I realize that there is about a zero chance of a place like this exisiting, but is the a bar around the Patriot Center where I can have a few beers before the Beck show?
I haven't been to a show at the PC since '93 and have no real recollection of the surrounding area.
I'm meeting folks from Baltimore for the show and was wondering if there woud be a better meeting place than the venue parking lot.
I understand that this is a suburban/academic area, but thought I'd ask anyway.

Years ago I used to do shows at some place called Fat Tuesdays Raw Bar that I think is pretty close to across the street from the Patriot center. 10673 Braddock Rd is the location.
-
Please don't drive if you are having a "few" beers.

TGI Fridays
-
i'd like to know this too..

There's a Hooters in Fairfax.

Dear Xavier:
You don't have to worry, I'm not driving.
I also don't plan on becoming intoxicated, but I guess that's neither here nor there.
I appreciate your concern, though.

Fat Tuesdays (http://www.fatsfairfax.com) is right across Braddock Rd from the Patriot Center.
There is also a place called Brion's Grille, but they are pretty much assholes -- or at least they used to be.
-
Be sure to call it Fat Tuesdays Raw Bar as Fat Tuesdays is some place in DC and different owners (and supposedly pissed at this place).
It was a dive bar when I would go there, the bathrooms were always 1-2 inches of liquid on the floor and a band I was working with got busted in the parking lot (for doing what someone is complaining about not being able to do in the 9:30). Interesting place.

Everytime I go to a Patriot Center show I go to Fat tuesdays. I alway park there and a good buzz and walk over to the patriot center that way i dont have to wait in traffic getting out of the parking lot and if i want I can go back to the bar after the show. Happy hour isnt to bad there either so you can get drunk for pretty cheap. I'll be there before the Foo Fighters.

Sounds like a winner to me.
Two more questions:
#1 - Can we park at Fat Tuesdays (and would we want to)?
#2 - What time do you all expect Beck to hit the stage? I know doors are at 6:30 and Whirlwind Heat has to go on. I was thinking somewhere in the Ballpark fo 9?
Thanks for all the great feedback, by the way...

#1 Yes. It's in a strip mall, there is plenty of parking, and it's a very short walk to the show.
#2 Patriot Center shows seem to start pretty close to the time stated on the ticket.
-
I always park there and have never had a problem. Its safe, its in the back of university mall shopping center, in front theres a Giant so its not dangerous or anything. Shows at the Patriot Center usually end around 11 so I'd prolly go over around 830.

Hey I am going to this Beck show too, does anyone know if they sell beer at the Patriot Center? I can't remember.
Bye.

I believe they have at other concerts I've been to there.

last time i went to a concert at the Patriot Center they made you consume your beer in a "beer garden". a curtained off area on the concourse.
-
The beer is sold in a beer garden, its a pain in the ass. you have to stand in a line to get a wrist band then stand in a ling to get in the garden then stand in a line to buy the 7 dollar beer. Of course I do it everytime I go.

oh god I hate the beer gardens with a passion, a pain in the ass indeed.
I think I will hit up this Fat Tuesdays then before the show. Or I'll sneak a flask in with me. hehe.

Agreed. All the other bars suck. Not much to do in fairfax. TT's is the only spot.

there's kilroys on braddock just as u get off the beltway. its in shopping at 1st light as u get off beltway. way in back of lot. but youd be better off goign to the fat tuesdays so u dont hav to drive. fairfax cops dont eff around and are waiting to nail your ass bc u hav to take braddock where they lie in wait.

You should hand out this advice the next time you go to a NASCAR event.

How about Auld Shebeen? Kosmette enjoyed the Smithwicks they had on tap there recently...
-
Have you been to a NASCAR event? I don't recall them even selling beer at the races I've been to.

Can't say that I have. But there's other sources for information:
Martinsville Speedway will open its race season this week with a new policy, offering for the first time unlimited beer at track concessions but limiting how much fans can carry in coolers -- a signature of the circuit.

Interesting. I'm curious what kind of reaction this is going to get from the fans. Seems kind of weird though, limiting how much you can bring in, rather than just banning outside beer altogether.
