Lily is coming to see DC in February. Now that this is done we need Amy Winehouse to come!!!!
-
Am I the only one who has no idea who these people are?
-
No. And, considering who's shilling them, you probably don't need to.
-
lily allen?
-
Both Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse are getting occasional airplay on WOXY.com, and I really like Winehouse's "Rehab"...it just sounds like a song that's been around forever yet seems new and fresh. As for Lily...I don't get what the big deal is.
-
no idea. but i hear that the kids love them.
-
Haven't heard of Lily Allen? What, have you been living under a rock?
-
If by "under a rock" you mean "not watching MTV," then yes.
-
I don't watch MTV, but KEXP was playing the hell out of her maybe six months ago or so.
Does MTV really play any videos? I've never seen a video when flipping through MTV in the past 18 months that I've had cable.
-
I'd assume they would, considering they are sponsoring her tour.
-
MTV promotes a lifestyle, not music. I can't help but project this idea onto Lily Allen. I haven't heard her entire album, but the cuts i did hear seemed more like lifesytle music.
-
"Lifestyle" is the term Borders is now using for new age.
-
I think you have to make your own choice. MTV promotes but people decide. Just because MTV is supporting it doesn't matter. I knew about her long before MTV came into the picture. That is why God gave us brains and didn't make us zombies.
-
The words of a 21 year old rich British party girl don't really speak to me, but the music is catchy.
-
Freedom of choice
Is what you got
Freedom from choice
Is what you want
-
Bull930, You seem like a nice enough anglophile, is it not within your means to venture up the coast a few hours where you can have your overfill of all your favorites, can even catch TRL Live if I'm not mistaken that a) it still exits and b) it's still in NYC?
I saw Lily's lack luster showcase in NYC last year, as well as Amy's stellar performance at Joes Pub a little over a week ago. Sometimes you have to go to the mountain.
And I'm not sure if it was your intention but the way you've been beating this drum for months you come off sounding like a street teamer for both acts...not a crime if you are, but probably wasting your time on these boards.
And for the record I'll repeat you'll never see Amy Winehouse/Lily Allen grace the same stage outside of a festival, conference, or your turn table. Amy is a established, exceptionally talented artist, while Lily is a few months removed from decrypting her diary for her demos.
And though she'll probably outsell Amy by a mile, there's no correlation between her popularity and her talent level which is improving but far from professional. She's interesting but why the hell she's headlining the 930 is beyond me, besides of course SHE CAN because MTV said so. Amy should be playing the 930 on the 16th, where as there is perfectly good back room at the Black Cat for up and coming artists like Ms. Allen.

Street team this board, go to jail, it's the law!
-
bnyced0 - even if he did venture up to NYC - all those anglophile shows you are mentioning keep selling out. but have no fears - the fratellis added a second date to the mercury lounge. and maybe theres still lily allen tix available for the webster hall show. but bloc party is sold out.
this is from the bowery website.

this is meant as a serious question: bull930, can you/would you be allowed to get on a bus/train/plane to NYC for a concert?
-
I like my Brits in large doses, and there's always a nice complement at Noorderslag in January, NME Award Tours in February, SXSW in March, and the last gasp before the summer festivals...Indio in April. All of which will have/had an appearance by Amy W. with a bevy of others including the Pipettes who are also stellar.
What I want in the States are their albums at a reasonable time instead of having to drop 8 quid for the import when they're released, but I guess that still beats waiting 10 months for them to be in the $7.99 bin at best buy.
-
"even if he did venture up to NYC"
BULL930 is a he?
-
AS much as we pay for mortgages and rents, we chouldn't have to fly to NYC to see a concert. Everything should come to us.
-
i dont know if bull930 is a he or she. bad assumption probably.
-
First of all I just love good music. I love life instruments and singing. If I like an artist I will support them. I don't feel like going to NYC when I can stay in DC. I am a male and very proud of it. I am sorry if I am posting on an artist I like and not pleasing you. I also like Peaches, Otis Reeding, Prince, Micheal Jackson, so my taste are diverse. I am not just a zombie who goes with the flow. So stick that up your pipe in smoke it.
And when you talk about traveling, I went to see Kylie Minogue in Glasgow opening night. If I like the artist I will travel. I am a musically eclectic.
-
WaPo had a good article today on Lily Allen. I think foul-mouthed British party girls are kinda hot, so I'm naturally inclined to like her:

How did I contradict myself???? You need to get off the NyQuil and get sober.
-
is this thread really happening?

remarkable
-
bull: since i didn't get an answer to my previous question, lemme try this one: how old are you? just curious!
-
"I am a musically eclectic."
Are you a musician or do you mean your musical tastes are eclectic? Now I'm curious, where are you from, bull930?
-
I am old enough to drink and i like all types of music.
-
And I am from good old Washington DC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Lily Allen is sold out...hopefully bull930 got his ticket?
-
Anyone who hasn't heard of Lilly Allen better get out from under their rock because very soon we'll never hear of her ever again......13 minutes and counting!!
-
I did get my ticket!! Also bringing some people who have no idea who Lily Allen is! I brought my sis to see Peaches last year.
Can you believe someone is trying to make money off of Lily on craigslist....selling tickets for $50 to $100. Crazy, Crazy.
-
Anyone know about this new will call policy???
-
Anyone know about this new will call policy???
It's only for those 3 days next week. Chill.
-
Ok. Thanks. If anyone wants to crawl from out of a rock, Lily is on SNL.
-
She was so cute in that foofy black dress!

People trying to make money by selling tickets to sold-out shows at outrageous prices? I've never seen the like!
The way the music industry works never ceases to amaze me. A week or two ago I had never heard of Lily Allen. Now she's headlining a sold-out show at the 9:30, and I just heard her single on the "20 most popular songs of the week or some such" XM radio program at my local bowling alley last night. I thought it was quite terrible, I might add.
It's just incredible how some new band or artist can come out of nowhere with a debut album, get hyped like crazy by their major label and MTV and radio and whatnot, and suddenly become ridiculously popular overnight. Good lord, I hate that.
-
yeah, but where will those acts be in five years? ... or even three?
-
Haven't seen it yet.....had to work!!!!
-
I think you can never predict where an artist will be....who thought Madonna would still be here. I think you just have to see.
I remember when Sean Lennon came out....haven't really heard from him.
-
While Lily Allen has come out of nowhere it seems, she did break out in the UK this past year becoming a huge pop star, and that makes it easier to digest this quick rise in the US.
-
i bought into the hype and bought her cd today too. the cd is pretty good; i like her videos. her performance on snl tonight was kinda boring. i dont know if id pay those ridiculous craigslist prices or even $15-20 to see her just stand around. i must say though, i find her really cute, and that there is definitely something alluring about her. yet at the same time i could see her being annoying as hell.
-
Very very funny and true. Songs are good but sometimes she soes go a bit too far. I think $15 is a good price. When I went to see Peaches she was $20 but I would have paid more. You have to take into account that she is a UK artist that has blown up and this is one of like 8 gigs she is playing. Then you have to add that MTV is behind it and the intimate setting that is the 9:30 club. I really like going there from time to time. Looks like a hole in the wall on the outside but cool inside. She sings live and will have a live band too. It is just sad people are trying to make a quick buck but you have to just SMILE because this is what happens in the good WDC.
-
no offense to anyone, but the 9:30 club isn't "Intimate". Intimate is a venue that's less than 300 people... since we'll go for "bandwagon" bands I saw Something Corporate playing an open mic night to 15 people and 8 months later they were headlining Warped Tour. (soundboard from that = <3 )
my bf just mentioned to me he's listening to her, which is why i had to comment on the ludicrousness of an MTV show being "Intimate" in a 1000 person venue. No. Pink Floyd at the 9:30 club would be intimate. Lily Allen selling it out is just corporate.
and I'll add I've done the street team thing for 9 years, and I admit when TRL came out my company mass shill called for bands like Pink and The Calling, but when you got paid $10 a day to do it, you would too.
-
I love her cute little upturned nose!
-
i love how people like bull930 keep finding their way to this little corner of the internet, keeps things entertaining
-
I think you can never predict where an artist will be....who thought Madonna would still be here. I think you just have to see.
i'd really rather that madonna NOT be around. i absolutely loathe her.
-
didn't blondie do this 30 yrs ago?
-
I love her cute little upturned nose!
it's called a deviated septum...
-
I was sort of joking when I said intimate. I mean it is totally different then going to Verizon Center. 9:30 has good sound so all in all it will be a good show. Who on the forum is even going to the show????
-

Sorry, but something about that doesn't make sense to me. In my opinion, a venue is either intimate or it's not, pretty much depending entirely on its size. Whether a venue is intimate or not doesn't change depending on who's playing there. First you say that a venue is intimate if it's less than 300 people, then you say that the 9:30 would be intimate if Pink Floyd played there. That's just contradictory and doesn't make any sense.
-
Baby Spice meets Matisyahu.
-
An example is Pink, she came in summer of 06 to 930 and then she was just here on Friday. 930 was definitely more intimate because it was smaller and sound was better. You could probably she her pimples and such. The same goes for Justin when he played there. There is a difference between 1,000 and over 10,000. My whole point is you'll actually be able to see her with your naked eye and see her pimples or whatever she has.
-
In answer to your question in the FAQ section, I believe Aaron LaCrate is openning for Lily Allen
-
Baby Spice meets Matisyahu.
Oh, good. So she'll definitely be gone tomorrow.
-
Since when did Lily Allen "come out of nowhere"? Plenty of people were talking about her on this board six months ago. That includes me, a dopey 39 year old from Springfield, and Bagster, an Escalade driving 38? year old.
-
Oh. The female James Blunt?
-
No, the British No Doubt.
-
Since when did Lily Allen "come out of nowhere"?
She did. She was on no label and posted demos on myspace and within 3 months had a 6-time #1 in the UK. That's coming out of nowhere. Obviously, her US ascension is not.
-
Who on the forum is even going to the show????
I am.
And for the "who is Lily Allen a cross between" discussion, it's Lady Soverign and Nelly Furtado.
-
I will see ya there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Anyone know where her album charted in the US?????
-
I will see ya there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great! I'll be the guy with the huge beard and leather jacket. I'll buy you a drink, mate!
-
I will be the tall African American!!!!
-
does a trail of exclamation marks follow you in real life, too?
-
When I made the James Blunt reference, I meant more in regard to her "coming out of nowhere" and selling out shows, staying power? / one hit wonder, etc...
-
Ah, that makes sense. Please forgive our (or mine at least) lack of reading comprehension!
-
Can we get back to Amy Winehouse?
Looking at her web site, she's done with
the US as far as that's concerned. Anyone
know if she's planning on coming back over
and maybe hitting our little town?
p.s. I have Lily tickets. Just for fun
-
I bought Amy Winehouse's debute import cd for 25 cents at Tower.
-
And I have to say the Amy Winehouse debut is much better than the Lily Allen debut.
-
I haven't heard her music, but something about Amy Winehouse seems so fake and manufactured. All I read about is how much weight she lost and how self-destructive she is and how she's three whiskeys away from drinking herself to death. Two years ago she was a relatively normal-looking pop singer, and now all of a sudden she's copping an Elvira DiFranco look. It feels like she saw all the press that Pete Doherty was getting and thought, I need to re-do my image.
-
There's a lengthy article on Amy Winehouse in today's Post:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/06/AR2007020601885.html (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/06/AR2007020601885.html)

Something about any musician getting any press is fake and manufactured.

I would try listening to the music. But I'm curious how you got "fake and manufactured" out of what you read of her seemingly self-destructive tendencies, who's faking and who's manufacturing here?
Are those categorizations you've made meant to be negative, or merely objective?
I guess I'm trying to understand whether you're providing the reason for why you're not listening to her, or pointing out to others why they shouldn't?
The lyrics from her latest release go a long way in explaining part of the source of her ill fated ways, might want to give it chance...acusing anyone of mimicking Pete Doherty is pretty malicious and his ability to live off of Libertine royalties is quickly diminishing so his behavior has led to anything but fame and riches, more like infamy and incarceration.
-

Merely objective. I have nothing against her, and as I said, I haven't heard her music. But your head is in the sand if you think that the image of "elegantly wasted, barely teetering on the brink of destruction" hasn't been done to death since the Strokes hit it big, and that many, many bands are trying to use that template to make it big. And the fact that she's copped this image so recently makes me cynical about how genuine it is.
Every interview I've read has included lots of quotes from her on how wasted she gets, how "they" keep telling her to stop drinking, but dammit she's just gonna keep being a violent drunk. Do you think Amy was pissed that the first sentence in her Post profile is about her drinking habits?
I also am suspect of anyone who puts so much energy into their looks, and does it in such a cliche way, which she absolutely does. I have no problems with sporting a beehive, tattoos, piercings, and super-clingy clothes that show off that heroin chic, newly won bod. But don't try and say that it's original or unique. It's a schtick, and if her music is that good, I hope it works for her.
I guess I'm trying to understand whether you're providing the reason for why you're not listening to her, or pointing out to others why they shouldn't?
It's a message board for people to post opinions. We have just done as such.
-
I guess my head must be in the sand. I wasn't aware of the image thing you are talking about. When has a certain element of rockers NOT been given to self-destruction? Did Jimi Hendrix, Janis Jopin, Keith Moon, and Kurt Cobain's deaths all image driven as well? To me, the choice to indulge in self-destructive behavior is more stupid than trying to cultivate an image of any sort.
I guess I don't really pay attention to the stories behind the performers. When it comes to music publications, I usually skip by the performer profiles, and just read the album reviews.
Relax: Merely objective. I have nothing against her, and as I said, I haven't heard her music. Why of course silly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I think every act is manufactured in some way. Lily's album went to #20 with 34,000 copies sold. Amy's album will be out in March so she will probably be in the States soon, hopefully at 930.
-
Perez Hilton loves Amy Winehouse (http://perezhilton.com/topics/amy_winehouse/reason_378_we_love_amy_winehouse_20070130.php)
<img src="http://perezhilton.com/amyeat.jpg" alt=" - " />
Says Wino : "My drinking replaced weed. I still have a problem. I have had a problem with drink but I haven't had a drink in a few days. The problem isn't exaggerated. I'm a terrible drunk. I don't know where that comes from - boredom?"
And, about her new super skinny frame she says, "I'd get up, smoke two big spliffs then think I should eat something so I'd have a fry-up. Then I wouldn't eat anything all day. Then I'd eat pasta at two in the morning. I can't smoke now because my energy crashes. I'm a gym girl. I'm not a lazy person anymore. I'd train every day if I had the chance."
-
Based on those pictures, she should have stuck with weed.
-
She looks better before with some curves!!!!!!!!!
-
Neither.
-
Then, please.

so yes - she will be here on 3/13 to be exact. NYC isnt that far away, as was also said, but the show is sold out so really doesnt matter.

Well I wrote this on 1/10/07:

Lily is moving to LA in February to promote the US release of "Alright Still", so expect to see and hear a lot more from her in the near future. Amy's album drops in March, so same goes for her.
-------------------------------------------------
So ... ne, ne, ne, ne , neh!
-
i would rather see the pipettes over both of them.
-
I meant possibly coming to DC not America. You never know though.
-
Saw Lily Allen rockin' Webster Hall last night, she was on top of her game, great show. A one hour set plus two song encore. Lookin' forward to doin' it all again on Friday night!
-
Good good! Was it live???? Also who opened for her there! Who is going to the show on Friday?????
-

Is anybody as baffled by this question as I?
-
yup, i for one. i'm generally trying to get a handle on bull930, so far no success. i'm sure he had a legitimate question in mind, but not being able to translate it into the written word yielded this present confusion.
then again, maybe it's my ignorance... does she do dj sets sometimes?
-
I think, perhaps, he is asking whether she sang over a tape of her background music (a la most rappers), or if she had a backing band.
-
The show was fantastic, absolutely live, full band, horn section, lead guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and Lily's new toy ... an upright electronic sound machine gizmo she had great fun playing with throughout the show!
Some nice song choices to lengthen her set and one or two nice surprises I won't disclose here. Matisyahu was boppin' away on the balcony right in front of the stage for the entire show!
When I saw one of her shows last October there was an opening band, then a kick ass dj who really got the crowd going, and then Lily. This time around there was no opening band, just a pretty lame dj who didn't really do much for me or the rest of the crowd. Very surprising when you consider the tour is sponsored by MTV.
Lily Allen more than makes up for this, her set is fantastic ... Enjoy!
-
Thank you for answering my question...it was not hard to understand if you actually read and write English. Are you even going to the show sweetcell???? You are a big phat hater.....i wonder if you are made of testosterone or estrogen???? Well the show is 4 days away!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who is going to buy me a drink??????
-
calm down, bull930...
-
heh, what joe said. i'm not a hater - i am completely ambivalent about lily and amy, having heard in passing only a song or two from each. i am, however, intrigued by you bully. might be more precise to say "entertained" :) i believe you've asked about my gender - i'm a guy. and no, i'm not going to the lily show, too busy this week. have fun though and do tell us about it afterwards. i'm sure you'll provide us with an insightful review.
-
Is Lily Allen this years Matisyahu?
-
Perhaps you missed it when I said:
Baby Spice meets Matisyahu.
-
No hate to anyone just had to get my point across.....i am interested in who is actually going to the show so I can say hello!!!!!
-
Just returned from her show at the TLA in Philly. I have to say I was skeptial going in, but the show really was fantastic. I realize that she may be completely forgotten about by June, but what the hell, if you can go to a show enjoy the music, and have fun who cares. Those of you going friday will be impressed.
-
$15....$15.....how much did you pay......$15...$15....I am A.OK.........hope you didn't pay more than $15.......$15.....$15.....Lily will be here on the 16th.........

The very talented Mark Ronson was the DJ for that show in October. And damn, was he incredible! Now Im thinking maybe I should have seen her this time around, but I'm already flat broke with all the shows going on in NYC.
-
He is the man behind both Lily and Amy!!!!
-
Umm, it seems like quite a few of you haven't heard Amy Winehouse's music, yet you're full of opinions about her. Let's not mix words -- Amy Winehouse is more talented than Lily Allen, has a better voice, but unfortunately, won't sell as well. (Kinda like Nikka Costa - shitload of talent, should sell well, no promotion.) IF you want to hear Amy's music without waiting for the U.S. release, you can buy it for about $15 at www.cd-wow.com (http://www.cd-wow.com) (shipping takes about a week). I hope Amy comes to DC - 9:30 or Black Cat, maybe? Fingers crossed!

You seem to have missed my point. I was implying that considering the state of your posts, you're in no position to criticize anyone else's English.
Besides, they had a legitimate point. Your question made no sense the way you asked it.
And no, I'm not going to the show. I've heard one song by Lily Allen, and it almost made my ears bleed.
-
I finally heard Amy Winehouse last night. The song I heard sounded like a carbon copy of Fiona Apple. I'm not saying that's a bad sound.
-
Like Fiona Apple? You've go to be kidding. She's nothing like Fiona Apple. Which is a good thing. How does she sound like Fiona Apple?
-
Definitely doesn't sound like Fiona.
I just saw her picture. Is she a transsexual or did a plague land on her face? Bull930? What ya think?
-
She's Jewish.
-
You don't hear any Fiona Apple? I hear it in the pounding chords on the piano, deeper voice (neither are sopranos) and the tormented/put-up-on lyrics. Again, I just heard the one song but that was the vibe that came through.
-
Ha, Ha....very funny. Amy doesn't sound like Fiona at all. You could play both at the same time and clearly see the difference. I also think at first Amy can look like a tranny but when you look close you can tell. When I first saw her on youtube someone posted she looked like the Arquette brother who dress up like a girl. I love both artist but think you can clearly tell the differences by not only voice but also looks.
Tomorrow I am going to put a roll call out for the show on Friday!!!!!
-
I have an extra Lily Allen ticket, if anyone is looking.
-
For how much???? A trillion dollars!
-
Of course not -- if you're a board regular, face value my friend.

While those are all valid points, they're also all general points that could apply to 1/3 to 1/2 of all female solo singer-songwriter type artists.

Are those pictures for real? She looks like crap. I think I need to go back to page one - I still don't get the fuss over these two and how they are related...
-
Hoya don't hate....
-
Which one of these two is farther into their allotted 15 minutes?
-
I think Amy Winehouse will stick. She's more talented and has a much better voice. Lily Allen is cutesie and all, but she's more likely the flash in the pan.
Why do you think either of them only has 15 minutes? Norah Jones seems to be sticking around just fine.
-
Steny, do you really think Amy Winehouse is singing?
-
bags, please don't encourage him/her/it
Hey, not encouraging, passing along real info. And, I'm living by it -- am selling three tickets to board folks at face.
It's all ticket karman, my friends.

Joe, I'm not sure what you mean.
-
Of course she is....she is laughing in the middle.

Steny, she sounds like she's reciting words in a soulful way...

Bull, the Highline Ballroom seems to be a new place opening in NYC on May 1st, one block west of Hiro Ballroom on W16th between 9th/10th. Can't find any ticket info yet.
That email address you're looking for is 'amywinehouse@justdropmealineandillplayagiginyourtownrightaway.com'!
Thanks for the tour date link Jack.

If you do let me find out.

She's on MTV and VH1 so she will probably stop by.

If either Lilly or Amy get shot outside their NY apartments I don't think the cops will have to look much further than this board for their suspect!!!!

I was skeptical about this whole Amy thing, but I saw her on Letterman last night...Pretty, pretty, pretty good. I can't get song out of my head. It really reminds me on the Ronettes.
-
I just bought the Amy Winehouse album at...ummm...a store that was offering it for $7.99. It doesn't have that new cover (which I prefer) but the Jennifer-Beals-in-"Flashdance" UK one. I haven't opened it yet.
According to the back of the CD, "Addicted" isn't on it but then neither are "You Know I'm No Good - (featuring Ghostface Killah)" and "Love Is A Losing Game - (Acoustic Demo)."
Maybe there are two different US versions.
Brian
-
the "You Know I'm No Good - (featuring Ghostface Killah)" is a hidden track and pretty useless inclusion...
So my reaction based on a couple listen is the Alice Smith record is way better and it sounds like the comeback effort of a once popular singer who was down and out more than a second effort. It sounds like Soul music as created on a computer instead of live in a studio. Most of the backing tracks are stiff with the rhythm section plodding along. Amy has a limited vocal range not unlike the singer in the Detroit Cobras, but Rachel Nagy has more passion in her delivery. To me it's all a bit Lite FM and will stick with Alice Smith, Brazilian Girls and the Detroit Cobras.

She's to come to 930!
She's been on national TV!!!
When she gonna get booked????

Who got a ticket to the Highline Ballroom??? I need one for the 9th.

UK vocalist Amy Winehouse debuts at No. 7 with her sophomore album Back To Black. The album, which features production from Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, sold 50,000 copies in its first week.
