A Perfect Circle Take New Step
Album features former Manson bassist
Maynard James Keenan will keep Tool in the shed for at least another few months, as the oddball frontman's other band A Perfect Circle releases Thirteenth Step on September 16th.
Since the release of its debut album, Mer de Noms, three years ago, A Perfect Circle has had a few chairs vacated and filled. Out are guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen and bassist Paz Lenchantin (who joined Billy Corgan's new band, Zwan). And joining Keenan, guitarist Billy Howerdel and drummer Josh Freese is Jeordie White, who formerly recorded as "Twiggy Ramirez" for Marilyn Manson.
A Perfect Circle have lined up a twelve-date club tour to showcase the new material, starting July 26th in Denver.
Track listing for Thirteenth Step:
The Package
Weak and Powerless
The Noose
Blue
Vanishing
A Stranger
The Outsider
Crimes
The Nurse Who Loved Me
Pet
Lullaby
Gravity
A Perfect Circle tour dates:
7/26: Denver, Ogden Theater
7/28: Dallas, Grenada Theater
7/30: Atlanta, Roxy Theater
8/1: Norfolk, VA, The Norva
8/2: Washington, DC, 9:30 Club
8/3: Boston, Berklee Academy of Music
8/5: New York, Irving Plaza
8/6: Philadelphia, Theater of Living Arts
8/8: Cleveland, Odeon
8/9: Detroit, St. Andrew's Hall

that fucking rocks. thanks for the info.
-
i am really looking forward to this show. i first heard about it a few weeks back, and have been dying to tell some people. i'm glad it's finally public enough to talk about.
-
There's a thread on the Velvet Rope saying that the Deftones are leaving the Summer Sanitarium tour on July 11 to open for APC. Take that with a grain of salt for now... *shrugs*

I'm definitely looking forward to this show.
Not sure if this was already mentioned on here, but...
Former SMASHING PUMPKINS Guitarist To Join A PERFECT
CIRCLE? - July 1, 2003
Former SMASHING PUMPKINS guitarist James Iha has
reportedly been approached to replace Danny Lohner
(NINE INCH NAILS) in the current A PERFECT CIRCLE
lineup.
According to Australia's Undercover News, Iha â?? who has remained relatively low-key since the breakup of SMASHING PUMPKINS â?? became "suddenly available" just as A PERFECT CIRCLE were about to audition guitarists.
Auditions that were to take place this week for A
PERFECT CIRCLE have now apparently been cancelled.
A PERFECT CIRCLE were formed by Billy Howerdel, the former guitar tech for SMASHING PUMPKINS. Lohner was brought into the group's fold earlier this year as a replacement for Troy Van Leeuwen, who has since become a full-time member of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE.
A PERFECT CIRCLE's as-yet-untitled sophomore album is due on September 16 through Virgin Records.

Holy shit! Iha's fucking amazing. Thanks. I'm going to have to postpone my move now.

Okay, enough with the lineage. What's the music like?
-
so the Perfect Circle bassist goes to Bill Corgan and his old guitarist goes to APC? Sounds more like a hip hop trade to me.
which makes me laugh.

Didn't they originally trade darcy to Hole for auf de maur and a drum machine to be named later?
I think this par for the course for the pumpkins.
-
awesome! i can't wait to see them ;)
-
I need a little clarity please:
The 9:30 web site says tickets go no sale Saturday 7/12 @ Noon through Tickets.com but an apc email says friday 7/11, but doesn't mention pre-sale. Am I to assume that the apc email is incorrect?
-
In the message I received from the band's mailing list, there was a link included in the message where you could buy tix (beginning at 11 am today). Here 'tis: http://apctickets.musictoday.com/ (http://apctickets.musictoday.com/)

Pygmy Love Circus, featuring Danny Carrey from Tool, is opening (re: www.thenorva.com). (http://www.thenorva.com).) That Deftones rumor everyone is talking about is a European September tour thing.
-
Very cool. I'm just excited to see APC in a smaller venue than Bender Arena this time around.

I have been wondering if going to both shows would be possible, you think it will be Rhett?
-
i'm so pissed i didn't get tickets! does anyone have an extra? :)
ps recent news i heard said that twiggy (manson bassist) is out of APC.... not sure if that's true or not. i just really want to seee them live
-
There is a second separate Black Cat that starts at 10 pm that night, so Rhett will have to be finished before that time.
Funny, I have never heard of A Perfect Circle before reading this thread. I love being uncool. I am the new Mankie I guess.
-
Have you heard of Tool? It is a Tool side project, I am sure they would be your favorite.

Not being a fan, I'm not up on them at all but it seems to me that I read something like that too. I do know that there was a very, very recent personel change with one of the members.
-
Is Tool anything like Korn? I remember seeing Old 97's years ago right after they had finished playing the second stage of Lollapalooza, and Rhett commented that "it was the fucking worse experience of our lives having to play for Korn fans"
I guess I have never heard any Tool or Korn, at least not knowingly.
-
Tool is like nu metal in its shittiness.
Rhett, I really dont think you would like all the shouting.
-

Don't sweat it,you're not missing much.Although Tool is much better than Korn.
-
Personally, I think Tool is worse than Korn.
Either way, you won't catch me at either of their shows.
Rhett, avoid at all cost!!!
-
I really dont know why Jadetree is going at all?

I'm with you there 100%!!It's like comparing month old bread with month old milk,it's a no win situation, they're both bad.

LOLOLOL!
Good analogy. ;)

Say what you will about Tool, but in reviewing a Clear Channel list of prices for various concerts that they promote (and who don't they promote these days), Tool was at the top. $250k per show, if I recall correctly.

Just goes to show, some people have no common sense,or taste for that matter,IMHO of course.Crap bands seem to always make a boat load of money. It's the real gems that struggle in these days of Clear channel.

I'd largely agree with you, but I think Tool might be an exception. I don't really care for them, but they seem to draw from a far more diverse and musically sophisticated audience than your run-of-the-mill Korn, Limp Bizkit, nu-Metal, date-raping lunkheads.

Ok uncle Bob,i'll be good : ) Just giving the facts as i see em.

i just want to know why everyone thinks they suck... honestly. they dont have to be the best band ever, but for all the people here who have "good taste" in music, you think that you could appreciate talent even if it doesn't fall in your realm of familiarity

That was kind of my point -- although I didn't spell it out very well.
Tool isn't a gold or platinum selling artist, yet they can demand as high a concert fee as any Billboard #1 or TRL artist. So the fans must be pretty hardcore. Moreover, they don't seem to draw the backwards-baseball-cap wearing half-breeds that jump on the latest nu-Metal bandwagon. They appear to draw a more diverse crowd of traditional head-bangers, prog-rock enthusiasts, punks, and hard-rock fans. From this, I would assume they must be talented, despite the fact that I don't elect to listen to them.
-
well jack osborne loves tool so i guess they must be "good"... ain't tool such a great name for a band, there are just so many meanings for that word none of them sexual in nature.

i've seen them,wasn't impressed.just not my cup o tea I suppose.They must be doing something right,if they make 250 grand a pop.

talented...or strategically marketed...

It must be the greatest focused marketing campaign ever. It's not like you see Tool appearing everywhere. Leads me to believe it must be organic.

well. . i thought tool put on a hell of a show when i saw them, granted, it was in 1994.

exactly.. they aren't even close to bands like limp bizkit.. their fans are very hardcore, and their music goes much deeper than a lot of other bands's... in my opinion.
sure, they may be a little "weird" (aka maynard, the singer) but who cares? their lyrics and music are original, honest, and not nearly as shitty as bands like linkin park's.
-
These nu-metal comparisons are totally off...Tool are a prog rock band, pure and simple. Their sound is very heavy, but it is played by extremely accomplished musicians. If you really want to knock 'em, they're more like the metal version of Pink Floyd. Which still isn't a good thing in my book...but it's better than Linkin Park.
P.S. A Perfect Circle still kinda suck.
-
Tool make me want to killllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!
Of the 3, I'll take A Perfect Circle which I can actually like now and then.

well said, my dear. and hey -- "Three Libras" is a great A Perfect Circle song.
-
Tool is brilliant as they made a lot of their own videos (the guitarist is an animator who did work for Disney),they have good lyrics that are funny even (one song in German on Aenima is actually a recipe for hash brownies), and have stuck to their guns. I own one of their albums and play it frequently. can not say that about any of the other so-called nu-metal bands.

Twiggy IS still in APC, but he is going by his real name (Jordie White, I think). Troy is no longer in APC...he is touring with Queens of the Stone Age. James Iha has replaced Troy.
Here is a review, posted by a fan on another forum, from the recent APC show...
they played a sound stage in burbank, CA called "Center Stage" off of Hollywood Way.
The show was very strict invite only. there was about 200 (maybe) people. James plays in the upper left hand corner back Maynard is in the middle upper part back and josh freeze is on the right upper . Twiggy (Jordy White) is in the front and Billy is in the front so they kind of form a star in a way....its pretty cool looking. The lights are all simple but look pretty badass. Its produced really well. They played 5 new songs plus a bunch of older songs. James seriously fits this band. he looked kickass up there tonight. Billy told me after the show that James has only practiced with the band for the past 11 days. All of Tool except Justin were there to partake. The new songs they played were Pet, The Weak and Powerless, The Package, The outsider and the Failure cover, something "Nurse". They played Hollow, magdalena, orestes, rose, thinking of you, thomas, & Judith. i might be forgeting sleeping beauty... James looks very well and very lost...hehe... as always... Maynard let him tell a joke. It was hilarious....and after James told the joke about meeting a bear here in Hollywood, maynard sarcastically said "chicago". that was really funny. Maynard would read a section out of a book he called "the book of seinfeld" in between songs.
James is definitely better....James was kickass... he played some really good riffs in the songs and after being in the band for only 11 days i thought it was amazing. James did do some sound effect type riffs but he was playing alot of the rocking riffs also....
maynard has a red long haired wig that had 2 pony tails

paige, you still looking for tickets?

Great show tonight. Maynard's voice was, of course, in fine form. The band sounded great. The new songs sound a bit harder than "Mer des Noms." Definitely looking forward to the new release now.
What can I say about Pygmy Love Circus? They are the AmericanTurbonegro (http://www.turbonegro.com).
-
Yep, it was definitely a great show. I really enjoyed the new songs. And James Iha was amazing! The highlights, for me, were "Rose" and "Judith".
As for the opening band... They, in my opinion, sucked ass.
-
So here is what I have as the set list:
Pet
Hollow
Magdalena
Weak
Orestes
Rose
Thinking of You
The Package
3 Libras
Thomas
The Outsider
Nurse
Judith
