Damn Johnny....another Bruddah down
What can I say about the Ramones?  I've been listening to them for damn near 20 years and their records sound even better to me now than they did when I was 15.

When god made the Ramones, he broke the mold.

RIP Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee.  I'll be popping thorazine and phenobarbital for you guys this weekend.

correct me if I'm wrong: didn't I read somewhere that prostate cancer has a death rate similar to breast cancer, but only gets 1/8th as much funding for research?  Not fair.

Hey dork, making a joke based on his political affiliation or a joke based on a classic argument about the origins of punk seems hardly like an effort to "flame".

Making a joke about prostate cancer or death would  constitute a "flame". You know, like Dupek did when Johnny Cash died.

Making those jokes in a thread about a guy who just died are indeed attempts to flame.  And, coming from you, predictable and boring.

But its ok to flame artists or anybody that arent popular among the masses in here? I think Rhett is doing what everyone else does when someone they don't particularly care about dies. If your gonna poke at someone elses death that you dont like then expect someone to poke at someone that you like. I listen to Cobain's death all the time around here and keep my mouth shut, sure it was a suicide and not cancer, but it's still a death. And GGW, this isn't directed towards you, it's general.

And I am legitiately sorry for cracking a joke about Sonick's grandmother's death. Though it was intended as an anti-smoking jab, I can see how he would be sensitive about it and pained by her death.

Deaths of loved ones are painful, yes. But c'mon, has anybody here actually even met the Johnny Ramone? Lighten up. My jokes were in much better taste than what was said on here immediately after Reagan died.

And who was the person on here making jokes about Clinton's heart attack just minutes after it became news?

Back on topic.....

This is truly a bummer.  But he was suffering for a while now so a small part of me feels good for him.

And yes, the Federal Gov spends about twice as much on Breast Cancer research as it does on Proste Cancer ($870 million next year to $485 million).  I'm not sure of the death rates though.

I think the difference comes from responding to
poor funding years ago; AIDS funding far outstrips either cancers and had far fewer related deaths.  Raise a hew and cry to highlight poor funding, and you can turn it around.  The prostate advocates need to get on it...

From the American Foundation of Urologic Disease (http://www.afud.org/advocacy/cancercompare.asp)

 Cancer comparison

The accompanying slide illustrates the relative position of prostate cancer versus breast cancer and AIDS with respect to number of diagnosed cases, number of deaths and research dollars allocated to the study of each disease.

These charts indicate a current funding gap and demonstrate the need for greater advocacy efforts if federal research funding levels for prostate cancer are to increase in proportion to the effect the disease has on public health.

The breast cancer and AIDS communities have been very active in educating the public about the public impact of the respective diseases. In many ways, their advocacy activities stand as a model for all health interests that wish to educate and influence our governmental representatives when it comes time to appropriate research dollars.

From a Diabetes trade magazine: (http://www.insulinfreetimes.org/00_summer/itimesv600_2.htm)

According to Gary Becker, the 1992 Nobel Laureate, breast cancer research is "so much better funded partly because sufferers are better organized for political activity. Men have tended to keep quiet about their prostate cancers." Becker notes that AIDS research receives four times the funding of breast cancer, and more than 20 times the funds of prostate cancer. "The political effectiveness of AIDS activists surely helps explain why a much larger chunk of the federal budget is allocated to AIDS research than to other terrible and painful ailments," Becker writes.

I remember shedding tears at Joey's passing. I was distraught for a few days. Johnny's death was a shock to me as i read the Express paper on the train this morning. Such a sad way to begin an otherwise enjoyable Friday. R.I.P Johnny.

Amazing though, how when asked if they would ever use another singer -- and from what I assume is  without missing a beat -- Johnny answered that no, Joey was their singer.

That's the truth, but you gotta respect this:

The band had been asked if it would perform with another singer taking Joey's place. "I said, 'No way. See us like we were, or don't see us at all. Go buy the DVD,'" says Johnny. "I would never perform without Joey. He was our singer."

I heard this whole death thing is all a hoax to correspond with the release of "End of the Century".

Rumor has it Johnny is on a wild turkey hunt with the Nuge.
