As a sort of follow on to the "Has all the great music already been created?"
I knew that trying to get ones name out in already crowded indie power pop field and selling to it's tiny market was hard, but not this tough.
John Hoskinson has put out one of the best CDs I've bought in the last six months. But despite solid reviews from Pop Matters Press, Popmatters and a Four Star review in Uncut magazine and being available from Not Lame, etc, John has only sold 475 copies of this excellent collection of songs after 14 months of being available.
John's music isn't trendy or groundbreaking, but neither was Elliot Smith's who serves as a great point of reference. It's the kind of CD one can listen to on Sunday morning or marvel when a track gets played in shuffle mode on an MP3 player. Think Crowded House, Ron Sexsmith, The Housemartins...
In order to help John reach his goal of selling 500 copies and get the Off-Band Taco Seasoning award, see his website for full explanation (http://www.johnhoskinson.com/help/). I've decided to donate $10 for each CD sold to OXFAM American. I will also sweeten the donation for each CD that's sold based on my refferal. John will setup sometime next week a special page in order to track those referrals, but in the meantime I will handle on the honor system anyone who wants to order the CD before then.

As difficult as it was sitting down and spending the past several weeks revisiting the countless new releases I received in 2004, it only speaks to a wonderful and thriving O.C. music scene. Selecting the 10 best releases of the year was just short of impossible.
1. John Hoskinson, "Miscellaneous Heathen" (independent) - With the possible exception of the latest titles by U2 and Snow Patrol, no other 2004 release has enjoyed as much time in my player this year as the debut of John Hoskinson. Armed with a voice that draws natural comparisons to Neil Finn, Hoskinson has a knack for writing instantly memorable songs and finding the right mix of supporting players to render those tunes perfectly. Well, I was going to buy one but how can I now that it has the OC taint? Besides, I don't listen to any group that doesn't have at least one car or retail chain commercial on its resume.

Not bad. I bought one. Thanks for the recommendation. This should make a nice mix with the new Morcheeba I bought last week and the old Massive Attack and Portishead.

Got an update from John... He has sold 23 copies of the CD meaning at least a $250 donation will be made to OXFAM.
