Best Shows thus far this year?
Best Albums thus far?
I'll have to ponder the albums category, but best shows go to Rollins Band and Paul Weller.
-
Best show a tie between Pernice Brothers and the most recent Slobberbone. Some people thought my performance with the mime was pretty good too.
Best album the Jayhawks with the Pernice Brothers a close second...though we've only bought a handful of 2003 releases
-
best shows The Delgados and The Cynics
best album... have they released anything new worth listening to? idlewild doesn't really count does it? the new pronographers was a great download from emusic and the pernice brothers turned my head on first listens.
-
Absolutely, hands down best show - Rollins Band. Chills were going down my spine, it was so great.
And this is from someone who's seen thousands of bands in my life.
-
there have been a few good shows....
Supergrass/the coral
Delgados
Cinerama
Idlewild (that was this year, right)
as for releases...
that is harder they all seem to be last year.
best re-release was Take no prisoners the Lou Reed live album.
Perhaps Tyde Twice
I am not sure about Dandy Warhols welcome to the monkeyhouse yet....

Wow,GGW, I usually agree with your musical assessments, but I don't hear this comparison at all.The Tyde use way more instrumentation and effects and have more of a 60's vibe, whereas the Strokes are pretty straight forward garage rock for the most part. What's anybody eles think about this comparison?
-
Well there is a strokeish element to blood brothers. I guess its partly due to the vocals.
And that is the best song on the album..... the rest of the album is mostly more flakey psychadelia in the brian Jonestown mould....
I did originally state that it reminded me of the Lloyd Cole BJM and the strokes.
-
Markie played me some of the Tyde. Sounded pretty decent. Didn't remind me of the Strokes.
How do y'all think the Tyde stacks up against Beachwood Sparks?

Like I said, I've only heard one song -- Blood Brothers -- and it's got the same vocal effects as The Strokes. The first couple of times I heard the song, I thought perhaps The Strokes actually made a second album.
I'll track down the Tyde CD and give the whole thing a listen.
-
I would never guess that the Tyde and the beechwood sparks shared members....
the sparks are way twangy for my liking.

I think the first album, once is better than the second album, twice.....

oh and Sub Pop is pretty clearly the label of the year, until someone points out a better choice

I havent really listened to much, but from what I heard, not so much.
I like the guys effete voice, but I like his harmonies/duets with Rilo Kileys singer more and I love the mild electronica, beep beep plinkiness, takes me back to the pet shop boys.........
-
I think that flaming lips show is still giving fantastic hallucinations....
-
favorite show of the year, no, so far favorite show of my entire life was the rollins band with keith morris. favorite album of the year so far is the new suicide machines
-
I will add the Rosie Thomas, James Mercer, Iron and Wine (all on Subpop) show at Iota to the best shows list. They are listed in my order of preference.

Does that mean you will be changing your board name?
"Sub Pop" would be a more manly moniker than "Jadetree"

yeah, went to the show. really enjoyed it, as they played a good deal off of "know by heart." i don't know, the new one doesn't sound like they are really in it anymore. maybe it was because i was listening to it at work, but nothing in the album really excited me or kept me wanting to listen to it. their previous albums always had some interesting vocal melody or chord progressions, but this one just seemed like uninteresting background music. i blame it on andrew kenny for going to graduate school in nyc.
-
I like the name, a bit dupek though, isnt it?

I have only just started listening to American Analog Set but I really like the second track on the new album, probably because I really liked it at the show.
-

Henry Rollins is a corporate whore and a disgrace to the punk rock community.

Are you really? Did you enjoy her other albums? Just trying to get a baseline here.... I have only heard the 30 second snippets of each song on the album from the website, and on first listen it was not inspiring.
Or are you pulling our legs?!?

Bugger, that is really annoying...
Right I am going to try and stick to being a coldplay fan.

I think you'll like it.As for the B/sparks comparisons, some same members, entirely different musical genre.B/sparks are much more in the alt/country vein whereas Tyde are much more psych poppy.

Saw her last night on one of the late night talk shows and if that song is any indication,I'll be steering clear of the new one.Without a doubt, she did still look good though, for what it's worth.

Thought so, but I haven't gotten used to the various 'voices' on the boards yet. 'Cuz I was under the impression you were the resident anti-hipster down home boy.
Only made worse by y'all changing your Board names in this thread!!

I'd get your ears checked. Grandaddy turned in the dullest album this side of Nada Surf. Oh and SFA, but I mean shit, they've been off their game for a while.

Hipsters must seem anti-hipster, by definition. Rhett plays the game very well.
Where did Henry Dark go?

so Mjnova I bet you like the latest Radiohead, Blur and White Stripes too?
You seem to have the complete opposite middle age rock tastes to me. I really like rings around the world, I think it is SFA's best.

Actually you might be correct there. I dont think I have been serious once in my life.
But i think that is GGW's line. He is the one who looks like McEnroe.

Albums:
Grandaddy 'Sumday'
Hidden Cameras 'Smell of Our Own'
Yeah Yeah Yeahs 'Fever to Tell'
Notwist 'Neon Golden'
Dandy Warhols 'Monkey House'
Best Shows:
Polyphonic Spree

why thank you for editing my post. it's nice to know that i can take my music cues from a student at university of maryland, and someone who is obviously the paragon of music taste and knowledge. nevertheless, i do find the new grandaddy to be quite good and interesting. this album is quite a step up from "sophtware slump."
-
not sure about albums yet, but my favorite shows so far, in random order, were:
Mission of Burma
Supersuckers w/ The Forty-Fives & Throw Rag
Television
The Mooney Suzuki
The Soundtrack of Our Lives
Joe Jackson
Drive-By Truckers w/ Immortal Lee County Killers
The Flaming Lips
and, I have to admit, David Lee Roth
-
I should also add the free show Ricky Skaggs did at Towson Borders to my best show list.

Been getting alot of good music released lateley and thought i'd share, see
if any of you all dig these too,or not. So,what do y'all think of these? If
you have any questions on any of them, feel free to ask and i'll answer to
the best of my ability.so here goes, these have really been getting heavy
rotation lately:The Tyde-Twice...BJM-Spacegirl....Bottom of the Hudson-the omaha
record....elefant-sunlight makes me paranoid...new pornograhers-electric
version....Caesars-39 minutes of bliss...outrageous cherry-supernatural
equinox...rainer maria-long knives drawn....johnny cash-the man comes
around..stratford 4-love and distortion ...warlocks -phoenix I highly
recommend any of these.
.Now some that are good but somewhat disapointing....
eels-shootennanny...grandaddy-sumday...Telepathic butterflies-self
titled...Supersuckers-mothafuckers be trippin...Cramps-fiends of dope
island...spiritualized-amazing grace...Britta Phillips and Dean wareham(from
Luna)...alaska-emotions...portistatic-summer of the shark...yo la
tengo-summer sun...starlight mints-built on squares...white light
motorcade...lou reed-the raven... All of these are good, they've just put
out better records in the past or are capable of much more IMHO.So,do you guys
listen to any of this stuff?Do you like/dislike any of them.i'd apprecaite
some feedback if you see fit.I'd say anything above is a welcome addition to
a music collection.Sparks

After listening to the album, I'm kinda in agreement with you. I don't think it's bad, but it's certainly not nearly as strong as Know By Heart.
Continuous Hit Music was a poor choice for the opening track I think. But I very much enjoy Hard To Find. I'll have to give the album a couple more listens -- perhaps it will grow on me.

Nah. Songs about drunken robots vs. an album where the first half all sounds exactly the same? Not much of a contest. I brought Sophtware Slump in to work today. It's still amazing.
TV, Birma and Joe Jackson were all excellent live (shocking, a college student listening to music from before his time) and Ricky Skaggs @ MD I think was last year, but still an excellent show.

Shows:
AmAnSet and Calla (f that first band) at the Black Cat
Mission Of Burma
The Sea and Cake (they actually rocked)
Spiritualized (I really liked the stripped down set, pure rock and roll fun)
I know there are more, but too many shows this year...
Albums:
AmAnSet - This did grow on me. I have to say this is the first one that I find that I had to play loud to really enjoy. These are more "rock" than the earlier works (I have been into them from the start).
Bardo Pond - Forget the name of their new one, but wow, really cool. Flows well, noisy, fun album.
The Hidden Hand - This is quite cool, Wino still rocks out well.
Disappointing Albums:
Blur - It is missing something.
Massive Attack - Again, missing 1/3 it doesn't work well
Radiohead - Back to rock? Nah, bland songs, nothing that great here.
-
Am I the only one who thinks Grandaddy sounds awfully like Alan Parsons?
Granted, I've only heard the single, but it was so uninspiring.

Most folks make comparisons to ELO, but I'm so incredibly frightened of Jeff Lynne's hair that I've never listen to any ELO.
