is there any worse band than Mates Of State?
and this was the ONE damn festival-ish thingy i thought i would make this year.....cant see driving to NYC just to see VHS or Beta.
-

maybe the dears. maybe. that lineup is, obviously, super lame.
-
Dungen might be cool to see.
-
If I can't get into the Spoon show this Fri, I would probably make the trip to NYC. Would also love to see Dungen. And The Dears are much better live than on record.
Dinosaur Jr. and Broken Social Scene are playing Central Park a couple days before. Here's to hoping that one or both get added to the lineup...
-
Dungen might be cool to see.
yeah, that "ta det lugnt" album is pretty cool. i wonder how it's pulled off live.

yes. many.
i quite like mates of state.
-
i thought The Dears set at the TSOOL concert was brilliant and of course Brendan is da man... however, none of this for me would be enjoyable while being baked on concrete... maybe finally Brendan is headed our way as a headliner.

it must be good bike riding music.
they remind me of that SNL couple (will ferrell and some chick) doing those singalongs.

Nope...Anna Gasteyer.

lol, that's pretty true actually... never thought of that.
But I also do quite like a lot of their stuff...just have always thought they're in bad need of a decent producer. Then again, I guess that sound is part of their charm.

No, I don't think so.
They are even worse than Fiery Furnaces.
If I were locked in a room with those bands playing, I'd have to kill them or somehow make myself deaf and shut my eyes.
UGHHHH!!!

Just added:
Ambulance Ltd
Morningwood
Diamond Nights
Arcade Fire a possibility

although the lineup is improving and becoming more attractive, I think I need a few more bands to really make me want to go to it.
-
Last year there were 14 bands, so I'm guessing they'll add at least another 4. Arcade Fire would seal the deal for me.

Don't get me wrong, Arcade Fire would make it killer. But it's not enough with just those bands to make me want to travel to Coney Island.

Quintron and Miss Pussycat
-
More added:
Saul Williams
Be Your Own Pet
Nine Black Alps
Detachment Kit
-
JEEZ-ZUS CHRIST! that's gonna be a hot show!

no really, it's gonna be hotter than hell in queens in july.

it is...strategically situated between the cool breezes blowing down the East river...and the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island.

Schedule (http://www.villagevoice.com/siren/2005/schedule.html)
Think I'm gonna pass this year...
-
looks like i'll be in NYC next weekend ... not sure if i'm going to this, but it might be nice to just catch brendan benson then spoon on the main stage
-
Benson's the only act I'd really want to catch. The others that I like I've seen several times, and I thought Spoon was awful live...
-
Well, I am back from NYC and the Siren festival among other things.
Its the 3rd time i have been and it really pays to go to these things a few times in a row, to get a good game plan.
however, we got sidetracked and didnt really catch many of the bands, but heres what we did cach
Ambulance - they are fucking great. I cant believe i have never took the time to see them live, totally sound like Sonic Youth at times, but keep their own sound as well. I love em!!!
Morningwood - no, please no, you are stupid.
Saul Williams - one of the greatest rappers of the 21st century. so good, and Adlib (Thavius Beck) is the man too. he made a crazy comment about how the terror attacks in London made us forget about the people dying in Africa, which was the tone for the whole previous weekend, and how fucked up it was. no one seemed to be listening though.
Brendan Benson - ummm, i know everyone here loves him, and that Folk Singer song is cool , but he's pretty boring and i dont see anything special about him. not bad, but really, he's not going to save the world.
Spoon - ok. thats really all i can say, not my cup of tea but they are good musicians.
other than that, Nathans hotdogs, 2 girls brawling on the beach, and $5.99 64oz beers were all i needed to make my day very enjoyable.
one more thing, maybe they can try to get bands on faster next year, it was like 30 minutes in between bands, and thats a long time to be standing in the heat listening to some wannabe hipster DJ over the roadies checking the drums....
-
Oh man, how friggin' hot was it? Just too much of a nightmare for me, all that heat and smooshed into spaces.
I've never seen Benson, and I wouldn't be surprised if his live show doesn't measure up. His albums are fantastique, though...

really, it wasnt TOO bad. it wasnt bad during the bands, but in between, was a little grueling.
but i am 6'1" so i can usually get the breeze over most people's heads, my GF is not so lucky :(
-
I saw Brendan Benson on hte Black Cat backstage...think Kosmo was there too...and can vouch for his excellency live....right Kosmo?
-
yup saw Brendan and his Wellfed boys several times on the last tour and every night was a slightly different, some nights they rocked out, others a bit mellow, but always great...
however, there is a new version of the Wellfed boys this time out which i've seen yet, but it's going to have to be good to match version 1.0

Didn't realzie you were there, so was i. The line-up wasn't great, but i had fun at Coney Island in general. And it was all free. Q and Not U were pretty damn good, and the Dears were good. VHS or beta needed to play when it was dark out. Spoon is just plain boring live, been saying that for years. Other than that, saw some cool breakdancers, a couple guys fight (literally) over the port-a-johns, and got to hang out at the ocean for a little bit. A succesful day i would say.

perhaps when i am older and dont like things to be so entertaining, I will appreciate his live show. :)
-
did the thought occur to you brendan was going through the motions?
anyways... Well Fed boys version 2.0 is
Matt - drums orginial WF dawg
Dean - guitar on loan from the Waxwings
Michael - bass on loan from the Twilight Singers
Anyone remember on the first season of the Real World that Andre had a band stowed away in NJ? Well Dean was a member and chief songwriter for Reigndance, found a of thiers CD in a bargin bin and it's not half bad. Much better than I expected it to be..
-
I have seen Benson twice, and have not been impressed either time, and I am a fan of his recorded work
of course the first time was opening for the white stripes and i had never heard of him at that point, and the second time he followed Jesse Malin, Malin is boring enough to kill any show
-
Perhaps when you are older and don't like for things to be so entertaining, you will appreciate Brendan's live show. Though my guess is that there will never be any hope to enjoy a live Jesse Malin show.

I sure dont find Ambulance LTD entertaining (although I know lots of people do), so who knows what is wrong with me.

somehow it struck me as Ambulance would be a better band at an outdoor show, than in a smaller club. i dont know why though. they look like they are all still in high school too.

I would like them a lot more if I could actually make out the lead singer's voice. Ive only seen em once at Black Cat and while I liked the gig, the singers voice struck me as very very weak...

i think thats what i mean. they sounded very very crisp at Siren. I could understand all the lyrics (even to the songs i didnt know) and the guitars, drums and vocals all sounded very well mixed. i think a lot of times outdoors is just better to hear music.
-
now thats just silly talk...
-
I love Ambulance and I've heard them about six times now. The worst (even worse that Fretcher's) was the last Black Cat show. Vocals were missing cause the BC speaker was blown...can't believe they're still looking so youthful after a KILLER touring schedule. I just wish they'd stay home long enuf to record a new CD...can't wait 'til they're back in DC tho. Thanks for the review.
-
But how do they stack up against Kenin?
-

they have to find a song to copy for the single first

well, maybe. inside an acoustically prepared venue, sure, the sound will be much better. but we know the Black Cat, Fletchers etc are just merely bars with a stage and enough room to hold more than 50 people. certainly not someplace built with acoustics in mind.
