Title: blue man group complex rock show
Post by: thatguy on July 08, 2003, 05:40:00 pm
a couple of friends and i decided last minute to check out the blue man group show at merriweather last night.  it was amazing.  easily the most fun i've had at a show in a long time.  if any of y'all have a chance to see it, i strongly recommend going.

for those that don't know, it's three blue guys doing their usual percussive thing using unique "instruments" backed up by an 8 piece rock band, guest vocalists, and video presentations.  the percussion section blew me away, the medley of covers was fun, and the piece memorializing 9/11 was subtle and touching.  i'm considering a trip to philly when it swings back through the east.

 b. when did you listen to my recommendations before?

I bought a two skinny Js CD and a har mar superstar CD.....

I am sure they were your recommendations too?

Does no one at work give you a hard time for your tastes? Are all they all scared of you?

i have recommended the 2 skinnee js live performances as a good time (*), but i know from experience that most people don't like the cd until they've seen them live.  i did not recommend har mar.  i have seen him once, and only because it was free.  i would not pay to see him again, nor would i purchase his album.

not many people at the club give me a hard time about my taste, and not many people at the club are afraid of me.  what reason would they have for either?

my tastes range widely and are quite fluid.  what i like one day i might not the next.  sometimes i want deep and meaningful, sometimes i want pure fun.  usually, i want something in between.  my discussions here have not even come close to encompassing my taste in music.  even if they had, i would feel no need to justify my personal tastes.  i like what i like, you like what you like.  have i ever made a negative comment regarding your musical tastes?

for people that claim to be interested in being exposed to new music, some of y'all are pretty damn closed minded.

answer me this:  have you ever seen the blue man group perform their complex album (live, on tv, heard the album, whatever)?

(*)last chance to catch them in the area:  recher theater, friday, 11 july.

I saw Blue Man Group at Coachella, and also thought they were very very entertaining.

and i am not anywhere near middle aged. Its certainly better than alt-country.

weren't blue man group "hip" when they were off-broadway... i guess "success" spoils everyone.

I saw the Complex Tour when it stopped by the Warner Theatre a couple of months ago. It was one of the better shows that I've seen this year so far.

I agree with thatguy...I know I've been a musical snob from time to time, but there are a lot of folks here that remind me a lot of John Cusack and Jack Black in High Fidelity.  TOTAL elitists, but I think it's kind of funny. Personally, I'd go check out Blue Man Group any day. What cracks me up is when some of these folks think they've stumbled onto the next Nirvana, only to shy away from that band once they got mildly popular saying they sold out or they're not cool and indie anymore. I was watching an old episode of Saturday Night Live the other day and Veruca Salt was the musical guest.  HA!  Remember the major labels had that insane bidding war and how everyone said they'd be HUGE? And their one big hit, "Seether"?  Yeah...seether career go away.   :)

Tracey Bonham is the guest vocalist, I think.

People generally mock what they dont understand. "Joshing" someone for their musical tastes is, I thought, pretty benign.

But by giving you a hard time about it you had to justify it and other people jumped to your and the blue man group's defence. That way I got to learn more about the blue man group.

If I hadnt of mocked you that might not have happened.

My beef with the blue man group is it opens the doors of musical entertainment to the macdonalds world. Paint any twats blue and put them on stage, call them the blue man group. With the right equipment its WHOOOOARRRR instant success around the world. You can have blue man groups playing every major city every night around the world.

Personally I like my music entertainmet to have personality.

I guess the success of the blue man group comes from fusing a music concert and a broadway show?

I think I would rather listen to the rocky horror picture show though.

Saying that one of my non-internet friends also rated blue man group very highly and he normally had good taste.

Music and a Broadway show???  oh man, how awful.  that must be pshhh, art!  haha.  thanks but no thanks.

next thing you know, they'll be putting music in broadway shows, and musicians will be acting!

the Blue man group show has more personality than most boring Indie rock shows, thats for sure

nothing more boring to actually watch, than most indie "hip" bands onstage.

Isn't the Blue Man Group kind of 90's? A bit passe', no?

I think they are going for something different now.  I saw them in Boston in 1999 and then i saw their "rock concert" in 2003.  other than 3 Blue guys onstage, nothing similar at all.

while the ideas you mention may be trite and cliche, the ideas behind them do have merit.

what did i justify?  i merely said that i like what i like.  how is that justification?  i made no further explanation of the blue man group or my feelings regarding the show.

if you had seen the show, you would realize that the band was quite talented, and i wager that it would be very difficult to recreate on a mass scale.  that said, i think that part of the point of the blue man group is that the personality of the blue fellas is removed, so that all that you have left is the performance.  i could be totally off base, but that's my take on it.

there's not much broadway to it.  it's a music concert straight up, with a bit of comedy and satire about rock shows integrated into it.  the blue dudes are musicians.  they may not use standard instruments, but they are incredibly talented persussionists.

that cracks me up. did you used to like the smurfs too?  I often wonder how some people get so mixed up with what they "think" music should be or what is cool or not, how much tickets are,, or whatever, that they cant really just hear good music and forget the rest of the crap. My roommate likes what i think is just crap, but every now and then i am forced to listen to it, and despite the fact that its wikked stupid, commercial, whatever, it can be good for its purpose. Sometimes i wish i could just have one copy of every CD ever, and never have to hear anyones opinion on it, i wonder if i would still listen to the same bands.

Yes and I could go up to the drug dealer at the end of my street and ask him why he sells drugs instead of working at Macdonalds. It just does not sound like a good idea, does it?

i still don't think i've justified anything.  i said that i think the band was talented, which i said in my original post.  i might have gone into more detail, but i don't think that's justification.  either way, i'm not interested in arguing.  since you like to win arguments so much, i'll grant you that.

i see no similarity between your example and mine.  not a good analogy.  is this not a community of your friends?  you liken that to a hostile environment where you can't ask questions?  if that were the case, why would you want to spend time here?

you're welcome.  i am not horribly familiar with the group.  i know that they have had long runs before, but i don't know if a tour was concurrent with that or not.

Ok not a great analogy, but I dont find overly sincere is a style that suits me. I think it just sounds like I am being sarcastic.

I like hanging around here, the loons are funny. Thanks for moderating.

I will force myself to listen to some of that Blue man group album now, they had a sampler for a $1 in game exchange, I wonder if its still there.....
