so like Fico, I have to make my plugs when I can...
anybody coming to the Rock and Roll Hotel next week for this show?
TUESDAY, FEB 13
stellastarr*
Monsters are Waiting
Soft Complex
$12 advance/$14 door
would be great to see some board folks out. this will be our last show for awhile as we're going to go and record a proper full length album...
-
This is probably going to sell out, isn't it...
Oy, it's a busy week! It's definitely on my calendar, so chances are good.
-
I really want to go to this but I just haven't gotten my act together and bought tickets. Plus, there's a lot of competition this month.
-
I'll be at this Saturday's show here in SF. I'll be sure to report back.
-
tickets are in hand...
-
yup, i'm planning on being there.
smackie, looking forward to getting a preview from you - thanks!
-
I've already bought my tickets, cant wait!
-
how is the sound at RnR Hotel?
-
the sound is actually pretty strong. I imagine stellastarr* will be bringing their own engineer, but Dan, the house guy at R&R, is really good.
glad to see so many people are coming. get there early if you want to catch us :)
-
will this sell out? i'm planning on going but i do not have tickets yet.
-
and by "strong", callat means "loud"... at least it was on the loud side last time I was there, albeit just after it opened. i'm sure they've gotten a handle on that PA by now. i'd recommend bringing earplugs just in case (then again i recommend earplugs for just about every live music venue).
get there early if you want to catch us
will try. what time is the fun kicking off, so i know what time to aim for?
-
yes, loud is definitely true.
its going to be an earlier night, I believe, given that its a Tuesday. We're expecting to go on at 8:30 and probably have about 30-40 minutes. Doors are at 8:00.

THANK YOU. while i can't wait to enjoy a good show, this old man wouldn't mind being in bed by midnight too...
-
Have a great show, callat. I wish I could attend, it's a great line-up.
-
If it weren't for Soft Complex, I would have recommended that you skip the opener. We had Minipop as the first band (decent, but not worth getting there early for) and Monsters are Waiting - a cheap Yeah Yeah Yeahs knock off and since I don't care for the YYY's, it was painful. But I always say support your own - so EVERYBODY get there for Soft Complex and then feel free to hit the back bar for MaW.
For purposes of full disclosure, I was in a bad mood before this show as I (1) went on a long run in the driving rain earlier in the day (2) the first band didn't start until 10, Stellastarr* didn't start until after midnight (3) it had been raining all week. Other than that, I was fine. So here you are, Stellastarr* at Bottom of the Hill in SF, Sat Feb 10:
Amanda now is a brunette. She looks better than ever. A+ - do you need anything more?
-
heh, as an inconsequential aside: any thoughts about the headliner's music or performance?
-
FYI - Monsters Are Waiting just cancelled, so we'll be hitting the stage around 9:30, and then stellastarr* at 10:30.
Thanks for the endorsement Vansmack - awesome of you.
-
I'm there for Amanda!!!

don't mean to diss MAW, but: AWESOME. based on smackie's review, we're not missing much and i'm mostly interested in the other two bands anyways. if this was a weekend night, i'd be happy to kick around and check out all three. what with it being a school-night, i'm happy to optimize my time.
-
Sorry, I just thought you guys would like to hear about Amanda....
Smackette is a bigger Stellastarr* fan than I am and she was the driving force behind going to the show. I liked their debut, but found the second album underwhelming.
The place was packed - I'm guessing around 300 for a 275 capacity venue. It was as crowded as I had ever seen it.
They openend with a rousing rendition of "Lost in Time" and I thought we were in for a lot of the second album. I couldn't have been more wrong. They took the keyboard off the stage and ripped through the majority of the self titled debut, played a few songs off "Harmonies for the Haunted" and even sprinkled a few new tracks throughout, one of which can be heard on their myspace page: "Warchild" (http://www.myspace.com/stellastarr). They rocked a lot harder than they did on their album and played for about an hour and a half.
Tracks I remember(incomplete and in no particular order):
Lost in Time
Moongirl
Sweet Troubled Soul
Warchild
No Weather
in the Walls
Pulp Song
Jenny
A Million Miles
Damn this Foolish Heart
My Coco
Somewhere Across Forever
And some new ones that didn't yet have titles. Expect a new album this year.
Loud as hell and fun, I had a great time, and not just because I stood right in front of Amanda. You guys are in for a treat.

Gee, I hope it wasn't something I said...
-
does anyone know the likelihood of a show getting cancelled because of the snow? I really want to go to this one!
-
The weather is hindering my final decision...but hold crap that set list is awesome. I might just brave it regardless.
-
If you need another reason, you should go because the band paid for the tour themselves after parting ways with RCA. I think you could sense the relief in their performance. Support them.
I'm not the most familar with the second album but after a quick listen, I think they played:
Diver
On My Own
Stay Entertained
And one of the new songs was tentatively called "Coming Down."
-
Wow, I didn't know the band parted with RCA. And self-financing the tour...I'm definitely impressed.
I don't think the weather should be a big problem.
-
So it's definite no MAW? I don't see the YYY comparison, cheap or otherwise but everyone can have their own opinion and it's too bad those in DC won't have an opportunity to actually decide for themselves. I'm glad SC is going to play, but highly disappointed MAW is not.
-
Definitely no MAW. Sorry guys; we were looking forward to playing with them as well.
-
Just to throw in my two cents on Monsters Are Waiting, even though it doesn't really matter anymore, I really liked what I heard of them when they opened for She Wants Revenge and Pretty Girls Make Graves. I picked up their album, in fact, and it's not bad. I don't really see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs comparison, either, personally. I really don't care for the YYY's, but I like MAW.
-
Well it's disappointing when a band has to back out of a gig, so that's too bad. But I must say that work is sickly busy right now, so the idea of seeing a great show and being home by midnight is very appealing. I'm looking forward to this. I used to hate the second Stellastarr album, but I've kinda come around on it.
-
Great show, wintry mix be damned...
-
indeed, fun night out.
and smakie, you were absolutely right: amanda is now a brunette. that's pretty much all one needs to know. all other details pale. the way she was biting her lower lip while laying down those bass lines... *swoon*. she is hands-down the hottest woman in rock today.
-
great show last night! stellastarr* was great and my friends and i enjoyed soft complex and want to know when you guys will be playing next around here? only problem last night was that rnr hotel still has to work on thier sound, it was kinda off for a good portion of the show.
-
That was good! Stellastarr* are much better in a small club than a big stage. I'm sure they'd prefer it the other way around, but that's my take on it.
Soft Complex was good. The singer was interesting -- he looks like Rick Nielson and sounds like Morrissey. Hey, if it works, it works. I liked them a lot.
-
Thanks to all the forumites for coming! We had a blast, stellastarr* was top notch and a class act to work with, and it was great to see so many people braved the weather.
And thanks for the compliments all. To answer the question about gigs, we're playing Rock and Romp in early March. But the next proper show in DC is right here at the 9:30 Club. March 10 as a part of Infamy.
-
"*swoon*. she is hands-down the hottest woman in rock today."
"Dems fighting words!"
- Melissa Auf Der Maur
"Yeh, but what can she do with a pair of drum sticks?"
- Meg White
"I'll try not to take that personally."
- Shirley Manson
"If we could have made the trip I would have changed your mind."
- Annalee Fery
"As soon as I put my crack pipe down, I'm coming after you for saying that."
- Darcy
I could go on, but I agree Amanda is in the top 10. And the show was great the clusterphuck outside the venue aside, and SC won over my sceptical friend.
