Anybody know set times, or read reviews of other shows that mention how long each band is playing?
-
I was wondering the same thing? I know the tickets are for 7:30 but I am not sure when the bands actually go on. Sonic Youth cancelled a couple of their performances last week for a family emergency but they have stated that they will be playing tonight.
-
Good show last night. Anyone know what the hell was up with the people in the front that Tweedy assaulted. I beleive he said something like "I'll kick you in the head motherfucker.....I'm not a monkey in a cage". I figured maybe there were a couple guys being assholes.

I thought it was a really good show, felt weird seeing both bands in a larger venue, but was still good, especially Wilco. Story I heard was that some guy had his back to the stage because his friend was trying to get a picture with Tweedy in the background. What pissed Tweedy off was that he kept trying to direct Tweedy where to stand while he was in the middle of singing Misunderstood. I am fairly sure they were going to finish with California Stars but Tweedy just walked off instead.
Oh and I thought it must be a cover, but that song they dedicated to Sonic Youth is actually a new Wilco song, called Kicking Television.
-
here's what happened: this one guy basically turned around and put his back to the stage and gave a peace sign, and his friend took a picture of him, obviously annoying Tweedy. then to make matters worse, they switched places and took another pic. tweedy's reaction was something along the lines of, "i'm not a monkey in the zoo, motherfucker." and a good point at that. the kicker of it was that the 2 guys had snuck down to the front from god knows where, had no business being there, and cost the crowd 2 songs (according to the setlist): Mountain Bed and California Stars.
-
I thought that dedication song was actually a Sonic Youth cover since I don't much SY material. It sounds nothing like anything else Wilco has done. For the most part I was really impress with the post YFH songs they played last night.
If the "monkey man" story is true I hope those dipshits didn't deprive me of a good song(Now I see they did). While they were at it they should have asked Jeff for an autograph while he was playing Sunken Treasure(which I though sounded fantastic). Someone pencil that in on the Unofficial Rules of Concert Etiquette. :D
-
The song Kicking Television was excellent. I was very impressed by Wilco's set.
-
So, setlist anyone?

Not in order off the top of my head I remember -
Poor Places
Reservations
Sunken Treasure
Misunderstood
Casino Queen
Kicking Television
Red Eyed and Blue
I Got You
Heavy Metal Drummer
I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
War On War
Jesus, etc.
I'm The Man Who Loves You
Via Chicago
We've Been Had - Uncle Tupelo
and a couple i did not recognize (new ones?)
-
Ah! We've Been Had is off of Anodyne! That's why I knew that song. Duh.
-
I think it was the curfew that cost the last two songs. Notice that they only took a break of about 12 seconds before the second encore and then finished at 11:00 on the nose. But the two guys posing in front of Tweedy while he sang were dipshits.
Wilco was definitely more alt- and less country last night. Sonic Youth were good, but it's just not sitting down music.

Somebody suggested the curfew to me as well, but I thought it was weird that he gestured to the guys, walked off and then the rest of the band kind of looked at each other for a minute before leaving.
Which reminds me, they also played Laminated Cat off of the Loose Fur album with Jim O'Rourke, that took up a lot of time.

more alt than country? very nice. because not a fan of country, but I am seeing them on Thursday in Milkwaukee w/ Fountains of Wayne. Hope they can rock just a wee bit.

I don't think any of the songs off of Summerteeth or YHF could be considered anything remotely close to country.

You mean Not for the Seasons? Pretentious titles aside, that's great song that's been in their set for quite a while. Man, if only they would play You Were Wrong, off that album. That song is just devistating.

definitely a great show.

Perhaps, but I think Wilco were more Sonic Youth-y last night than the last two times I saw them, which were both post-YHF.
-
Wow, that's interesting. Wish I was catching them at Bumbershoot, but we'll be on the plane back home the day they play.

I am pretty sure it is the first track on Loose Fur, and it is listed on the Drag City website (and other places) as Laminated Cat but it is on their set lists as not for the season.

it also happened to be by FAR the worst part of the set. 10 mintues of feedback with o'rourke wiggling around like a 12 year old air-guitaring in his bedroom is not what i came to see. john (bass player) and leroy (keys/guitar) looked just as horrendously bored as the rest of the audience.

So you think Jeff lets Jim bang his wife too?
-
anyone have a Sonic Youth setlist? I'm curious to know what they played. Thanks.

That's WETA ch 26 for DC proper folks.
-
Not sure if 26 could squeeze it into their schedule, what with all the Suze Orman infomercials they run

with all of thier songs, seems like they would vary thier setlist a little more. most of the same stuff they played when i saw them last. and if they EVER played a show w/o Teenage Riot and i was there....i wouldve killed them.

well isn't part of Sonic Youth's deal that they tune their guitars some bizarre way each album, making it more difficult to go back to old material? I know that was the case in the early years, I dunno how true that is now, but it does seem like they tend to favor material from whatever the new album is.
Also, I wonder if Wilco has gotten tired of the YHF stuff yet? They've been playing it seemingly nonstop for a couple years now.

That was my issue with their set. I understand playing songs from the new album, but clearly this show was geared toward older fans (Constitution Hall, opening for Wilco), so having a Silver Rocket or a Teenage Boots would've been nice.

Anyone read the post review of the concert?
The reviewer was clearly a big SY fan, and not to much of a Wilco supporter. While this was not the best Wilco show ever, I think it was far from the terrible performance the reviewer made it out to be. The best for me so far was when they played the Rechter Theatre.

1st Class Sonic Youth Breaks Sound Barrier
Wednesday, July 2, 2003; Page C05
Despite being laughably second-billed to Wilco, the venerable New York City band Sonic Youth sizzled Constitution Hall on Monday night, roaring through 70 minutes of sublime material that made the headliners sound rather anemic in comparison.
Most of the crowd was still filing in when the quintet (which now includes multi-instrumentalist Jim O'Rourke) opened with the new "Peace Attack," an anti-Bush screed that led into a succession of songs from "Murray Street," the band's accomplished album released last summer. The addition of O'Rourke -- who alternated between guitar and bass -- has opened three-guitar vistas for the band, resulting in subtly cascading sheets of melody in "The Empty Page" and a galvanizing "Rain on Tin," where three giddy, pealing riffs collapsed in a howling art-punk heap. Throw in Kim Gordon's trailer-park noir vocals on "Plastic Sun" and "Drunken Butterfly," Lee Ranaldo's snippy "Skip Tracer," a snarling "(I Got A) Catholic Block" and a version of their latest single, "Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream," and Sonic Youth left little doubt that the band is as vital and ceaselessly inventive as when it began disassembling rock notions 20 years back.
Wilco's stage setup -- background films, gadgetry, multiple keyboards and a center spotlight for leader Jeff Tweedy -- portended the band's fussy, strung-out sound, which veered from uplifting to yawn-stifling, often in the same song. Over a wide-ranging whorl of new and old material, Tweedy's voice and guitar were the only Wilco constant, sashaying through "Jesus, Etc." and "Via Chicago," dropping the country-rock hammer on "Casino Queen" and "I Got You" and dueting with O'Rourke on a version of Loose Fur's "Laminated Cat." Still, too many numbers were cluttered with the kind of useless canned blips and keyboard noodles that prove Wilco is still far too undisciplined to be the kind of great live act its supporters claim it is.

Once again the Post music writers prove to be morons. Their review of the Jayhawks a couple of days ago was way off too, including misquoting Gary Louris for the benefit of the story.
I bet the post writer was the guy taking pictures that pissed off Tweedy.
