i'm curious to know your thoughts about the state theatre. sound quality? visibility? shows let out before metro stops running? i know its only a couple miles from a metro station. easy to get a cab there and back?
hothouse flowers are there in a couple weeks but i've never seen a show there. i'm also tossing around that zombie/love show after you all raved about love at the birchmere last fall. (i'm sure mankie is the only who would even be interested in seeing hothouse flowers since he's such a throwback fan of the 80's.!)

Cool place to see a show, but they book so few good ones. Sound is good, bars are well located. They might serve food too. Cool upstairs balcony to chill if it gets to much on the ground. They have lots of chairs and tables though, more people sit than stand up front. Unless its a dancy show. Since they have so many jam bands in there, they likely have a lot of activity on the dance floor with all the hippies.

great place to see a show but parking is very tight. food is not very good. otherwise a fine venue.

Well, I'm interested in both Hothouse Flowers and the Love show. In fact, due to the raves, I've ordered "Forever Changes" which should arrive any day.
I've also never been there....we'll see. If I go, Lily, I may be able to give you a ride, or at least help you get to the metro if my car's crowded...

Hey, Bags and Lily: It draws a totally different crowd than 930... MUCH younger and perhaps a bit less mature about sharing space with those older/not ethnicly compatible with the majority It's the only concert I've ever been to in my life where a posse of girlfriends behind me decided to push me out of the way - and told me so - then stuck a huge wad of chewing gum in my hair when I wouldn't move. Hope more people like you start going cause it's a great space but in need of major repairs (i.e., revenue/customers) - and I hope you don't share my experience.

Hmmm, Suki, I hope I don't share your experience either! I will say, though, that because the bands I'm going to see are basically "geezer" bands, I'd expect the crowd to be a bit calmer (and older). Also, I don't need to be real close for either band. I will defer to my needy younger sistahs.

I saw Jimmy Cliff at the State Theatre. No girl posses or chewing gum. I also saw Dark Star Orchestra there. I'm pretty sure I saw Redsock at that show.
It's a good place to see a show. A little suburban for sure, but no complaints.

I saw Jupiter Coyote there, no comments needed, was a decent venue, a bit too many tables, although at the time I was mostly pissed that I couldn't smoke

The people working the door look like they also volunteer for the PTA and work the gate at the local high school football games. You have to get a wristband and go outside if you smoke. For the Jimmy Cliff show, there were too many tables and it looked like a dinner theater.
These aren't things that ruin a good show in any way. Just makes it feel a little different.

The State Theater is one of my favorite venues in the area, and I don't know what that guy is complaining about the staff. I've worked there doing promo for one of the stations in town and they are all very nice and non geezer like (since when is 25 and younger geezer like?) I agree that they could use some better bands, or atleast, more appealing bands, but the State really is a great venue. I wish they would book the Polyphonic Spree sometime. This would be the ideal band for that venue.

Wait a minute....
I was buying into everything you just said until I got to the comment about you wishing that the Polyphonic Spree would play there and it being the ideal venue for them.
That just blew your whole stance and supported what GGW had said above. :roll:
