In May, Rolling Stone e-mailed thousands of readers and asked them to vote on their favorite live act; the only restriction was that the artist had to have toured in the last few years. We got more than 28,000 responses. So here you go -- the twenty greatest live acts in the world, as named by [Rolling Stone Readers]!
http://www.rollingstone.com/features/featuregen.asp?pid=1713 (http://www.rollingstone.com/features/featuregen.asp?pid=1713)
1. U2
2. Radiohead
3. Bon Jovi
4. Dave Matthews Band
5. Tori Amos
6. Phis
7. Metallica
8. PJ Harvey
9. Nine Inch Nails
10. Guns and Roses
11. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
12. Pearl Jam
13. Bob Dylan
14. Tool
15. Prince
16. Widespread Panic
17. The Roots
18. The Red Hot Chili Peppers
19. No Doubt
20. The Rolling Stones
---------------------------------
Feel free to discuss amongst yourselves.
-
I have seen two on the list (Tori Amos and Red Hot Chili Peppers). They both sucked. We Americans have crap taste. This list is nonsense. In terms of mainstream rock acts, where at least is Neil Young?
-
I have only seen 2 of those bands live, what would I know about live music?
Any list where BonJovi is #3 isnt going to be a good list.
I would wager that Becks Odelay tour would be better than most of those other live acts.
-
Ah Rhett, we have Tori amos in common....
She was alright live. But not really anything spectacular or out of the ordinary.
Radiohead were good. Not top 20 good though.
-
I've seen most of the acts on the list
1. U2
2. Radiohead
4. Dave Matthews Band
5. Tori Amos
6. Phish
7. Metallica
8. PJ Harvey
9. Nine Inch Nails
10. Guns and Roses
11. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
12. Pearl Jam
13. Bob Dylan
14. Tool
17. The Roots
18. The Red Hot Chili Peppers
19. No Doubt
20. The Rolling Stones
and if I had to rank them, U2 would still be at the top, Tori Amos, Phish and Metallica would be way down, and No Doubt and the Chili Peppers would be way up.
-
Top 20 concerts you bring binoculars to is more like it.
-
I haven't seen even one of those bands in the last 8 years. So what the hell would they want my opinion for....
I'm not sure how I'd answer -- just in the last year, hmmm. I know it's crazy, but Cheap Trick is fantastic. Sleater-Kinney would be in the top five, along with Foo Fighters (I got to see them at Black Cat, though the Patriot Center show kicked too), Soundtrack of our Lives, Sloan, Guided by Voices.
-
I've seen 2 of these bands:
Dave Matthews - most painful, boring show I've ever endured. Wasn't even worth the free sky box tickets I had.
Pearl Jam - biased because I'm a big fan, but I think they put on a great show. 3.5 hours at State College in May was the best I've seen them.
-
Where's Jane's Addiction???
-
. . . . . and The White Stripes . . .
-
in the wastebin of history. Not a band that has or will stand the test of time.

Them's fighting words.
How long is the test of time? They're already going over 20 years.

who did you say?
Are they the ones that had a hit with sweet jane?
-
I liked them in 1988 and saw them a couple of times but can't imagine having to sit through one of their shows today. There are bands that I liked in 1988 that I would enjoy seeing today.. I guess it's just my own personal test of time.
Perry Farrell is just a big dork geek idiot.

No. That was the Velvet Underground (you're doing a hell of a Mankie, BTW)

Why thankyou.....
No I meant that Canadian band that covered it, recorded it in a church, that must have been them.

No! heroin is so passe!

Although Gay Gary does sound like a super name for a comic book hero...
-
It was Cowboy Junkies that covered "Sweet Jane"
Personally, while parts of that list are pretty appalling overall, I am surprised and pleased to see PJ Harvey at number 8, she is a captivating performer and very deserving of recognition. Also The Roots certainly deserve to be on the list. I'm no hip-hop fan, but they put on a great show.
I don't know how Guns 'n Roses made it on there. They haven't toured or recorded in years. That farce Axel put together last year definitely doesn't count.
-
Thanks Twan girl, But I was just kidding.....

I didnt know that Mott the Hoople and Phish had covered the song as well.....
-
Phish played the entire Loaded album at a halloween show once. They suck, but they have good taste.

I agree

Thank god I can say that I have no idea whether Phish suck or not. Except for that one time I saw them on Saturday Night Live (an odd venue indeed).

I saw it as well..... I was thinking "why does this bunch of tossers sound so much like the greatful dead?"
I had no idea who they were till after the song finished.
-
well when ben and jerry's names an ice cream flavor after you, you know you've hit the big time. don't see no andrew wk flavors, bucko.

So from what I can tell, a couple of people who still watch Saturday Night Live don't like Phish. Makes me like them even more. :D

I think
what people who watch SnL?
means you are asking which people were watching snl
what, people who watch snl?
would mean, what was I referring to when i said makes me like them even more
-
Johnny Depp=40. I was shocked to hear this, I guess I forget how old I myself am.
Gary Louris=48 Don't know if I would have guessed that high

this list once again shows how much rolling stone has gone downhill. though i am in complete agreement about u2.

Or Tutti Frutti and Nuts White Chocolate?

Shocking revelation: Phish fans are anti-semites! I went to see Oysterhead (cause as a bass player it's my solumn duty to worship Mr. Claypool), and although the show was very much sold out, the venue was 90% empty for the opening act . . . a Klesmer Band!
Oh, and that Phish guy is one greedy fuck. He had two musicians more talented than him onstage and they got maybe a solo each.
-

It reminds me of Our Band Could Be Your Life, where seemingly every band in the book opens for PiL and has a crap experience doing so.
Another question, if hippies are supposed to be all natural, why do so many of them smoke cigarettes? Seems to kinda go against their hemp and birkenstock lifestyle.
-
I've seen most of those top 20 bands (well, 14) and U2 and Radiohead would be my top 2 (major bias on Radiohead though, i would love them no matter what) The rest is crap, sans Metallica before 1990. Chemical Brothers, Sunny Day Real Estate and The White Stripes are all better than Phish!!! jeepers.
-
I wonder if the number of bands you have seen on this list would be inversely propotional to your score on the hipness quiz.
-
maybe since i dont like more then half the bands on the list and perfer cheap concerts where i can see the fuckin band but my opinion doesn't count. i would have said afi.
-

How so?
-
The bands on the list seem to be very, very mainstream, and are a reflection of the readers of a very, very mainstream music magazine (Rolling Stone).
Doesn't being/liking the mainstream equate to being not hip?

That's what I was afraid you meant but wanted to make sure before I corrected you.
If you have to use a book to tell you what's hip, then, by definition, you're not hip at all. By the time that book went to press, it was already unhip.
The vast majority of those bands I saw when I was a teenager back in Hollywood at places no bigger than the 9:30 club. Just because they reached some sort of popularity, it's no longer hip to like them? Their live shows aren't great anymore? That's a load of bollocks and you know it.
If you continue to tell enough people how great alt-country is, you'd best be careful, one or two might listen to you and tell someone else. Then you (and it) won't be hip? Come on...
I think you'd have been keenly aware of or knowledgeable about the latest trends or developments if you would have predicted the success of u2's "All that you can't...." considering their previous lack of success with Zooropa and Pop. And that live show, well it was the greatest live show I've seen in the last 5 years, whether its hip to like them or not.
-
I wasn't saying it was good or bad to be hip or unhip, or to be mainstream or non-mainstream.
Isn't one of the reasons such magazines as Rolling Stone, Details, Maxim, etc exist so that their readers can find out what is hip?
I'm not saying U2 doesn't put on a great show or anything like that. I'm just saying that I though being "hip" was in part based on deliberately liking stuff that that is obscure, and shunning that which the masses likes.
For the record, I failed the hipster quiz too.
-
Wilco's playing Constitution Hall tonight. I think someone let the alt country cat out of the bag....
-
With all of their tape loops going, they hardly resemble anything country anymore.

With all of his wrinkles, Johnny Cash doesn't resemble Johnny Cash anymore.
-
If anyone likes or dislikes anything based on whether other people like it or not. you truly suck and are definitely NOT hip.
-
So are you implying that being HIP is a good thing to be?

OK pal, let me spell it out for ya. I'm super duper hip. I'm so hip I got a hip replacement because I was to hippy. That hipster handbook, well it's all about me and my hipness. I don't just follow, I follow the lastest and most vapid of youth trends that you'll totaly recognize me at you kid's softball game with my vespa that I welded to a Harly and coverd in sunglasses as totem to my everexpanding power of hipness. So, my point is that uh.. I realy have nothing to say. Hi.

well duh....you are only hip if you can be hip without looking like you're trying to be hip.
Come on Rhett, didn't you go to high school?
-
I went to a redneck high school. Anybody who even hinted at being "hip" was automatically a fag.

No Robert Randolph and the Family Band?
No Steve Earle?
No Old 97's?
This list blows.
I'd rather see some dude playing a washboard with Hippie Sticks than Phish. Oh wait, same thing, my bad.
-

-
I was not hip, a redneck or a fag in high school. I was a "brain" (hey when you go to a redneck school there's not that much competition), a wannabe athlete, and a shy, social nobody.
Not much has changed, except I'm now somewhere where there are actually a lot of "brains", leaving me to be a non-brain. And I'm happy about being a social nobody instead of being upset by the fact.
And you? How was the Grand Canyon anyway?

hmmm, i really dont know. is it? Huey Lewis told me it was hip to be square. is he to blame for all of this?
-

Exceeded my expectations. Great weather -- low 80's and zero humidity on the South Rim. Much hotter at the bottom of course. Took a nice 20 mile day hike from the rim to the river and back -- park regulations be damned. We started down the South Kaibab at 6:30 am and made it to the river about 9:15, where it was already 100 degrees. Walked along the river for awhile and then we ascended the Bright Angel at about 10-10:30, making it back to the top a little after 3:00.
I'd definitely go again, perhaps in the fall.
-
And I've got the photo to prove it!
