OK, we're excited. Who's coming?
-
I plan on it. I also plan on requesting "Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth."
I'm glad you don't know what I look like.

I'm going....Wondering what time I should arrive in order to ensure entry. I'm guessing this show will be an easy sellout.
Care to comment Redsock?

Do I know you? That said, I'm pretty sure it'll be easy to spot the guy requesting Dandy Warhols songs.

Brian Jonestown Massacre at the DC9 Thurs 8/4
-
I am excited as well. I'll be there early to ensure a good view of the BJM antics and to check out both of the openers - especially The Quarter After who put out a really good jangle pop record this year.
-
I can't really speak to when you need to get there. Doors open at 8 (in a perfect world). I don't want folks to have to come camp out before then, but I know some people come early. I also don't want to assume it will be a sell-out, but I imagine it will sell quite well. I can't really promise anyone a guranteed in (I've gotten a few PMs about this, sorry). I'd like to give something out to the 930 boardies, so i'll try to think of something. I just really don't want to open anything up to anyone. and no, I'm not an elitist.
Anyone notice the show was mentioned in the paper sunday, but no mention of BigYawn. Lack of respect I tell you.

Not officially. Another boardie pointed out you and Jaguar at the documentary viewing.
redsock - Crowd genarally hangs in the bar. Not kosher?

I'm sorry, I believe you (or whoever pointed me out, to be more accurate) are mistaken. I wasn't in attendance at the documentary viewing.

What is the chance of all this being done by midnight so I can take Metro?

I'd say not good...but redsock certainly knows better. When the Lucksmiths came, they didn't go on until 11:45, which did not please me on a Tuesday night...they had three openers, so that may make a difference.
-

BJM should hopefully go on somwtime soon after 11. But the official time of their set is "11 until he's finished." Which I bet will be after 12. Well after if he is in the groove, which, for our sakes, I hope he is.
And this is one of those shows where going downstairs to the bar could cost you. But as long as your hand is stamped, it should be fine.
-
Here's an idea of what they've been playing according to some setlists from this tour.It looks to be at least 2 hours barring any unforeseen circumstances: Whoever You Are
Hide and Seek
Let Me Stand Next To Your Flower
Nailing Honey To The Bee
Nevertheless
This Is Why You Love Me
When Jokers Attack (extended jam)
Who?
Servo
Straight Up And Down
Swallowtail
-
show was also mentioned in Music Notes in the August On Tap, with a thing on BigYawn as well.
-
2 fucking mentions of BJM in the Express today, and not one of them mentions BigYawn. I'm the one who sent them the damn press release, there wouldn't be a fucking BJM show today in DC if it wasn't for me. Fucking pathetic, this city's press refuses to cover the local angle regarding the DC music scene. I'm glad the show got the press, but it's appaling we didn't get so much as a mention.
-
Is it customary to mention the promoter when writing about an upcoming gig?

In part because of a recent documentary, "Dig!," Brian Jonestown Massacre mainstay Anton Newcombe has a reputation as a wild man. The California band's neopsychedelic rock, however, is not such a crazy trip. The 38 songs compiled on "Tepid Peppermint Wonderland: A Retrospective" validate the two-CD set's title. "Tepid" is a harsh verdict on the Massacre's synthesis of circa 1966 Byrds and circa 1967 Rolling Stones, but, hey -- they said it, not me.
The collection includes such attention-getting titles as "Prozac vs. Heroin" and "Not if You Were the Last Dandy on Earth," a reference to the Massacre's supposed feud with the Dandy Warhols. The music, however, is more of a giggle than a shock. Connoisseurs of the period that inspired most of the Massacre's style will be amused that the band draws so heavily on "Their Satanic Majesties Request," the '60s Stones album that Stones diehards tend not to like. Newcombe and his ever-shifting crew of collaborators also borrow from the rootsier Stones, the Velvet Underground and -- just to prove that they didn't sleep through the '80s -- the Cure. Whatever its sources, the group's woozy mid-tempo rock is reliably skillful, melodic and secondhand.

Yeah, don't you write for them? Someone needs to learn to cover all the details over there.

I don't recall seeing KCRW mentioned in any articles about the Pixies when they were in town.

I'm not saying any time should be spent saying what the sponsor is all about, but if the name of the event is "KCRW presents the Pixies", I'd think, just as a courtesy, it'd be listed as "KCRW presents the Pixies," and not "the Pixies."
-

Then how did you know it was set up by KCRW?
Personally I think Bigyawn should be grateful that the band made the listings at all. They didn't the last cople of times they were in town. I am sure that is all down to bigyawns excellent promotional work.

Of course we're happy. But we could use, and in this case were really hoping for, the press. For future events, not for eprsonal gratification.

I doubt the average person gives a shite who promoted the band that they are about to see. I am sure DC9 willl be impressed if you get a good turnout and all goes well.
Your best chance of promoting bigyawn is the large bigyawn backdrop the band will be performing in front of tonight and the waitresses in breast exposing bigyawn T-shirts handing out drinks on bigyawn coasters.......

Perhaps it "should" be, but I don't believe that is the practice.
Look at the Post's 9:30 listings and note that it lists Talib Kweli and DJ Z-Trip but says nothing of Miller Genuine Draft or Playstation Dual Play.

Maybe b/c no one gives out free stuff anymore...
I think I'm out. Sorry, I've missed many BY events (3 hours sleep = planning annihiltion of my neighbor).

Big difference between us and KCRW. bigger difference between us and major Breweries. We are a locally-owned tiny promotional/online company that have our name included in all the printed material about this show. All DC9 ads, all posters and flyers for the show. From a journalistic angle, particularly a local one, mentioning who was sponsoring the show seems like a worthwhile thing. And a relevant thing. Thatâ??s all Iâ??m saying.

i agree, it would work well as part of a local story on the show ... totally different than mentioning the liquor company sponsoring a citizen cope show
-
Yup, good points. The Post and On Tap get mentions for sponsored events.
-
that was fantastic.......bjm were outstanding tonight.
thanks lots and lots redsock we are owe you beucoup g & t's next time.
-
the promoter should have held the event at a bigger venue. it was very hot inside dc9, but the band was happy and played almost 2 hrs.
-
bigger venue was definitely in order. got out of work at 8:30 and called to see if it was sold out before i drove down. sure as shit it was. all these people hopping on the fucking dig bandwagon are really starting to piss me off.
anyone have the setlist?
-
there wasn't a set list, i'm not sure if they have ever had a set list.......i'm pretty sure anton just plays what he feels like and the band follows on.

Didn't get off work till 6:15. Knew I wouldn't get there before 8:30-8:45. Didn't even try. :(
-
Out of curiousity, when did folks show up to get in?
-
Yeah that was cool. Thanks Redsock.
So it was the good sounding serious playing BJM last night. No falling around drunk or hitting Frankie. I think I got some good heckles in but might have just been the really drunk guy at the back sluring and laughing at my own jokes.
What is a Library?
-
The show was already sold out when I walked up at 8:05, so I'm guessing the line started pretty early.
-

this is the problem with DC...there are no venues a rock band can play between DC9 (capacity 181) and the black cat (capacity roughly 700). nothing like the ottobar. the birchmere holds something like 550, but is not good for rock bands. so it's either sell out early in a small club and be cramped, or travel to philly or baltimore to see the band.
i saw amps for christ and daniel higgs at the warehouse instead of seeing BJM with a whole bunch of hipsters i'd rather not be around. i've seen BJM enough to know that i wasn't going to miss anything too spectacular, though i'm sure they were good.

Last night was great. It sold out right before 8. There were a ton of folks in line by 6:30 actually. It was extremely hot, the bands were all great, DC9 did a great job. And Anton held his shit together. I was a bit concerned after he spent the whole night hazily wandering around from couch to couch. Talked to him a little after the show, heâ??s out there. The rest of the band were great guys, honestly seemed pretty down to earth. Got to hang with some XM Radio folks too. I was pretty damn happy.
-
Why not?

Speaking of the Ottobar, BJM are playing there Sept 19th.

Check Anton out jammin with the Dandys at Lollapalooza: http://www.brianjonestownmassacre.com/mp3.html (http://www.brianjonestownmassacre.com/mp3.html) From Glorious Noise: 7:45 - The Dandy Warhols (Capitol) - So we didn't get a good place up front to see the Dandies. No biggie, most people were either watching the Killers or they'd died from heat stroke by that time. We got there in time to see them finish up "Bohemian Like You," which is still one of the best songs of that whole neo-psych scene. Oh yeah, I wait tables too. After another poppy song or two, they brought out a couple very special guests to show that a certain recent movie misrepresented their version of reality. Matt Hollywood and Anton Newcombe from the Brian Jonestown massacre came out and they ran through a ragged version of "Oh Lord" with Hollywood on vocal, and then medleyed it into a psychedelic drone jam led by Newcombe and eventually taken over by Courtney Taylor who sort of twisted it into a cover of "What She Said" by the Smiths, chanting, "It took a tattooed boy from Birkenhead," over and over while the band blissed out and Newcombe set down his guitar and hung out backstage, shaking hands and kissing babies (no shit). It was pretty far out, and seemed genuinely spontaneous. At one point the adorable Zia McCabe looked at Taylor as if to say, "What the fuck is going on?" Taylor responded with a smirk and a shrug, like, "Fuck it. Let's go with it. Why not?"
-
it's pretty telling that no one can name any of the songs they played on thurs. i realize that anton may not have a written setlist, but surely they must have played something recognizable to someone?!
anyway, to second snail, i probably would have been fed up with the hipsters as well and dc is definitely lacking a smaller to mid-size venue like the ottobar. i'm glad to hear they're coming back through in september so i'll have another shot at it. sucks that it's a weeknight tho.
met anton and matt hollywood at lollapalooza (as an aside, i happened to make him spill his own beer in his lap). he's quite a strange guy, but mesmerizing and utterly charming at the same time.

I happen to know they played stolen, and I wasnt even there, probably for the same reason you and Snail didnt go, but I dont know why you and Snail feel the need to take shots at the people who were there
-
The two recogniseable songs for me were When jokers attack and stolen. I always heckle for stolen, its a double entendre, dontcha know?

don't mean to take shots; it's just my frustration at missing out on this show. if it weren't for my shitty work situation right now, i would have been outside at 7 waiting to get in.

(n00b alert)
I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. Here are some of the songs they played, in no particular order:
Let Me Stand Next To Your Flower
Going to Hell
This Is Why You Love Me
Satellite
Servo
When Jokers Attack
Hide and Seek
Stolen
Nothing from Thank God For Mental Illness, one other tune from Take It From (can't remember the title).
Much thanks to Big Yawn and DC9 for bringing BJM to town. I enjoyed the night.

I think they also played Sailor and Wisdom - but things are a little hazy - thanks to the heat.
Overall, I thought BJM was pretty disappointing. I have been a fan since SOIH - but hadn't seen them live before (they had cancelled a couple of shows in KC/Lawrence)- so maybe I just expected more. Their sound was really thin - especially for three guitarists - and they didn't have hardly any stage presence at all. Often the lead guitar lines - like on Jokers and Hell - were difficult to hear and they didn't vary guitar tone hardly at all. They had banterless long pauses between songs. They also did a ridiculous 20 minute feedback/guitar effects jam that was only made marginally interesting because of the drummer's varying fast fills. I thought both Innaway and The Quarter After sounded better and engaged the crowd better. BJM seemed really unprofessional coming after TQA. As mentioned, at least Anton did not berate the crowd or bandmembers and he remembered the songs and lyrics. Of course, I might have left early - it was hard to tell because of their pauses.
The crowd did appear to be newbies. I gathered from their reactions they were familiar with only a few BJM songs - my guess is that they were the songs featured in Dig - but I haven't seen the movie so I'm not certain. Judging from the some overheard talk a lot of them were there for a car-crash like spectacle.

I can't confirm or deny if they played it, however, I remember someone called out for Wisdom a few times.
Anton said he would play it just to shut him up and then said 'just kidding'.
The guy accused anton of forgetting the song, which Anton denied, leading to the 'library' banter.

this all just proves to me that Canker really was drunk, he remembered none of this when I asked him if Wisdom was played, even though he apparently played a role in the 'library' banter
