Title: Police to open Grammys
Post by: beetsnotbeats on January 30, 2007, 04:39:00 pm
From CNN: (http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Music/01/30/grammys.police.reut/index.html)

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- The Police will reunite to open the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on February 11, The Recording Academy said on Tuesday, fueling speculation that the hit 1980s British band is planning a reunion tour.

The five-time Grammy-winning band, led by frontman Sting, with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers, quietly split up within a couple of years of the 1983 "Synchronicity" album and was last seen playing together in 2003 to commemorate their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The band, known for such hits as "Roxanne," "Message in a Bottle" and "Every Breath You Take," has never performed at the annual telecast for the music industry's most prestigious awards that are given by The Recording Academy.

"The Police join a stellar list of past Grammy Awards opening acts, which includes reunions and once-in-a-lifetime performances," said a statement from the academy.

Members of The Police have so far refused to confirm rumors that the band is planning to reunite in 2007 for dates in Britain and the United States, with this year marking the 30th anniversary of the release of "Roxanne."

Hopefully big enough that they'd have to cancel the rest of the show.

It'll be just like the VIBE awards!

That seals the deal! Yet another year that I won't bother to watch the Grammys. Unless...there is sure to be a good fight and Sting gets his mug smashed to an ugly pulp.

I bet it will be just like the Eagles reuniion...they will stay in seperate hotels, arrive at the venue in seperate limo's. Perform with absolutely no interaction between them, and leave in their seperate limos back to their seperate hotels.

Washington, D.C.: The Police at the Grammy's...

 Silly publicity stunt?

 or

Smoothing of tensions between Sting and Stewart Copeland and the resurection of the best band from the 80s?

I know Coachella and a tour are supposedly in the works, but I won't believe it until I see it.

 J. Freedom du Lac: Not sure what the motivating forces were but I'm glad they're coming back. And they hardly intend this to be a one-and-done deal. They're absolutely planning to tour this summer. Promoters are negotiating dates as we speak.

Glad to know I can watch the first five minutes of the grammys, then change the channel or listen to music or just stare at the walls rather than watch the rest of the broadcast!

Police a Go Go
 From Pollstar

While a reunion performance by The Police at the Grammy Awards in L.A. February 11 is big news, Pollstar has learned that the really big story will come the next day.
The band will hold a morning press conference February 12 at L.A.'s famed Whisky a Go Go, where they will announce what is being called "really big news" and will also perform a few songs.

I've never felt the love for the Police. I can't stand Stink, and Stewart Copeland is a terrible drummer for that band (he overplays something terrible). I got nothing against Andy Summers though, and he's always seemed like a nice man. So good for him.

My wife thought Sting looked good for an old guy. I thought the performance was mediocre.

I heard today that The Police tried to book M&T Stadium in Baltimore for a show but the stadium officials decided they didn't want them there. From what I could tell, it had nothing to do with the band, per se, but concerts in general.

There's no way in Hell that I would ever consider going to that show but, putting my personal preferences aside, that really sucks for their Baltimore fans. Especially when you consider how many of the area people's tax dollars have paid for that place even though the citizens voted against the thing even being built.       I could understand if it were during football season but the next season is a long way off. On top of it all, it's not like there are really any other arena sized venues in the Greater Baltimore area for them to go to.

This time, we can't blame the band or the promoter for not trying.

But the best date for the group was Aug. 4, the day the Ravens plan to scrimmage the Washington Redskins.
so that means FedEx field will be available!  Not that football stadiums make for great concert venues, but if they insist on it... hey seth...

FedEx field is useless as a concert venue.

and M&T is any better?

actually, i'm wondering if gore's Live Earth thingy might prevent them from playing DC (either contractually or economically).

The Ravens are all for concerts at M&T Bank, since they make money off of them. The thing is Ravens football comes first there. I know this because I use to work there. Hopefully something can be worked out there. Fedex is not a good option, due to working with â??themâ?ť is a pain and more trouble then it is worth.

The locals are pissed off about this. Apparently, there is some kind of meeting tomorrow night (I think) in Federal Hill (no idea where) regarding petitioning some big wig about making this happen at M&T.

I'm hoping that even if they can't get The Police gig going, that this makes it very evident to those in power and with the money that Baltimore wants some big concerts too. This could all work out as a plus in the long run regardless of the outcome for this particular show.

Funny thing is, I can't stand arena/stadium shows but as a music lover who is so keenly aware of how often Baltimore is skipped over, I can fully support everyone's efforts in this cause.

I don't even want to begin wondering what Danny Boy would charge to use Fed Ex.

FedEx is just too big.  Its much more of a monstrosity than M&T or any other stadium I've ever been to.  RFK on the other hand used to be a decent venue for huge shows (if you had decent seats).

15 million watched….total US population 347 million…so about 6% watched

In 1984 51 million watched. Total US population 235 million so about 16% watched

Those numbers actually compute to 4.3% and 21.7%, respectively.
