Title: WashPost Express
Post by: HoyaSaxa03 on September 23, 2004, 12:14:00 pm
I don't post/read here a lot, but you guys seem pretty hooked in to the local music scene, so I'm interested in hearing your reactions to the Weekend Pass put out every thursday in  Express (http://www.readexpress.com)  and the Club Picks on fridays ... useful? drivel? don't read it?

I freelance for them, but i only get reactions from my friends, so i'd be interested to hear the thoughts of some impartial people ...

 thanks.

I don't read The Express, and I believe that music info is not in the regular Post or online, correct?

 -edit-
Didn't notice the link the first time.  I read the Post, so I don't know that I'll go to the trouble to *download* the Express daily.  I'll take a look to check out the music stuff you're asking about, though.

Is the info/coverage in the Express different from/not in the Post?

Express is handed out at metro stops for free in the mornings, there's no real point of downloading the PDF on the web ... it's basically a good quick read while your commuting...

weekend pass is in express, not in the normal post...

One of my annoyances with the Post, though, is that their entertainment coverage (music, specifically) isn't all easily accessible/find-able and all available online.  The Express coverage should be online.  And while their Post print articles are available online, you don't 'know' they're there by going to "Music" in Arts & Living.  You only find them in the online print edition (or via a search, but you don't know it's there to search for...).

Is Weekend Pass always in the Thursday edition?

No offense to those involved, but isn't bigyawn just sort of a bunch of friends writing stuff for one another for kicks?

I read the Express, and must express my dismay that there were three artists smoking in today's issue...DBT, Nick Lowe, and Fiery Furnaces. Shame on the Express for tobacco glorification.

I actually read the Express today because there was one on my metro seat...read the Nick Lowe and Fiery Furnaces articles. Both were by the same person, is that you?

Yeh... Redsock also gets bands to go to clubs for kicks too, ass.

You're not serious, right?  What are you a grade school teacher?  What young impressionable minds will be swayed by a picture of a musician they never heard of in newspaper they probably won't look at.

umm... what does the Express know about music that I like that I don't know?  Not much.

Not to be all ego-y, but I know what I like and I keep good track of what's going on.

Oh, sorry. That's how it seemed like to me. But I don't follow it that closely.

I found the article on the Fiery Furnaces to be one of the better -- maybe best -- on them, and I've read a lot.  After *finally* hearing them, the Express piece gets closest to objectively describing their overall sound/vibe.

chimbley-- i hear you, and no offense taken ... this probably isn't the best place to ask my question ... express' target audience is the avg. metro-rider-worker-drone, not well-educated music lovers ...

i'd tend to think that the average person would gloss over or turn the page when they see a big article on a relatively obscure indie band like the fiery furnaces ...

Agreed.  Either they're interested or they're not.  Some people would probably think it's odd that I don't pore over the Business section.

my main problem with the Express is the guy handing them out stands right by the Metro steps and gets in your way as you're trying to get on the escalator.

I dunno...I think the Express fulfills a good niche...I don't know very much about the Fiery Furnaces, but I'd be more inclined to read about them as part of my 35 minute commute from the burbs than I would otherwise...I imagine there are other suburban commuters like me who are more likely to read about a band and go buy their cd than being part of the "indie" scene as an introduction to the band.

The guy at Dupont Circle South is annoying as hell. Add on the Jews for Jesus folks and I'm ready to scream.

No - I don't think so:
There's a link on Summers Kiss (the Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers fan site) for the bigyawn review of the new TS record:
  reviews (http://www.summerskiss.com/press/index.php#reviews)

 Bigyawn is goin' bigtime.    :D

It looks great on that list btw ~ nice company to be in. Even Kerrang!

Did BigYawn reject your review of Rhett Miller's latest CD again?

Its a while since I took the metro everyday.... But when I did I thought the music section in the express was quite impressive, it previewed some of the lesser known bands that were about to play, rather nicely.

Somedays, like today, I think most  of the people who post here are morons.

And here's my complaint -- even though the Drive By Truckers is listed in the WashPost "entertainment" email and is an editor's pick, when you go to the Post site's entertainment page on the  DBTs (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?node=entertainment/profile&id=1076514&typeId=17&type=musicevent&referrer=email), you get only club info, not the Express article.

Ditto to  Fiery Furnaces (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?node=entertainment/profile&id=1096022&typeId=17&type=musicevent&referrer=email); there you get the Post profile done a couple weeks ago, not today's good article from the Express.

I didn't think anything from the Express was online at all.

I've wanted to copy and paste stuff from it to here, but just assumed none of it was online.

the express is not the post, different entities ... express articles won't be reprinted on washingtonpost.com and vice-versa ...
