough with our own view. Do we have better reasons then "damn hippies"/"stoners suck"? Of course, we just don't feel the need to make an argument over the issue when 98% of the people here agree with that point of you already. You're the one who cannot accept the 9:30.com status quo and feels the need to give discertations about your point of view.

And the status quo is always right, godamnit! God bless George W. Bush, and God bless the United States of America!

I'm not saying the status quo is always right, just that the status quo doesn't have an impetus to "win over" a fractured minority segment, particularly over something as relatively unimportant as whether people like jam music. But to go with your political analogy, if America voted Republican by the same precentage as people who hate jam music (we'll say 95%?), do you think the GOP would waste their time trying to win over the other 5%?

Alright, I guess I'll just accept the "status quo," - its scary that there even is a status quo for the 9:30 club. I think I had different perceptions of what this board was about than some of you. I though it was supposed to be about discussing music, shows, etc. Now that I know its about discussing certain types of music that fall under the "status quo" of a handful of people who dominate this board with thousands people that's run by a club which, last time I checked, regularly has jam bands play on their stage, I'll think twice when trying to defend a type of music I like.

I don't think anybody was trying to "win over" anyone. Just defending their preferred genre of music when someone referred to it as "crappy".

Walla-Walla: Great strategy, and I hope it works. Now, when Radiohead does play around here, the tickets won't sell out in five minutes cause all the forum hipsters are too embarrassed to be seen there. Thanks, dood.
BTW: If a jam band is good (to MY ear) I'll be there standing next to you! ;) After all, I'm the chick who still goes to the Grog and Tankard if a musician I know and like is playin' there. Loyalty is NOT highly over-rated.

it is, but like in most other conversational venues (the water cooler, a bar, etc), you will be mocked for professing your love of jam bands ... isn't that why you guys put together week long festivals? so you can hang out with like minded people?

on the whole elitist prick tip ... i was having this conversation with a girl at a party this weekend about the bravery, and i literally just had to walk away ... i didn't want to be an asshole, and i couldn't take it any longer
anyone had a similar experience?

the thing about jam music is that i grew up listening and seeing the jazz bebop elite, miles, dexter, dizzy, stan, mingus, etc, plus fusion musicians like jaco... so in theory i would drift towards its, but once punk came along i never looked back. my one exposure to phish came in a record store where the lyric "train running load on coal" was repeated for what seemed an eternity and i seriously wanted to shoot the place up. and don't bother making recommendations i have enough music already i don't listen to....

i hate being labeled an elitist prick. most of the time, the people that are doing said labeling will get to know me and realize i know a lot more about "their" music than they think.
oh, and, by the way?
this thread has gotten ridiculous.
is everybody EVER going to agree on the same bands, the same genres, the same shows, 100%?
no. we aren't.
we ARE here to discuss music and shows and whatever the hell else we feel like discussing, but we aren't all always going to agree.
we're only human.
so please, stop picking fights on the interweb and get along.
there is a fine line between a constructive debate, and a message board brawl.

I had a long dentist appointment a few weeks ago, and they told me I could bring some cd's to listen to when the dentist was drilling my teeth. I brought a Josh Rouse and a Ron Sexsmith cd.
The (gay) front desk guy looked at my cd's unknowingly, and said, "Have you ever heard the Killers? They have this album called 'Hot Fuss', it's really good, you should really check it out." I pretended not to know who they are, though in all honesty I don't know if I've heard any of their songs.

Constructive debates are for work, school, and talk amongst friends.
Message board brawls is what this board is all about. Unfortunately, most of the people here all like the same stuff, so it gets pretty boring.

of COURSE i have had a similar experience.
i'm in high school, for chrissake.
99% of the people they surround me with daily have NO CLUE.
quite a few people won't even discuss music with me, for fear of getting shot down.
but when they do, it's like...LAUGH-O-RAMA.
in the last six months, especially, you have no idea how many times i've gotten the
"omigod, have you heard of like...The Postal Service? they are on the Garden State soundtrack, and they are like, sooooo good!!!111one. i thought you might, like, know who they are because you like, know everything about music, and, omigod i love that song Such Great Heights. it's sooooo, like, mellow. omigod! now we have something in common!!!!11eleven"

people always offer me cds to listen to at work, of course I dont want to be rude so I listen and then I have to say, yeah it was ok, not really my thing, but not bad, which for some reason says to them that I loved it and they only bring in more

Yes, nod, mumble fake agreeance, walk away.
I get free stuff sometimes and pass along to Kosmo. Then he has a vast amount of music for any type of show. ;)
One doc appt. I had, they picked the music [for me]. I told them it was rather loud. They said, "What? You don't like John Mayer??? What would you prefer?" I said, "Quiet."
They looked like a bunch of hurt puppies.
Talk about stereotyping. They took one look at me and thought I'd like to hear Mayer while going through a medical procedure?
If there ever is a need, or next time, I'm bringing in my own Kosmomix.
