Topped by Pretty Ricky, of course.
Oh, and by the way, indie is the new mainstream.
-
I don't know why this would surprise anyone seeing how the CD is EVERYWHERE including on prominent displays at Target, Best Buy and...Starbucks.
-
Oh, and by the way, rhett is the new broken record.
-
i am surprised by this. i mean, i knew they were popular, but #2? they undoubtedly fall to #157 next week.
i guess i dont hang out at Target, Starbucks and Best Buy enough....
i'm more of a JCPenney, Dunkin Donuts, Circuit City kinda guy!
-
I go to Starbucks for the CDs.
-
Sellouts?!!!
I thought they sold out after their first album.
-
"All you know about me is what I've sold you,
Dumb fuck.
I sold out long before you ever even heard my name.
I sold my soul to make a record,
Dip shit,

Honestly, we all thought they were completely over-rated from the get-go, right? Who's with me?
-
for the record, i always thought they were pretty fucking annoying.
kinda like Belle and sebastian.
-
they've made it big now - of course we've always hated them! i'm insulted you'd think otherwise.
<note to self: need to change previous "album of the year" lists...>
-

The other thread about the album would say otherwise.
-
I don't care if they go to #2...more power to them. I still think they're a great band. But I think that once the record settles, the hype will subside and they can just get back to normal. Didn't Kid A go to #1?
-
Yeah, but Radiohead has never been an indie band.
-
Really? What are they? Brit-pop? I always kind of thought they were a British rock band that somehow went into indie-type territory. LP's like Kid A and Hail to the Thief aren't really what you could call commercial.
-
Didn't Kid A go to #1?
Yes. Amnesiac opened at #2, HTTT at #3.
I've never thought of Radiohead as an "indie" band, although they are quite popular with the "indie scene." I'd label them "alternative" pre-Kid A, "experimental" from then on.
-
Didn't they sell out when Garden State used their tunes for its soundtrack?
Since we're sharing our opinons, I liked one of the Garden State tunes. I watched them on ACL and the other songs did nothing for me.
-

If you're going to argue being on a soundtrack is 'selling out,' then they 'sold out' long before that when they let McDonald's use New Slang in a commercial for 25k.

This was one I bought when it was on sale on Target last nite. I wanted to get this cd because The Shin's song The New Slang was a very good Rock song. I dont know if you listeners here have been paying close attention on song2 on this album there is Banjo! That is not Rock. Also song5 ( i think) is Disco! Not what I wanted from a good Rock band. I would return this cd but I threw it out the van window on hearing these songs. I could not find it when I went back, there were too many cars on the road. I would say: Beware of The Shins, they are No Longer Rock.
-
I would call Radiohead music for the perpetually adolescent.

Radiohead has never been indie 'cause they have always been on a major label. However, because their sound does not sound mainstream, people confuse them as an indie band...
-
lets not have the "does indie mean an independant label only? or is indie a genre of music" conversation yet again.
-
Y'all better watch it knocking The Shins too much. You know damn full well that when they play DC, almost every single one of you will bust your ass to make sure you get tickets to their show. Then GGW will pull one of his little masterful tricks and extract your post and quote it right next to your plea for those tickets you got shut out of or gloat about getting.
Personally, I could take them or leave them so I'm very thankful that I won't have that headache to deal with. In any event, it's always nice to see that a halfway decent band is getting the press and sales instead of some crap like Britney Spears or whatever artificial flavor of the day. (Sorry, Smackie. :p )
-
I didn't know McD's used New Slang for their jingle. Honestly, the previous thread about Wincing almost inspired me to check it out.
I thought I would dig The Shins, but again, the Austin City Limits apperance didn't light my fire for them. Someday maybe.
-
Good for them. It's not easy being a rockstar.
-
With cd sales plummeting - Debuting @ #2 ain't what it used to be. Heck - it's hardly even an accomplishment anymore. Especially when you release your record during the January deadzone.
So...in summary: They really didn't sell out. All their fans just bought the record.
-
so like, what we can really say about the shins, is that their fans are old and still buy cds.
