Clavius Productions presents arguably the best live band on the planet right now, the over-the-top, fuzzed-out, wild-eyed Blue Cheer-esque riffage of DMBQ:
Tuesday, October 21
Velvet Lounge
915 U St NW WDC
http://www.velvetloungedc.com (http://www.velvetloungedc.com)
202-462-3213
$12, doors at 9pm, 18+!
DMBQ (Estrus, from Japan)
Pit Er Pat (Thrill Jockey, from Chicago)
Awesome Color (Ecstatic Peace, from NYC)
-
I'm there.
What I've heard of the new Pit Er Pat is pretty good.
-
if work isn't too stupid on tuesday, i'm there too. i need another DMQB fix to up my indie cred :p
with two openers, what are the chances this show will be over by midnight? not that the VL is known to sticking to any semblance of a schedule... alternately, anyone wanna share a cab back to bethesda after the show, or can offer me a ride?
-
I think the earliest I've ever left the Velvet after a show with three acts was 12:45.
The latest was about 2. On a monday night.
Edit: That one actually had four acts now that I think about it.
-
we've had some shows end by midnight. it all depends on how many bands are on the bill, if the bands show up on time, if soundcheck goes well, if breakdowns and changeovers go smooth, etc. there are a lot of variables, in a small club with a minimal staff, that dictate how efficiently a show runs.
this show won't run too late. i'm guessing it'll be over by 12:30. there will be a lot of people there and we are soundchecking earlier than usual, so i really hope to start at 9:30 and get DMBQ on by 11:30. they will definitely be on before midnight.
-
i'll be seeing dmbq and monotonix in baltimore since monday with be more convenient for me..... but.. i'm having doubts the baltimore crowd will deliver since rainbow rock is all the rage in charm city now a days.
so... maybe?
-
dmbq and monotonix together is retarded. pit er pat and awesome color are good openers for dmbq, too. both of these shows will deliver high-quality entertainment.
fucking rainbow rock...that shit's on its 14th minute.
-
hope to make it after the New Year show at DC9.
-
Much as it kills me, I have to miss them this time. Just can't make it work for a variety of reasons. I'm sure it will be positively sick.

Tell me about it. This is not a sacrifice made lightly.
Sweetcell, sincere congratulations on the engagement. But this is what happens my man. (At least when the wife starts spittin' out trophies)
-
Congrats, Sweetcell!

I'm hoping to make this, but if my Monday is any indication, this work week will not be show-conducive.
-
That Ottobar show was pretty insane. Way too much nudity but just enough chaos.
-
dmbq were on point last night. the lead singer catapulted into the crowd and everyone parted pretty much as if it were the red sea. hope his head/back is okay for tonight's show.
-
working hardcore on my midterm essay so i can potentially make it out tonight. hopefully will get off work tomorrow morning aswell.
-
glad to see some interest here, but there should be more. c'mon people, fuzz riffs, fire, and nudity!
-
so, anyone headed back to/through/towards bethesda after the show?
-
no one miss this show if you have no excuse! NO ONE!
-
No one should miss the NEW YEAR show tonite at DC9.

Come on dude.
You've been around here long enough to know that plugging a dc9 show in a snailhook thread is a fucking aggregious 930 board faux pas.
Oh and come to DMBQ afterwards so Sweetcell can get a ride home.
-
you can make it to both shows...The New Year are awesome dude. They play at 10 pm! The Uglysuit (opener) are great as well.
There is a chance I'll make it to the DMBQ show...
P.S. I didn't give you a hard time with your Lewis Black show....LOL. :D You going to Gallagher too???
-
Lewis Black's brilliant.
I want to see Awesome Color and Pit Er Pat.
Awesome Color impressed me when they opened for Dino Jr. and the new Pit Er Pat album is all sorts of great as I mentioned earlier.
-
So that was ridiculous.
Hype = lived up to and exceeded.
-
what time did they hit the stage? Pit Er Pat were still playing at midnight when I stopped by the venue after the New Year show...
-
12:20-ish?
They were done by 1:05.
-
That's what I remember from the times I've seen them before, they don't play long. Which has its merit -- I'd rather be left wanting than checking the clock. But man, I've really been left wanting.
Sorry to have missed it, but I've got a sick grumpy wife, a 4-year-old who has just discovered the wonderful world of nightmares, and a 6-month-old who wakes up laughing, chirping and happy to be alive every hour and a half.
-
They're sooo cute during the first few months. They are awake at night, eat a lot, and poop a lot though... :( :p
I know this because I take care of my friend's baby nowadays..his wife is CRAZY. I think she's threatened by the baby. LOL

Amazing how much this simple post immortalizes the path of life through time.
-
easily one of the best shows of the year.
and wanderlust, i love the new year. saw 'em in philly at JB's two weeks ago, and they were fantastic as always. i wish i could have booked them at the velvet lounge. still...nothing trumps DMBQ, unless you just don't care for fuzz riffs and entertainment. i suppose if you're looking for emotional catharsis, the new year is the way to go.
also, fuck dc9 ;)

Meant to but didn't get a chance to ask you what you thought of the MBV shows last night. I ended up making it to the second night of Roseland and still can't come up with the right words to sum up that transcendental experience.
-
Because of the staggered set times, I was able to catch both New Year and DMBQ. Thanks to Snailhook and Wanderlust for the chastising recommendations.
New Year were solid. Full-bodied like the Brooklyn Chocolate Stout I was drinking...and appropriate to the dropping DC temperatures.
DMBQ was full on. The Japanese are taking our ideas and making them better again...just like auto industry.

they've been doing this, musically, since the late '60s (i.e., the jacks, flower travelin' band, speed glue & shinki, samurai, far out, kan mikami, karou abe).

those MBV shows were everything i waited for for 15 years. next time i see you, i'll give a detailed report, but here i'll just say that those two shows were indeed transcendental and emotionally/physically moving. they just reaffirmed my love for that band.
-
Glad you went and consider yourself lucky. The New Year don't tour that much in the States it seems...2004 was the last time they played DC!

it's not my favorite venue, but I've seen so many good shows there...it's better than Red and Black for sure.

getting dragged through rusty nails in better than the red and the black, so that's not saying much.
how was attendance at dc9? last time the new year played the black cat, i would say there was maybe 30 people there.
-
i'd say the same amount of people were there...
did they attract more than 30 people at Johnny Brenda's? Not sure about the scene in Philly...quite tempting to come up there to see Delta Spirit tomorrow... :D
-
they drew a little over 40, but they were also competing with phillies/dodgers game 1, which is a big deal around here. everyone is into sports here.
delta spirit is almost half sold-out tonight, should be a good one. we'll have plenty of great shows coming up here that you might wanna travel for (close to confirming the feelies, swirlies, among others).
-
I was considering APTBS tomorrow but that's not happening.

snailie, do you have a website or a mailing list where you publish this info? getting to philly is relatively easy for me, on weekends, so i wouldn't mind staying on top of what's on offer.
-
keep us posted on some of the shows your booking in philly.
-
The JB's site?
-
i'm booking johnny brenda's now, but since it is a larger venue, i'll be booking some stuff i don't really care about sometimes. still, i'm aiming to keep it 80% quality or higher. JB's has a mailing list, which i think you can sign up for on our website. coming up, we have jay reatard, dungen, pattern is movement, made out of babies, king khan & bbq, and possibly clockcleaner, the feelies, the swirlies, acid mothers temple, black lips, stinking lizaveta.
for the underground/experimental/noise/psych shows -- the kind i've been doing in dc for years -- there are dozens of others in philly who are doing it, so the volume of shows i book will decrease. i'll still do occasional smaller shows at venues like kung fu necktie (which just opened up), brickbat books (for fingerpicking, folk, japanese psych, drone), and gojjo (for free jazz).
-
I'd love to see Clockcleaner again.
