what you do guys think?
will it sell out?
was kinda shocked that there isnt a presale for these, or maybe they arent a big deal?
-
with the general hype around them I'd be shocked if it didn't sell out - is the album any good?
-
Show in NYC sold out in 2 hours yesterday. Other than NYC and DC, only other show is in Austin, TX. No others scheduled yet.
-
yea i was wondering the same thing.
i lost intrest in the band after i heard that DM wasnt part of the project.
but i havent followed up on it, so maybe he is on it.
-
Got my tickets, the cd is great.
-
I can't make this show but I'll be checking them out during Coachella.
-
If by DM you mean Danger Mouse, he is involved with the album. He produced it.
The album is fairly incredible in my opinion and I got tickets to this show this morning. It's actually on my birthday. Who wants to hang out at the zoo the day of?
It will be great to see Tony Allen and I hear there may be a Clash song involved in the encore.

I'm definitely going, have heard great things about them and Im sure its going to sell out....
-
i wonder if DM will be there?
-
Webster Hall holds 1400 and sold out in a hurry. I would expect a fast sell out here and I can't wait for the show.
-
And NYC Metro area probably has five or more times the population as DC Metro area.
-
OK, so DC tickets will be cheaper on ebay than NYC tickets!
-
I like this record as well... It's going to take a couple more listens to hear all the layers in this one, but it has the feel of Damon Albarn sitting in with the Clash during the Sandinista recording sessions.
-
according to pitchfork's review of their show in Bristol, UK, "Guns of Brixton" is the encore. This is your big chance, kids ....
-
tix still available - weird. maybe DC really is lame
i jumped on 'em as soon as they went on sale, maybe i should have waited and saved on surcharges...
-
sweetcell: could be a sign of addiction?! j/k
-
I think it should sell out soon. If it doesn't, hey, it's their loss.
How many chances do you get to see a member of the Clash? Or Tony Allen? That's rarer than seeing the Police. Or a panda at the zoo.
Brian
-
i dont think people know who makes up this band.
i got stucked in when DM's name was getting thrown into the mix.
-
Hey Brian,
I saw Big Audio Dynamite, and certainly could have seen Joe Strummer.
What other Clash member would you want to see?
Rhett

sweetcell: could be a sign of addiction?! j/k
guilty! hello, i'm sweetcell and i'm addicted to live music (group response: "welcome, sweetcell, have a $6 yuengling"). right now i'm at step 1: invoking a higher power to help distinguish between good and merely mediocre live shows. after that i move on to step #2, being able to appreciate music from bands that, through no fault of their own, happen to have sold more than 10,000 copies of their last album.
that being said: GB&Q tix still available...
-
Ah, screw it Sweetie. Just give in and enjoy yourself. ;)
Music is such sweet medicine for the soul.
-
I jumped on these as soon as I could too. Tickets for this show are still available but a thievery corp dj set sold out in less than an hour.
DC is an enigma of lameness. (bitter about not getting one of those thievery tix).
-
I bought tickets for myself when they went on sale. With the lack of a full US tour and the NYC sellout I'm expecting the DC show to also sell out though it may take a bit longer unfortunately. I picked up the album and think it's really great. I'm def. looking forward to this show!
-
So who else is going?
-
going.
-
Going! This record is way cool and looking forward to seeing it done live.
-
anyone know if danger mouse will be there?

He's not, he only produced the record. Plus, he's in studio with Cee-Lo recording or finishing the new Gnarls album.
-
anyone know if danger mouse will be there?
Yeah ... one of the girls in the string quartet sprained her wrist, so he's going to jump in!
-
Anyone know anything about Trixie Little and the Evil Hate Monkey? Worth showing up early for?
-
check the other tread... they are apparently a acrobatic burlesque act from Charm City... could be like watching a grown live action cartoon or not...
-
Awesome show! I certainly hope they keep this project going as the two songs in the encore indicate this groups has more greatness in them. Only wish they drawn out some more of the songs with more dub type jams and it seemed to me as there was plenty up rock lurking in the shadows..
-
wow. paul simonen is the fucking coolest.
nice mix of dub grooves from the right side and melody and songcraft from the left. Felt like a band and not an all-star team. Never wanted or expected to hear songs from their old bands (although guns of brixton wouldn't have sucked). pretty restrained for the most part but very focused and well done.
hey its paul simonen honey! holy shit. i mean seriously, is that the coolest guy ever to grace the 9:30 stage?

Agreed on all points.

Maybe they only did "Guns of Brixton" in England. Damon did play a bit of Blur's "Intermission" on the piano.
However, they did not launch into "Sunday, Sunday."
I really liked the opening act. Gymnasts are the most amazing athletes. Very entertaining.
Brian
P.S. And thanks for everyone's help. I did get back onto the Metro in plenty of time to get back to Pennsylvania.
-
Man, I shouldn't have slept on tickets for this one. It's on NPR's All Songs Considered so I'll catch it there.
-
They killed it! The songs are much, much better in a live setting...they really brought the songs to life. Possibly the best show so far this year!
-
I didn't have a ticket and got one for face value without any problem. Very glad I caught this show. I have to admit I was starstruck by Paul, so much so that I hung out afterwards and got him to sign my ticket stub. There are some people who are legends, and seeing him on that stage made me appreciate him even more. He was the coolest. Boy were we lucky to get that show...thank you Seth.
-
...who was that fat dude who came out at the end?
-
Will have to agree with what Mobius said about Paul, no one wears a pork pie hat with more style then him. I was standing nearish the stage right in front of him and owed the stage like he's never been off it for all these many years. He is in the words of Inspiral Carpets "Cool as Fuck"
Watching Damon with his little shit eating grin over how much fun he was having performing.
The band is playing cohesively and clearily well rehearsed considering the albums was recorded in 2005, in part due to the second keyboard player having to learn and in fill in for many of Damon's parts from the album. I suspect as the band tours more they'll loose up a bit extend and or experiment with the songs. The bit where Damon looped his recorder indicates to me that band is going to explore what they can do with them in a live setting and I would would think that Simon Togg is ready to do a little "shredding".
Even if TGTBATQ doesn't last I hope that it prompts Simonon to pull his own dub oriented group together
-
I can't find the quote right now but recently Damon said they plan on recording again in September. I agree that the live shows will only make the new music they produce better.
Albarn's working on an opera with Jamie Hewitt which I think will premiere soon.
If I had to guess, after the current "The Good, The Bad and The Queen" touring is over, he'll be working on a new Blur record this summer. Possibly with Graham Coxon. One can hope.
Brian
-
i dunno... that glimmer in Damon's eye last night indicates he's having a whole lot of fun playing with this band... me think Blur is a bit past their sell-by date for the time being.
-
I just wish he'd use Tony Allen a lot more. It's like having Ladainian Tomlinson and using him as a decoy.
...or keeping Kevin Durant on the bench (in honor of the start of NCAAs.)
Brian
-
no i agree on tony allen being a bit under used at this point... the band really caught on fire when he got to rock out

Agreed. I can live without Blur if Damon keeps things this interesting with his other projects. What a fantastic show.
-
Show was great... loved Paul on bass.. a guy who is one with the instrument...
So, dumb question, as to only placate a friend... what was the name of the burlesque group that opened for them?

One of your fellow forum members wasn't as impressed by this show as the rest of you were:
The Good, the Bad and the Queen
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Good, the Bad and the Queen's sold-out show at the 9:30 club on Wednesday was a pop concert, sure, but it felt more like a chance to glimpse a one-off of British pop royalty (Blur's Damon Albarn), uber-royalty (Paul Simonon of the Clash), Afrobeat legend (Tony Allen of Africa 70) and a consummate guitarist (Simon Tong of the Verve). And although the set of spectral dub-pop was entertaining, it never rose above the nagging sense that the crowd was applauding individual personas more than group performance.
A top-hatted female string quartet preceded the top-hatted Albarn, who proceeded to lead GBQ (a default moniker -- officially, the group has no name) through its album with a faintly academic air that wasn't so much short on warmth as simply dispensingwith frivolity. Simonon elicited the most delight from the crowd -- which mostly looked too young to have seen the Clash live -- and he seemed to strain against the tether of his huge, loping bass lines, slinging himself side to side.
After previous no-shows, Rex Sexsmith made it up to the crowd at Jammin' Java. (By Suzanne Plunkett -- Associated Press)

Ringleader Albarn appeared delighted to be performing his mind-movies about life in a disconnected, modern London. Aptly, the hour-long set's highlights were the inward-looking tunes: the distended "Behind the Sun" and the weary pair "A Soldier's Tale" and "Green Fields." Better still was "Three Changes," which provided much more tension and angularity (especially from Tong and Allen) than the limp rave-up on the project's title track.
The encore did not bring the hoped-for version of the Clash's "Guns of Brixton," which reportedly was played at some British dates, but rather two negligible extras -- a fitting encapsulation of a night of major stars making minor music.
