Title: Restaurant Recommendations around 9:30 Club?
Post by: phillyhokie on July 26, 2005, 03:00:00 pm
I will be travelling up for the David Gray show in 2 weeks and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a restaurant to have dinner at before the show?  I have researched the U Street restaurants and just wanted to see what people of the area recommended.  Thanks for the help.

What are you looking for? A decent sit down place or something cheap (a la Ben's Chili Bowl)?

i often go to  Saloon (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?node=entertainment/profile&id=1027857&typeId=5&type=keyword) before shows, solid food and great beer ... there are a lot of good ethiopian places in the area and a pretty wide selection of  other restaurants (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?node=entertainment/search&type=restaurants&sort=name&neighborhood=UStreet&option=4002)

as I'm not a big beer nerd, I usually just ask my waiter for a recommendation ... they have a huge selection of belgian and european beers, you haven't found something you've liked there?

nope, and I have tried several, not even a simple lager, they have Brooklyn Lager there if my mind serves me correctly, and Brooklyn Lager tastes like what I imagine a brooklyn street might taste like

speaking of area restaurants, has anyone ever checked out that ethiopian place on W st near 10th (i think that's right)?  it's in the bottom floor of a townhouse, and looks exactly like a normal home, i was surprised they were able to get around zoning regulations and such for it ...

well, there's no pleasing you. but i believe its well-known that if you want a decent beer in this city you are going to have to spend some money on it. quality = higher price   ;)

Who wants to eat Ethiopian anyway? Judging by how skinny they are, not even Ethiopians. Can't comment on the meat dishes, but Ethiopian vegetetarian sucks.

As a vegetarian, I'd be interested in hearing your comments on which ethnic foods have the best vegetarian menus, in your estimation. Living in the Richmond market, our idea of "ethnic" is Chinese/Italian/Mexican, so any menus outside of those that I could try when in DC I'd be interested in learning more aobut.

Indian is the best for vegetarians. They have the widest variety of vegetable dishes. Not just tofu, which I hate. My favorite is bhindi masala, spiced okra in a curry tomato sauce. In fact at 18th and K NW there is an Indian restaurantcalled Nirvana that is totally vegetarian.

I would concur. Indian is the best, and Nirvana is an excellent place to start.

Mexican is good, but my wife and I seem to both cook better than any local Mexican places we've been to.

We like Thai and of course Italian as well.

You can also get some good vegetarian tapas dishes as well, though I've only done that once or twice.

I agree...if you're a veggie Indian is the best by far...although I would never eat in a place called "Nirvana" just on principle.

I'm convinced that this Ben's Chili Bowl place pays people to mention their name everytime 'food' is mentioned on this board because it's like a race for some of you to see who can get it posted first. Reality is, any dufus can make a decent pot of chili.

I went to some El Salv place that is closing soon and for good reason.

It was one of the lamest dining experiences I had in my life.  THey couldn't even make a bowl of salsa taste good.  SALSA for gods sake!!  This thing was nothing but a bucket of water it had NO FLAVOR!!

THen on top of that it took forever to get a beer in the place, and then i ordered this shrimp pasta thing and the pasta was burnt.. BURNT!! what kind of retard BURNS pasta?!?!?

The seafood soup my wife had, was nothing to write home about either..

Thank god this place is dissapearing no wonder why!!  cripes I wish I can remember the name of it, it's on the corner of U and I think 12th??  They had an article about the place in the post cause it had been there a long time and was closing (duh).

Coppi's Organic is a great plac in the U street area.  not so close to the club though.

Some people like to feel like real hep cats; Ben's Chili Bowl is their only chance to hang with the black folk.

Oohs and Aahhs, 10th and U. Soul Food and more. New dining area open upstairs, and it won't run you a lot of money. I don't believe they have a liquor license though.

this place has been receiving pretty good buzz on the local foodie fora

If you don't mind going over to another neighborhood, yet not that far, Joyti on 18th St. in Adams Morgan is nice and not too pricey. I've eaten there on a number of occassions and have always enjoyed myself and have been pleased with the food. It's Indian so you will find a variety of selections to appeal to your vegetarian tastes.

Also, on the same block are Mezzé and the American Diner. (I may have screwed up those names a bit.) You can get a nice meal in these places too and find a few things that would appeal to vegetarians. You should do well in all three. Just be careful if you are driving because parking in Adams Morgan is impossible on heavy social nights, like weekends.
