Although I hate not to see my team here, I still think this is the best competition in sports. Who do you think will make it to the next round? Lokomotiv is already 2-0. My candidates are:
Arsenal, Deportivo, R. Sociedad, Manchester U., Stuttgart, Bayern Munich, Milan and Lokomotiv.
Celta - Arsenal
Deportivo - Juventus
R. Sociedad - Lyón
Oporto - Manchester U.
Stuttgart - Chelsea
Bayern Múnich - Real Madrid
Sparta Praga - Milán
Lokomotiv - Mónaco

You should have put the "unfortunately" next to the Madrid choice, they are just a bunch of arrogants.
-
Celta 2 - Arsenal 3
Deportivo 1 - Juventus 0
R. Sociedad 0 - Lyón 1
Oporto 2 - Manchester U. 1
Stuttgart 0 - Chelsea 1
Bayern Múnich 1 - Real Madrid 1
Sparta Praga 0 - Milán 0
Lokomotiv 2 - Mónaco 1
Arsenal, Deportivo, R. Sociedad (they will score soon), Manchester United (tough game), Chelsea, Bayern (I hope Real Madrid suffers from not having Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos), Milan and Lokomotiv.

to make matters worse Man U just drew Arsenal in the semis of the FA cup - tough game

I'm just thankful there's a couple of weeks away before the semis...because if the game was this week they'd slaughter us going by the way the two teams are playing at the moment.

agreed, its been a rough few weeks in red devil land
-
shit - a last minute Porto goal knocks us out of the Champs League
looking more and more like that semi final against Arsenal will be make or break as far as this season is concerned
-
Fuck, they made it to quarter finals.
Oporto
Deportivo
Lyon
Chelsea
Madrid
Milan
Monaco
Arsenal
I guess it's going to be Madrid, Arsenal or Milan, with chances for Deportivo La Coruna.

Sorry Barcelona but....
COME ON MADRID!!! COME ON MADRID!!!
Just so Beckham can rub it in Fergusons face.
Evidently Uniteds second goal that was disallowed was an awful decision by the linseman....Arsenholes have requested he run the line for the semi-final at Villa park.
Even if United had gone through they wouldn't have gone all the way. It's just not their year. I hope they can get it out of their minds in time to win the FA cup because it's all they have left to play for.

Is 1-0 considered a slaughter in Soccer since most games end up 0-0 going into the shootout?

Actually, for the same reason you say Go Madrid, I have to go Go Arsenal. I hope they beat Madrid. I think they have the best player on earth, Henry, he is just the best player I have seen in a lot of time.
I can't stand Beckham (and I think he is not that good), I can't stand Ronaldo, can't stand Guti, can't stand Michel Salgado, can't stand most of them. But most of all, I can't stand Zidane, he is supposed to be a leftist guy and he is playing for the most fascist team in Europe. I just hope they lose in the next round.
By the way, in the UEFA Cup tomorrow, Barcelona plays Celtic in Glasgow. The articles these days in Barcelona about the rivalry between Celtic and Glasgow Rangers are really interesting.

Mankie, it was an awful call. 3 Porto Jerseys played Scholes onsides by a good 3 feet. The linesman really blew it.
I knew it would come back to haunt United too, who really put up the best defensive effort I've seen since Rio's suspension. So close man, so close. Djemba-Djemba was magnificent in mid-field too until he broke a rib.
I was not-do shocked that they called the foul that led to the eventual goal (it was slight nudge on a high ball). The ref let Alberto Carols dive left and right, but gave him the free kick everytime, then Ronaldo gets fouled, has to be stretchered off and to no surprise, no call. It was very frustrating to watch.
I froze the replay of the off-sides call on my TiVo and left the TiVo on overnight just so I could remember that United did it right.

Yes, interesting to see how much they hate each other. By interesting I don't mean that I like this way of hatred, it is just that as I was reading the articles I became more and more curious to read more about the origins of both clubs and how the rivalry has evolved over the years. I hate religion, so it is even more interesting to see how religion (I doubt today it plays a big role, I guess it's more the identification with Ireland or Britain) could shape this rivalry so much, at least at the beginning.

by the way Barcelona, I think you're in Spain these days - people must be devastated by those terrible bombings in madrid....hang in there
-
What's the difference between Leicester City and Manchester United?
Leicester still have players in Europe!!!
:D
Lets say Arseholes win the Champions League (God forbid)
Will the victory parade be in Paris or London? Just wondering....
Guiny....I was talking about Arseholes and United in the semis of the FA cup...which hasn't been played yet...you must have contacts with the refs to find out what the score is going to be. And you can slaughter a team 1-0, just ask any real fan of the game.

Not to mention the clause in the Beckham deal that gives United more Real Madrid dollars for each round farther Madrid goes than United. And heaven forbid Real win it all - it costs them a fortune. Apparently, Peter Kenyon wasn't as much of an idiot as Fergie.

Fergie isn't an idiot...just a stubborn, arrogant old man who let his ego get the better of him at the expense of his football team. (didn't I tell you we'd suffer without Becks' smackie?) I don't know much, but I do know my United.

Idiot was strong word, but I'm still really disappointed in how this season has unfolded. I can't even begin to imagine how bad it would be if Barthez was still in the net...
Anyhow, yes, I will concur that while you may know very little else in this world, you do know your United MUCH better than most.

OLE, OLE, OLE OLE OLE. OLE, OLE, OLE OLE OLE!!
I got drunk in celebration of those french twats going down last night. I really did. (Got a bad head tonday) That was the greatest result in the Champions League since United's magnificent win in 1999! United don't have much hope of catching them, but I hope Chelski can take the premiership from them too.
I also take great satisfaction knowing that although they are unbeaten in the premier league this season...they can't beat us.....We beat them in the Charity Shield....drew at Old Trafford, drew at Highbury and beat them in the FA Cup! You know that has got to be eating them up inside.
I wish Madrid had gone through, but I understand your joy Barcelona...I just wanted Becks to win it and shove it up Fergusons arse, because getting rid of him was nothing other than a personal vendetta and wrong for the team.
I think I might want Chelski to go all the way now, will have to think about it though.

If they choke again this year...and they're already coughing....I wouldn't be surprised if wanger is history. Now that would be twice as sweet because then henrietta would fuck off to Madrid and the rest of the frog twats can fuck off back across the chunnel!

Mankie, for the record. Madrid has won 9 European Cups. The first six of them in the fifties and sixties, during Franco's dictatorship (those days in which Franco decided that Di Stefano had to play in Madrid rather than in Barcelona to prevent the success of the controversial separatist regions). The other three between 1997 and 2002, during the right wing party governments. Never won it with a center or left wing government (1975 - 1996). This year, three days after the moderate left wing socialist party won the elections, they lost the Spanish Cup final and on Tuesday were humiliated by Monaco. The relationship between soccer and politics is pretty interesting in Spain. Things might change next year if they get Henry and a decent defense, but we will see.
-
That's very interesting about the politics "coincidences" with Madrid. I wouldn't be surprised if they did a swap deal with Arsenal... Beckham for Henry, seeing as his wife can't seem to settle in Spain. I think a more likely scenario is Beckham to go to Chelski seeing as they're the only team with the spending power.
As for who I want to win the Champions League...I think I'll let it be a case of "may the best team win"....it would be nice for me for an English team to win, but the flip side of that is Chelski have done something that United have been accused of for years, but innocent of....buying success!

Beckham for Makelele is the more likely scenario in a swap.

Do you really think Beck's would approve a trade to the hated Arsenal though?
How's this?
Becks to Chelski.....United take Duff from Chelski. :D
-
Real Madrid really need a good defender, otherwise they won't win anything next year. I still think that Madrid lost a lot by letting Makelele go and getting Beckham. He hasn't shown anything in Spain. I'd like Deportivo to win the Champions League, that was a mostly second division team in Spain until the late eighties, they have done quite well since then. However, a Makelele goal for Chelsea in the final game would be so funny... Real Madrid let him go because he is not considered a star, but last year he certainly did more than Raul and Figo combined. As for Fergusson's assistant in Manchester United, now coaching Real Madrid, poor guy, he is terrible!
-
I know we disagree on the talent of Beckham...but that aside, Madrid needed Beckham like they needed a hole in the head. I thought that was a very similar situation to when United got Veron, and look what happened to him. Madrid seem to get stars for the sake of it, regardless of wether there's a need. That's why I think they'll go for Henry.
Madrid's game plan as always seemed to be to outscore the opponent, they don't seem to put too much emphasis on defence, which has come back to haunt them this Champions League.

While I would love Duff at United, Real will take Makelele back from Chelsea in exchange for Beckham before Chelsea give up Duff.

Saw the game today, his performance is still so awfully mediocre. Even McManaman played better at Madrid. The best thing is that Madrid with all its stars seems more part of a fashion magazine or of Hello! I just hope they don't start playing well against Barcelona two weeks from now.

Sad Beckham and Real Madrid plunge to new depths
April 11, 2004
MADRID (AFP) - David Beckham's worst week of his professional and personal life plunged to new depths when his Real Madrid team lost 3-0 at home to Osasuna and surrendered the lead of the Spanish championship.
The England skipper, who woke up on Sunday to more lurid allegations concerning his private life splashed across the British tabloids, found no hiding place as Real Madrid suffered only their third home league defeat in four seasons to follow their Champions League exit at Monaco.
Goals from Valmiro Valdo, ironically on loan at Osasuna from Real, Pablo Garcia and Mohamed El Yaagoubi Moha were enough to strip Real of pole position after title rivals Valencia had earlier defeated Real Zaragoza 1-0 to go top by two points.
"I am sad and very disappointed," said coach Carlos Queiroz who now looks certain for the axe.
"Losing the first home game this season is a bad moment. Our morale wasn't the best after losing to Monaco and the Spanish Cup final, but the players are professional and they will recover.
"I haven't talked to the officials (about his future). My priority is with the players."
Beckham's first touch came in the first minute of the game and that was to kick the ball back into his own net in frustration after Valdo had opened the scoring making the most of a defensive mix-up.
Beckham, watched by wife Victoria and son Brooklyn in the Bernabeu stands, endured a lacklustre start before almost pulling his side level in the 19th minute.
He unleashed a lob from the halfway line which floated over the head of a backtracking Osasuna goalkeeper Ricardo Sanzol only for the ball to land on top of the goal.
The England skipper then came in for some rough treatment getting caught on the side of the head by Garcia before taking a nasty knock to the calf.
Things got worse for Real when, first, Ronaldo was forced to limp off with a thigh injury and they fell further behind when goalkeeper Iker Casillas dropped a cross at the feet of Garcia who lobbed the ball in from the edge of the box for 2-0 just before the break.
On the hour mark, it was 3-0 when a long clearance from Sanzol allowed Valdo to sprint away from Roberto Carlos and his cross was headed in by Moha.
Zinedine Zidane then had a goal disallowed before Beckham was convinced he should have been awarded a penalty after clashing with Antonio Lopez.
By the final whistle, there were huge swathes of empty seats inside the Bernabeu as fans showed their displeasure, although Mrs Beckham was still there waiting to confront her husband over allegations that he has had two affairs.
Miguel Angel Angulo scored the only goal of the game as Valencia won 1-0 at Real Zaragoza.
Angulo headed in a free-kick from Jorge Lopez in the 71st minute but the win was overshadowed by a knee injury suffered by striker Mohamed Sissoko which could rule him out of Wednesday's UEFA Cup clash against Bordeaux.
In two weeks' time, Real Madrid face bitter rivals Barcelona who kept up their push for a Champions League spot next season when they defeated Valladolid 3-1 on Saturday.
Brazilian World Cup winner Ronaldinho scored one of the goals which set Barca on their way but then put his good work to waste by getting sent off.
Ronaldinho had already been booked for refusing to retreat the full ten metres from a free-kick and then received his second yellow card in the 55th minute when he tried to kick the ball out of the hands of Valladolid goalkeeper Albano Bizzarri.
Barca were cruising at the time having gone 2-0 ahead through Javier Saviola and Ronaldinho who found the net for the 20th time this season.
After the Brazilian's dismissal, Valladolid took full advantage with Oscar pulling a goal back in the 66th minute but Andres Iniesta then scored his first goal in the top flight to make sure of the three points in the 85th minute.

Saw the game too. Defense was non-existent for Real. Big difference between this season and last.

The Wash Post really pissed me off with it though. They'd do it one week, then skip three then do it for another couple then skip another four.  I finally emailed them and said either put the fucker in every week or don't bother at all!
They never responded......

Keane makes himself available for Irish team
13 April 2004 16:55
The Manchester United captain, Roy Keane, has announced he is making himself available for selection for future Ireland international matches.
Mr Keane, who departed from the Irish international team during the World Cup two years ago, issued a statement, via his agent, to RTÃ? News this afternoon.
The development follows discussions with the manager of the Irish team, Brian Kerr and the manager of Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson.
In a telephone call to RTÃ? News, Mr Keane's agent, Michael Kennedy said that 'following discussions with Brian Kerr and Alex Ferguson, Roy Keane has agreed to make himself available for selection for international games in the future'.
Reacting to the news in an FAI statement, Mr Kerr said he was delighted at Mr Keane's decision, and added that he would look forward to working with the Cork midfielder.
'He brings quality and experience to a potentially excellent squad of players whose sole focus is the World Cup qualifying matches next autumn,' Mr Kerr said.
The Irish team is due to begin its qualifying campaign for the 2006 World Cup in September against Cyprus.
-
I read that yesterday, that's great news...unless England end up meeting Ireland during any competitions of course.....It was a crying shame that Irelands most profilic player for years was not on the squad....like Brazil without Pele. Mind you, I'll bet some of the players who were around when the shit hit the fan will be thinking, "Oh shite, I hope he doesn't remember I sided with McCarthy"
I was almost hoping Sunderland would've made it to the FA Cup final so we could've had a showdown between Keane and McCarthy.
-
Ranieri can say whatever he wants, but to have the chance of playing with one more player in the second half when the score was 1-1 and then lose 3-1 just tells you how bad a coach he is. He didn't do anything special as a coach in Italy and Spain and he certainly hasn't showed too much in England either. I agree with him that Abramovich does not know a shit about soccer, but neither does he.

I think he's done an okay job at Chelski considering he was given all the quality players with quality player egos and tried to make a team out of them all, that's not easy and there's only a handful of managers that could pull that off.
I do believe he's a good manager, but not a great one...he should be given another year at least with Chelski because he's done better than I expected in one season.

Newcastle 2 - Chelsea 1 = Arsenal Title!! :D

So who do you think is getting relegated?

So Valencia won the UEFA cup against Marseille. I think Valencia has been the best team in Europe this year. Even in the case that Porto won the Champions League final next week, I would still think that Valencia was the best team. They don't have any big star, but they are an incredibly serious team, very effective. I doubt Arsenal would beat them.
