Title: Morcheeba
Post by: markie on January 17, 2003, 02:31:00 pm
Well I for one am really looking forward to Morcheeba on Tuesday night.<P>Is anyone else going? Anyone know what they play or how they do the Kurt Wagner and Slick Rick songs?

This so qualifies as a girlfriend show (unlike, say, Burning Brides and Division of Laura Lee tonight) and, appropriately, I'll be there with my girlfriend.

I've seen Morcheeba once before and was impressed with their set. Could be worth the time to see again and hear some new songs.

thinking about it more, I guess Morcheeba and Portishead both get characterised as trip hop. <P>Portishead are slow and mellow and jazzy<P>Morcheeba are more groove funk based with a big slice of pop dance thrown in. They are much more upbeat.<P>Both bands live in the wake of massive attack. But it goes to show the depth of Massive attacks ability to influence so many and varied bands.<p>[This message has been edited by markie (edited 01-18-2003).]

I've got a few (audio) bootlegs and while I do hear strings, they sound like they're of the canned/pre-recorded variety. Could be wrong, but that's what it sounds like. <BR>Their shows sound pretty laid back, though there are a couple instances of a sizzling guitar solo break, though even then, it's kind of understated. From an audio perspective, they'll probably sound great. Not sure how visually arresting they'll be though.

do you have any idea if they perform women lose weight, or what do new york couples fight about? <P>If so how do they cope withot their guest vocalists?
Title: Re: Morcheeba
Post by: pfunkmusic on January 21, 2003, 02:54:00 pm
Wow, Saying Morcheeba is a portishead rip off is like saying Britney Spears (or whoever else, for that matter) is a Michael Jackson rip off, because they both sing "pop" music.  (I guess I'm refering to MJ back in his hayday circa thriller).  Yes, both Portishead and Morcheeba get grouped into the trip hop genre, but the reason for that stems more from the fact that they are (or were, originally) hard to categorize rather than they are so similar.  If you listen to Big Calm VS. Dummy, the differances are obvious imho, with each group offering a superb album.

well beth gibbons just released a solo album.<P>And to agree with you it seems Morcheeba and Portishead are characterised together for the large part because they are hard to characterise, so get lumped together as British Trip hop. There are few other members of this genre, tricky and alpha come to mind. Little else though.<p>[This message has been edited by markie (edited 01-21-2003).]

Morcheeba did sound great. Having arrived right before they came on, I was stuck way in the back (was surprised at how crowded it was) and still thought they sounded great. The band was really on, and she sounded very nice.<BR>Only complaint was the repeated show-bizzy declarations from the stage. Screaming contests between the guys and the gals just takes up time.

i thought the show was pretty good, but kinda lame at times. what was up with them asking us which albums we had, and who had been to the show 4 years ago?<P>i guess it better than being completely standoffish to the crowd, but i thought it was kinda annoying.<BR>

Yes I thought it was all good fun. Seems some people would rather them run through their set really quickly then piss off.<P>Well they were rewarded for not doing that. That was one of the most appreciative crowds I have seen at the 9.30, but then again it was one of the best shows too.
Title: Re: Morcheeba
Post by: Relaxer on January 22, 2003, 04:21:00 pm
Well, that's a very black-or-white way to see it. There is a middle ground. I appreciate acknowledgement of the crowd and the fans. But I don't necessarily need the singer asking people to scream the albums they've bought or for there to be screaming competitions between the girls and the boys. And really, a band should only have to say "Come on and make some noise!!!!" once, not again and again. <P>And sure they were rewarded by it -- people are going to whoop when they're repeatedly asked to do so. Where I don't think they were that rewarded was when she kept asking the crowd to sing along, and didn't get much in response. <P>Whatever, some people might like that kind of thing, and some don't. I loved their music, so I don't much need to push the argument.

Of course the first question posed to the crowd is, "How are you all doing tonight?".  From there the singer can take two routes, compliment the audience, or ask, "Do you feel like I do?"<P> <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Arial, Veranda">quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by ggw:<BR><B> Proper band etiquette dictates that you must follow up that statement with <I>"I can't hear you"</B></I>  or <I><B>"I know you can do better than that"</B></I>, at least once as well.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE><P>

That was my first time seeing Morcheeba and they far exceeded my expectations.  I was surprised at all the banter and crowd interaction, but I think it created a really good vibe to the show.  At first I thought it sort of took away from the focus and atmosphere of the music, but it loosened up the crowd, which is appreciated here in DC.  And I thought her intentions were good-it wasn't like "Ain't no party like a Morcheeba party" bs.  Like when she asked about which albums people had she seemed sort of amazed and humble that people actually had their albums.  And it showed how much the crowd loved the band and I think both crowd and band fed off that.

excellent show last night. poorlulu and i were able to snag set lists too! paul, at least i think that's his name, hopped over to kingpin after and spun for a bit. the guitarist and bass player came over too. i only stayed a bit though as the work monster managed to find out i was being social and not worrying enough about the pile work that was multiplying faster than rabbits on ecstacy so it kidnapped me after less than an hour at kingpin. <P>markie was right to point out though, that the crowd was excellent. <P>and "dancing joe" was one flyer dancer. <P>rosey, on the other hand, wasn't so excellent. she looked like she belonged on american idol.

happened to be in boston this weekend visiting friends, so kosmette and i headed to the avalon (a really nice club) to see morcheeba.  and what a great show it was.  what a talented group of musicians, playing live without relying on click tracks and racks of midi synths(gotta love the fender rhodes).   totally  impressed with how verasatile the guitar player was. skye is such a remarkable singer and personaility.
