It's been awhile, so I thought that I'd resurrect this timely topic.
-
yes. they do....thanks for asking.
-
Yes, they do.
-
Why do they?
Honestly, I don't think I've ever heard a WILCO song before.

Ditto. So I never say they suck. I *imagine* they're overrated; then again, I know I hold GBV in particularly high esteem and that's a disputed issue as well.

Why would you not at least be curious enough to given them a listen?
You like everything else that has ever been released in the history of music, and go to every show that is announced (if it's over $20). I don't see any reason why you wouldn't enjoy Wilco.
:D

Just try to imagine what a Pabst Blue Ribbon commercial would sound like, and you basically have all 7,943 GBV songs in your head right there.

Wilco is excellent. Their last three albums are spectacular. They take chances but still remain extremely listenable. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was one of the best albums of 2002 and a ghost is born, albeit not as superb as YHF, is one of the best of 2004.
-
I'm a long time Wilco fan and have liked all their stuff until this year
A Ghost Is Born is just pure shite though....

amen brother

I disagree. The first three songs on Ghost are some of my favorite Wilco songs recorded.

I thought I started to like it, but it has been a long time since I listened to it, so I think that means I agree with you.

Never really had the opportunity to hear Wilco...don't have friends in town who love the band (and, hence, play their albums); I'm not going to buy it without listening first due to the controversy over which album to buy, etc. There are a lot of bands I've never heard -- I'm far less exposed to the world of music than a lot/most of the other folks here on the board.
Much to your disillusionment, I buy less and attend less than you think. Far more than you, certainly, but I have a definite genre or two on which I concentrate...a difference between us is that I'll happily pay $10 to check out a band I'm interested in.

I'm torn these days.
I agree that the first song on the new record is one of my favorite Wilco Songs.
Yet I also agree that I haven't been listening to it much lately - so maybe I really don't like the record.
Either way - I do still think that a smartly selected Wilco mix cd remains a fine, fine piece of musical art. So...No - I don't think they suck.
Wasn't this topic a joke? :D And then why are we re-discussing this again on it?

If you go to DBT - I'll bring that 'smart' Wilco mix - it'll make your toes curl.
In a good way.

Couldn't agree more. The first songs of this last album are excellent.
Wiclo doesn't suck at all.

That's the amazing thing about Wilco, I will say....
GBV as well (which made it all the more fun to bring them up!)
Thanks for the offer on the "smart" Wilco CD -- probably just what I need! After reading your post in the DBT thread, I think I have to go to DBT...

weird ... i love wilco but think that "at least that's what you said" is one of their worst songs ever. and that "hell is chrome" sounds like a crappy pink floyd song. as if there is any other kind. yeah, even counting "piper." the rest of the album is pretty great, tho. i mean, they'll never top "summerteeth," but whatever.

i concur with the distinguished gentleman from the great white north.

Maybe I should rephrase:
"Isn't it not the truth that WILCO doesn't suck?"

Unfortunetely I have and can honestly say your not missing much.
-
I don't like Wilco but I like them a lot more than GBV.
And Pink Floyd use to be great before the burn-outs adopted them.
-
Might I add that Theologians is one hell of a song as well.
-
I am a big Wilco fan, but lately they have veered into Radiohead "My music doesn't need to be commercial, or interesting, or not make people want to slit their wrists if they don't just fall asleep while listening to it" territory. A Ghost Is Born just plain sucked, mainly because of the downright ARROGANCE of putting out something so dissonant and dull as a major release at this point in their career. Good for them on being 'experimental' but A Ghost Is Born didn't do anything particularly avant garde - it's sorta like an alt-country Sonic Youth album with all the life and energy completely drained out of it. If it was interesting in the least, I'd cut them a break, but they seem to be doing nothing more than trying to shake the 'johnny-come-lately' fans they picked up during Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and I think that sucks.
-
Wilco rules. A Ghost Is Born is excellent. AM sucks. Everything else is great. A Ghost Is Born is not avant-garde, you're just reading too many irrelevant reviews. They're my favorite current rock'n'roll band, and live, you just can't beat them. I didn't get into them until YHF, and it wasn't because of the hype, it's just because that's what I wanted from them.
Jeff has always been into "avant-garde" music anyway, and nothing about A Ghost Is Born is "arrogant." The only "difficult" track would be "Less Than You Think," but because of the noise at the end, people forget the first 3 minutes, which is a fantastic, sad little folk song. I think A Ghost Is Born definitely requires patience and repeated listens at first, but what you'll discover is that there's nothing that different on it and the songs are incredible. The only songs mentioned on this thread have been from the first half of the LP. What about "The Late Greats"? "Theologians"? "Company In My Back"? "I'm A Wheel"? All very "accessible" and all very perfect.

does wilco suck? hmm. NO. they don't.
