Whoa, slow down; this seems like a popular show. Hopefully the Black Cat has cleaned up their fruit fly problem; but at least they have Bacardi. Neither heaven nor space could keep me away.

I think the last Nada Surf show sold out. And doesn't Army of Me usually draw a large crowd? So I'm kinda surprised it hasn't sold out yet.

i dont think the last one was anywhere near a sell out and a lot of the crowd left after opener ozma

high/low and let go are the best, high/low is louder rock and was their one hit wonder album, their hit is not one of the better songs on the album

I would definitely go with Let Go. I made a list of my 40 favorite albums from 2002-2005 a couple of months ago, and that came in at #2.
Their new one is pretty good, but not on the level of it's predeceasor. I'm not familiar with anything before those two albums, except for their cheesy modern rock him of 1996 (which I recently picked up for 10 cents)

I saw them in Richmond in... uh... Sept 03(?) and they said right up front when someone requested it that they would not be playing it. Probably 20 of the 50 people there left.

I have not seen them live yet, but they have an import only Live in Brussels album from 2004 on which they played it. The person (who is from Spain, hence the imperfect English) who reviewed the live album on amazon said:
Shows nada surf being fabulous performers live,because many of the songs sound even better in this live recording than in the studio version.Impressive is Caw`s voice above all,showing the " popular " emo kids that this man can actually sing.Shows too that they`ve permanently toured the world because both guitarist and bassist speak perfect french during the breaks.Recorded in Brussels, Belgium,Europe where they have a loyal fanbase.Includes " popular" played in a way much more indie pop than Weezer-like.

that reminds me, the bassist seemed to be a tool when I saw them, I am sure you will give us your opinion

so this show is one of the times where i kinda wish i wasn't Jewish (i have to do family/holiday stuff that night), because this looks like it's going to be a REALLY great show.
definitely start with Let Go. this is an amazing album; and Happy Kid is one of my top ten favorite songs...probably. i'd say. yup.
and make sure all of you catch Army of Me, too!
shows where Army have opened for more well-known indie bands like this have been known to sell out maybe a half hour after doors open or whatever, so if you're not buying tix in advance make sure you get there early.
if somebody will please post the Nada set list after the show; you will own my soul.

OK, this may not be very popular, but I was pretty disappointed in this show. The sound was horrible. I've been to a lot of Black Cat shows, and this was the worst sounding Black Cat show I can remember. I blame Nada Surf's microphones or amps. Or maybe the regular Black Cat sound guy was on vacation or something? Anyway, it was really muddy.
I wasn't particularly impressed by Nada Surf either. They rocked all right and their songwriting is very good, but their performances just didn't grab me at any point. I'd almost go as far as saying that I liked Say Hi to Your Mom more than Nada Surf. It's possible Nada Surf just had the unenviable position of following The White Stripes and The Decemberists on my concert-going schedule, and they suffered in comparison to those excellent shows.

Can anybody tell me what songs they did BEFORE "Inside of Love"? Other commitments prevented us from arriving until then. Our friend told us we missed 4-5 songs, though he doesn't know their stuff, so didn't know which songs.
I agree that the sound sucks. But I've found that to be par for the course at the Black Cat. Easily the worst sound quality of any music venue I regularly attend, so I was prepared.
I'd have to disagree about Nada Surf. I thought they were very good. The definitely passed my "Will I see them the next time they are here?" test, which very few bands do. Great songwriting. It was my first time seeing them, and what a treat. I thought they were a bit more rawkish than on record, and some of the subtle beauty is lost, but hey they were good at rawking. Did they have the magnetism of Rhett Miller or the musical chops of Drive By Truckers? No. But they were solid. And I would say they compared favorably to the Decemberists...unlike the Decemberists, here was an indie rock singer who can actually carry a tune. And their songs are crisp and punchy, even the slow ones. The Decemberists, at times were meandering and boring (e.g. the Tain). Though at other times, they were enjoyable.
Pollard: I didn't catch the bassist behaving like a "tool", though white guys like him with dreadlocks and dangling cigarettes are in general pretty silly to look at.
One person yelled for "Popular" at the start of the second encore. The drummer said "We'll play that if you leave." (followed by an apology). I though that comment was pretty funny.

I got there right at the end of "Inside of Love". I caught a glimpse of the setlist on the soundboard, and I'm pretty sure I saw "Blizzard of 77" and "Happy Kid" on the list.

I disagree. In my opinion, most of the Black Cat shows I attend sound OK, if not great. For example, the recent Q and Not U and Supersystem show I attended sounded pretty good. Last night was exceptionally bad, I think. It sounded like poor-quality microphones to me.

To each his or her own. "The Tain" is my favorite Decemberists song, and I've never found it boring.
