House of Blues on Sunset Strip in jeopardy of sanctions
West Hollywood's City Council is set to discuss a pattern of violence at the venue, which might result in the club's loss or suspension of its business license.

After a series of violent incidents, the city of West Hollywood might be about to crack down on the House of Blues.
The landmark Sunset Strip nightclub might lose its business license or have it suspended, as the City Council was set to discuss the disturbances Monday night.
Councilman John Heilman introduced the agenda item, citing in his staff report that the House of Blues hasn't improved security after a series of bar fights over the years.
Within the last 12 months, events at the House of Blues have led to 44 arrests for incidents including fights, drunk and disorderly behavior, and grand theft, according to statistics released in Heilman's report. During the same time period, there have been more than 100 sheriff's radio dispatches to the venue.
The most recent bar fight, on Sept. 4, left one woman hospitalized, involved more than 100 people brawling both inside and outside, and shut down the Sunset Strip for most of that Thursday evening, the report said.
In that incident, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies had to request assistance from the L.A. and Beverly Hills police departments while arresting dozens of people on outstanding warrants, battery and drunkenness.
Heilman, who has served on the council since it was formed in November 1984, couldn't be reached before the meeting, but staffers said the report includes the basis of his concern.
"Unfortunately, for the last several years, the House of Blues has had a history of serious problems and an unwillingness to address these problems," the report said. "After each serious incident, there is a perfunctory apology and a promise to reform, but the problems persist and have escalated."
An employee at the Sunset House of Blues gave no comment, saying the club's spokeswoman could not be reached.
Heilman's report said that although management "claims to accept responsibility and expresses a desire to change," the establishment "continues to host events and promote the venue to groups which disrespect the community and the business."
Heilman's report also argues that the number of incidents to which local law enforcement responds is excessive and that the place altogether is disruptive to nearby residents and businesses.
The report lists a series of violent incidents that have occurred this year at the Strip's House of Blues:
* Feb. 27: Patron hit in the face at concert.
* March 23: Large crowd fighting in driveway.
* March 28: Several persons involved in fight. Security requests deputies' assistance to prevent fight from escalating.
* April 26: Deputies called to location. Windows open and loud concert music being played into neighborhood.
* May 23: Fighting in top parking lot.
* June 21: Six men trying to fight with security in nearby driveway.
* June 26: Male in and out of consciousness at venue. Fire rescue unit required.
* June 30: About 50 people fighting at the club.
* July 7: About 200 people from concert in front of club and people getting into fights.
* July 15: Female in and out of consciousness at location. Fire rescue unit required.
* Aug. 5: Man had chair thrown at him in club.
* Sept. 4: More than 100 people were involved in fights both inside and outside. Several people were arrested. One woman was hospitalized. Helicopters were dispatched to monitor the area until 1 a.m. The Sunset Strip shut down for several hours.

Anyone want to make a bet that this happens in Silver Spring?

Absolutely. I also heard once that someone found a crack needle in a McDonald's playplace, so lets shut down all McDonald's everywhere.
The absolute fear the 930 fanboys have of their precious Mecca having competition would be hilarious if it wasn't so pathetic.

Actually crack can be injected. Since it is a "base" it needs to be diluted with an acid, such as lemon juice or vinegar. Voila. Liquid crack.
Have fun, kids.

Srsly? LA is not Silver Spring.

indeed, i was wrong about that. i thought i had heard it all, apparently i need to spend more time with crackheads
getting back to the origin of this thread: fear mongering fail. i have no doubt that the new venue in SS will keep things under control.
as much as i want a reason to dislike HoB, this isn't it. HoBs are the strip-malls of live music - efficient but soulless. i'd much rather see a show at DAR than at a HoB.

i love the 930, best club in north america IMO, but i'd be happy for some competition... ideally, something of the same caliber and quality. there isn't enough room in DC for a dozen new clubs, so if we're going to get a new (and lone) competitor let's have it be a good one... not the mcdonalds of rock'n'roll.

Major fear mongering fail.

If somebody wants to compete with the 9:30 club, that's fair and square. Just let them do it on their own without county subsidy, just like Seth and Co bought the V St venue on their own and set up shop there.

The McDonald's of Rock & Roll... That sounds about right. Except, this isn't even about rock and roll... It's about McDollars.

Meanwhile, IMP continues to post losses every quarter, right?
-
Live Nation posts losses every quarter, because it's paying Madonna $150 mill and it keeps buying more venues. Meaning, in other places they have to actually PAY for venues, instead of getting them on a silver platter by a government executive that's either the stupidest or most of the take. Live Nation took in $4.7 BILLION last year, according to the Washington Post. I doubt I.M.P. posts and financial reports, since it's not a traded stock.

I'm all for competition...bring it on...that's how we beat The Bayou, Nation, Nissan, and whatever else they've tried to do with their own money
But taxpayer subsidy to help them them because they've failed otherwise...that's just wrong...and REAL wrong when they're using my Mont Co tax money on me to do it
let's just assume I'm the biggest capitalist pig in the world...that doesn't change what's wrong with this
take me out of it and then have the discussion about no RFP, changing liquor laws to suit this deal, ignoring Zoning Board decisions, $8 mil of taxpayer money at the expense of public services, all cost overruns resulting in 100% deductions from rent...while the same company is making a deal in DC to pay full market rate rent (which I have no objection to)
if there's a monopoly, it's only because we beat them fair & square, with zero help from anyone (well, maybe a few friends who invested early on)
level playing field is all I ask...the only argument against that seems to come from people jealous about our success, or that would like to go to concerts down the street from where they live (can't blame them for that)
so...today's challenge...try & have the discussion about the merits of that deal without knocking us

Before it was going to be a HoB it was suppose to be another Birchmere, but of course without the big lawyers and dollars of a franchise company like Clear Channel.
I agree, there's nothing wrong with another large music venue, but when you bend the rules, and make it taxpayers footing the bill, that's just completely wrong.
It's the same way I felt when Verizon Center was asking for some crazy large amount of DC taxpayers money to refurnish the venue, only to give the City Council their own suite. I don't recall them being the ones footing the bill, why can't taxpayers have access to THEIR suite THEY paid for?
