going?
other comments?
-
They were great in Austin last weekend and I look forward to seeing them play much longer set.
And now for the question that everyone askswhat are the chances of this selling out? I haven't had a chance to make it down to the box office yet.
-
will there still be tickets at the door? i am debating going, which usually means no :o
-
according to the FAQ's there will be tickets available tomorrow.
-
I'm playing it by ear...if my HH is over, I may head to the club and assume there will be tickets.
-
I'm there.
I think it will sell out or come very close. It's a Friday night - the show @ the BC last year had a nice size crowd on a school night - & the buzz around them is greater than ever.
The show I just saw here in Pittsburgh would rank as one of their best for me (prob seen 15 times). Hopefully it's an indication of what Friday night will be like.
Anyone who doesn't go to this because they think they don't like country music is doing themselves a huge disservice. I think you'll miss one of the best rock shows of the year if you don't go. I defy anyone to listen to Lookout Mountain on the Dirty South & then argue that they are a country band.
Even if you think they aren't your thing, I'd recommend that you check them out. Seeing is believing.
-
Honestly, I don't think I've ever heard a DBT song before. R they suck?
-
Enjoyed the show at Black Cat but I really think they play too long. I lose interest in most all bands after 2 hours.
-
True for me too, unless it's a band where I have all the albums and know all the songs. And now that I have the last 4 DBT albums (I only had one at the Black Cat show), I'm ready for the long shows.

From the City Paper's "City Lights"; By David Dunlap JR.
"My little brother, bless his felonious, curly-headed soul, owns some bad music.
Still, despite his lack of discretion, our common blood means that his approval of a band I like means more to me than that of any hip tastemaker.
Thus, among the proudest mooments of my year was the one where the li'l pubehead got hooked on the Drive-By Truckers. But even better was the news that the Truckers were a hit when he played them for stock slack-jaweds at a gen-yoo-wine Arkansas fish fry. (For the uninformed, that's where real rednecks in nonironic trucker hats cook catfish, drink kegs of Bud, and debate the merits of SEC football teams.)
Aint gonna hear no Fiery Furnaces or Shins blessed by fish fryers, are ya, Captain Coolbreeze?
It was a relief: As much as I love the Truckers- for whom I feel as the Oak Ridge Boys felt for Elvira- I've always worried that their main appeal is to those pasty rock writers who are too timid to actually listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd or David Allan Coe. Because, unlike those acts, the Truckers have taken great pains to avoid appearing like Confederate flag waving crackers. (Guitarist and singer Patterson Hood refers to it as struggling with "the duality of the Southern thing.") But the band's latest,The Dirty South , is as below the Mason Dixon line gritty as their last one, Decoration Day , was bleak. This time around, Hood and Co's subjects are straight from a hicksploitation flick: alcoholics, dirt-track stock cars, suicical rubes, and rural drug dealers. Hell, they even have three songs about stick-wielding Sheriff Buford Pusser, who inspired the first three Walking Tall movies."

aha...I get it...
-
It's a late show:
Friday, September 24
Doors Open 9
Allison Moorer 10
Drive-By Truckers 11:30
Crowd should be plenty rowdy by then.
-
I'm listening to Alabama Ass Whoopin right now, with the Skynrd cover. Woohoo!
-
It is going to be a late show but it will be the DBT set will be starting at 11:15. Sorry for the misinformation I posted up earlier. DBT's at 11:15 rather than 11:30. Of course now there will inevitably be some technical issue and they will end up going on at 11:30 so...as you were.
-
should i assume that catching the metro after the dbt set is out of the question?

It runs until 3:00 on weekends, no? Shouldn't be a problem. Only concern to keep in mind is if you're making a connection fairly far out from Metro Center that will be an earlier "last call" then the last train times downtown.
-
Talk about getting your moneys worth. That was $15 well spent. Allison Moorer played for an hour & DBT played for 2+ hours. I really wasnâ??t all that familiar with Allison Moorer, but by the end of her set, I was really impressed. Her lead guitarist is amazing and sometimes he seemed to steel the attention away form Allison.
During DBT set there was a lot of fist pumping with a beer in hand going on (their music encourages that). All in all they sounded great. Some people must not enjoy a long set because the crowd started to thin out at 1am. But, DBT continued to play till 1:45am.
They did one cover song. Who was that by?
-
'people who died', jim carrol.
-
1:45??
It was pushing 2:30 by my watch.
Great show. I thought it got better the longer it went on. Apparently, most people don't have the stamina to keep up.
Great crowd mix too. Guidos, rednecks, preps, hipsters, cowboys...

I'm feeling very sheepish today. I behaved very badly...too many lemon drops for me. :o
-
Their set started at 11:15pm and ended at 2:45am. Longest show I've ever seen at 930.
-
i had 'em goin' to last call (230)...
anyway, she ain't revved till the rods are thrown...
...till the cramps at least...
-
I had 11:25 until 2:35. Amazing. Especially when you consider that they were loaded early on and pushed through it.
Loved the brief house lights before the second encore, if only to clear it out a little more.
Highlights based purely on it being a late 3+ hour show:
The two guys who ended up having the entire balcony stage right to themselves for the last hour almost and seemed to be lovin it. In fact the entire balcony that was almost deserted by the end.
There was enough room for the guy in the wheelchair to tear it up mid-center of the floor.
Isbell and Cooley just rockin over the remaining crowd groping the stage in some sort of "who's going to quit first" battle.
No wait leaving the club with only 200 people left.
Downsides:
The naughty girl in the pink top at the front of the balcony stage left stopped dancing suggestively and went home.
-
The hell with Neko Case. Allison Moorer is the hottest woman in music.

Best show of the year, by far.
Allison Moorer rocked. Saw her three years ago, and she has moved more toward the rock side of things, and it works for her. Was good to see Dan Baird, 50(!) year old former lead singer of the Georgia Satellites, playing guitar for her (not the lead guitarist, but the other guy). He doesn't look a day over 35, chain smoking and all.
And the Truckers were awesome. I had it 11:25-2:34. Isbell has really developed into something special. They played just about every song I wanted them to, and played them all kick-ass.
Good to meet you Grotty. I'll get you a beer at next years show...and thanks for pushing the Truckers on us boardies.
-
This was the best show of the year so far, and probably will be retain that title, for me...
The Truckers are the best band out there right now.
-
clearily you haven't seen Myracle Brah who rip it up for 30 minutes, no marathon three hour sets required to prove their the worth
-
I've read enough critical pans of their albums to make me avoid seeing them.
I think they have something to do with that band Love Nut, who I thought was godawful back in the 90's when I lived in Bawlmer.

I think Kosmo must be kidding around...
I was always put off by the goony name, but I listened to some clips and they're OK, but nothing major, IMHO...

Ministry will blow everyone away on the 25th.
-
I didn't realize Ministry were homosexual. Not that there's anything wronf with it

no kidding here... Myracle Brah is one of my most favorite bands and they put on a killer set! Much more satisfying then that DBT show at the Black Cat.
-
I guess it depends on what kind of music you like. I can see a Myracal Brah show being pleasant...but I wouldn't use the word "satisfying"...I m ust say, this last show at 9:30 was way better than when they were at the Black Cat. Granted, if you're not into it, three hours is long...but if you are, you really appreciate their energy and hard work...

Agreement here.
You & Rhett were suprisingly easy to spot. Probably because there was a notable lack of couples @ the show. Actually...a lack of females in general. I did see this one though right above me: "The naughty girl in the pink top at the front of the balcony stage left"
Anyone get a setlist or know of one? My foggy head could use the reminders.

Seriously Rob - you should give DBT a try sometime. Just following your musical preferences over time on here - I think you may dig them. It's pretty much just straight up unpretentious rock n roll. Rockin' just for the joy of it. Nothing like a lot of the indie stuff you abhor.
Anyone at the show think they were country?!?!?

I'll start with Franz Ferdinand, I've heard so much talk in here, I bought the cd the other day and will give it a shot. If I like it then maybe I'll take your advice on DBT.

While that's a good plan - there's really NO relationship between Franz Ferdinand & DBT.
Interestingly, I really don't like the FF record. It would probably top my most over-rated list for the year.
Don't punish DBT for FF's crap record :D

O No.
Did you see the girl with her hair on fire?

Three mp3s from DBT:
Never Gonna Change (http://www.drivebytruckers.com/mp3s/NeverGonnaChange.mp3)
Carl Perkins Cadillac (http://www.drivebytruckers.com/mp3s/CarlPerkinsCadillac.mp3)
Puttin People On The Moon (http://www.drivebytruckers.com/mp3s/PuttinPeopleontheMoon.mp3)

Nice choices - covers all 3 songwriters & singers.
If Mr Gee doesn't like any of these I'll relent. And go see Ministry.

I must've missed that.
I was in front of the stacks at stage left. About 10-12 feet back. Near where the giant red-shirted, black-hatted cowboy was standing for the latter part of the show.

I was right beside you then. Behaving badly for the last third of the show. Anyone else think that the floor got VERY slippery? :D Must have been all that beer getting tossed about. It's not a good thing when your behavior appears to scare a member of the Drive-by Truckers - I think I nearly pulled the Drummer (EZB) off the stage after the last encore. <img src="http://www.drivebytruckers.com/images/askezb2.jpg" alt=" - " />
And then I gave thatguy a little hug on the way out - he humored me.
The flaming hair girl - she asked my friend for a light & he obliged while hardly paying attention. He lit her hair instead. They had to pat her out. She stayed near him though. He bought her a drink & she enjoyed the rest of the show. Maybe he'll get a girlfriend of it. Just imagine telling your kids that story of how you met.

Behind the frat boys going crazy? Or were you the frat boys going crazy?
-
I'm not sure that Franz Ferdinand and Drive By Truckers are at all comparable, other than both receive too much hype.
My wife also commented at the show that she thought you (Guiny) would like the Truckers.

There were college aged guys right in front & behind me. Mixed in amongst all the other diverse demographics. Rowdy but nice anough. One of them kept knocking into me & when he turned around his eyes were closed. I think he was barely concious. Still singing though.

Behind and to the outside of those guys.

The reason I said Franz is because everytime a band is hyped in here, I go buy the cd's sometimes and come away disappointed. Thats why I was comparing Franz and DBT, not that they sound the same, but because they were recommended by boardies. I actually saw the cd at best buy and came inches away from buying it. Now that three boardies suggested I might like it, I'll put it on my list. Now.....Back to the new Megadeth cd.

yeah - I thought something seemed wrong.
I wonder why they left it off - this is actually a track listing for a shared cd

Hey Grotty, What's the story with the song "Nine Bullets"? I saw that it's an old song, and Isbell sang it live. Who sings it on record?

It is an old song. On Pizza Deliverance. It's a Patterson Hood song (written & sung). It's always been a crowd favorite - so I think that little change was in reality pretty controversial. I know a few of my friends were VERY disappointed.
It's just another example of the new kid taking over the world.
