Title: Foo Roll Call?
Post by: Bombay Chutney on October 10, 2005, 10:37:00 am
Has there been one yet?

Haven't seen them in a few years.  Really looking forward to it.

I'm there...a friend is picking me up at a metro station in VA at 6:30 -- we should get there by 7:30?

Will head right to the beer garden.  I'll probably pop down for some of Weezer.  We're GA.

great show....

thought the Kaiser Chiefs were much better than at the 9:30 club, due to the fact the singer was hitting the proper notes and lack of the cringeworthy slower tunes from the album.  still think the drums drags the band down a bit...

best Weezer show i've seen, River actually looked like he was having fun and not merely going through the motion like the last couple times.  a bit creeped about him not wearing the glasses though.  a nice touch on the acoustic "Islands In the Sun" sung from  a stage setup behind the sound booth and directly to the people in the back.  set could have been paced a bit better to many slow songs at the beginning but ended on a high note.

The Foo Fighters delivered the arena rock goods, lasers, smoke, and a big sound.  Grohl is great musician, performer, decent storyteller, but a so-so songwriter.

The GA crowd was remarkable well behaved, sans the two DUDES that felt the need to crowd up in front of us during Weezer, proceeded to get baked and puke all over their shoes.

Finally, tear down the Patriot Center!!!!! It took an hour to get there from Arlington.  Oh wait that included stopping for food... nevermind

Just got back as well.  Best Weezer I have seen as well, looked like they were having fun.  Foos were high energy as expected and it is easy to see why they are the last act on the bill.  Not many bands could follow them and the high octane set they perform.  Great to see these two bands together and Kaiser Chiefs were pretty solid as the opener.

Traffic was surprisingly good, then I realized it was a holiday.   Getting in and out was easy.

I was right next to where these guys stopped (if we're talking about the same guys, one had a curly goatee?) during Weezer. Totally annoying. Kept arm pumping and hitting my girl in the head. Ridiculous. We went to the back of the GA for Foos.

Kaisers were awesome and we laughed at "The band you have just enjoyed was the Kaiser Chiefs! Years from now you're going to go, 'Oh My God... I was there! I saw the Kiaser Chiefs, and I sang with the Kaiser Chiefs!!'"

Weezer was pretty great but they lumped too many Make Believe songs together in the set. Mad props for the Foo Fighters and Blur covers, but Rivers should at least learn the words instead of needing a music stand. El Scorcho!

The Foos were their standard awesome self, although they seemed to play a song or two fewer then most setlists I've seen. I love Stacked Actors, but they do ruin it with the 10 minute jam version.

I feel like the crowd was less "jump around" and act stupid during Foos then Weezer, honestly. All and all, awesome show from opener on through.

Also - what was the name of the Chili place Dave was talking about during his set? I knew I spent too much time on here when I heard him hype a Chili restauraunt and thought, "That's not Ben's Chili Bowl! 930.com is going to throw a fit!"

Went, had a good time.  Lots of great music.  Hate the parking at that place.  I now have a few more bands I can add to my 'yeah Ive seen them" list.  Damn that list is getting long.

I find it one of the easier places to get in and out of (of venues that hold that many people). If you're coming from the south, take 123 North, then turn right on Braddock Road, but instead of turning left into the Patriot Center parking complex, turn right and park at University Mall. It has a movie theatre, so they don't know who's concert parking and who's there for a movie, and you can circumvent all the traffic when leaving. It's literally a 3 minute walk at most.

I only saw a third or so of Weezer's set, but I was impressed.  And the crowd was way in to it.  I came into work today doing the double-handed "W" sign.  I'm not all that familiar with Weezer; they were good live.

For the Foo Fighters, I used the mosh pit to get me up within about 8 people from the barrier.  I have to say, it was crowded, but it was a good, relatively easygoing crowd as someone mentioned.  When an annoying dude came barrelling up throwing elbows in everyone's face to get up front, folks pointed him out and the bouncers reached in and pulled him out, 4 people back from the barrier.  Amazing.  So, up where I was, EVERY person was singing every word and bouncing.  Huge, high energy.  What a great, sweaty time.

Grohl is a nearly perfect performer for what he's doing.  Great rock star, plus funny and smart and entertaining.  I love that man.  Like that's news.  Can't wait for the show in New Jersey on Friday...I may not get so close up, but I can enjoy that show from anywhere.

AND I got to hang out with Chutney in the beer garden.  What a great evening.   ;)

excellent show.  impressive instrument switching by the weezer guys.

never had seen the foos before, and whoever said it above was right, the foos HAD to be the closer.

The security at this show was awesome.  As someone up there said, when anyone got out of control, they were removed.  I think that's awesome, cuz there were some of us who were getting seriously squished.  I know that comes along with being front row center, the barrier leaves it mark on your chest for a few days, but there's a difference between people moving around and having fun, and people moving around and being obnoxious.

That said...I think this show was amazing.  I had the best experience ever.  Ended up walking with Pat's towel, a pick from Dave and a drumstick from Taylor.  Amazing night.  Weezer is my all-time favoritest band ever, with Foos falling a close second.  Who'da thunk I'd get to see them play TOGETHER.  I feel like enjoyed Weezer's set more, only because by the time Foo Fighters came on, I was pretty much rocked out.  I loved Rivers' comment about "coming up next is, are, is/are? Foo Fighters."  I always struggle with that one, too!  haha

Anyone going to try to win tickets from DC101 to catch the show on Sunday night?!?!?!

Ohmigod yes, but it's so hard to win these insane radio call in contests.  I hate 'em and haven't tried anything like it in years.  [In fact, I think I only ever tried to win a radio contest once...don't remember what it was, but it was stoopid.]

I think I may resort to Craig's List or Ebay (though how do you know the person's really got the tickets??  Plus, it's probably a list since it's so soon....).

Way psyched for you as a Weezer and Foo fan -- that must have been an awesome two-fer for you.  Very cool.

I did get squashed by a falling crowd surfer, but otherwise got out unscathed and happy.

Shit...I just got an email from DC101 -- at friggin' 2:45 p.m.  Apparently some tickets went on sale this a.m. (though at exactly 10:00 a.m. I tried both tickets.com and ticketmaster and nothing was listed).

 From email:

 Hello all

Sorry the newsletter is a bit late this time around, but we had some good news to share. So, I thought I'd wait.

Let's start with The Foo Fighters. Fresh off their show at the Patriot Center last night, I'm happy to announce Elliot In The Morning night with The Foo Fighters at The 9:30 Club. The show is THIS SUNDAY night. So here's the deal. A limited number of tickets will go on sale this morning. All the other tickets will be given away on DC101. So, listen non-stop between now and Sunday night. As for my show, there are several ways to win. Any time you hear me play a Foos song, call in. If you hear Dave Grohl himself tell you to call in, do so. If I tell you to call in, do so. And, we're bringing back We Dial / You Win. Don't forget, the show is THIS SUNDAY at The 9:30 Club.

Then, I start trying again & they say you can only buy 1.  So, I try.  Then, none.  I am empty handed.  God, they were SO AWESOME at HFStival.  I want to CRY!!!!!!!!!  :(

Well, they could have gotten hard tickets at a ticket raid or something like that, or alternately, I suppose at $500++/pair, they can afford to have someone go to the venue, collect the tickets at willcall and give them to winning bidders.

Maybe that too...I dig the Foos, don't have the last record, but I truly don't have the patience for doing this like I used to. I think once you see a band x number of times, you fondly remember certain songs you saw (plus the antics of Pat Smear) and then you move on to other stuff. I know that the next time the Shins play it'll be presale city and then a fast sell-out. Oh well.

I had three windows open, clicking the continue buttons like I was gonna get the cheese.

Finally after 40 minutes of the 3 different "no way, you suck" messages, the 30 second countdown pages, and the false 10/16 at 4pm wussy-weeder screen, I got my golden ticket!

I'm more excited than dirt.  Seriously, I'm panting and so sweaty, I feel like I've already seen them and danced my ass off.

Foo Fighters have not been the same since Pat Smear left the band.  That doesn't mean that I can't go see them and have a good time though.  I'd give my left nut to hear them play Exhausted.  If ever there was a night when they would play that song, this has got to be it...  Unless they do an acoustic set which would also be nice.  Who knows that they have in store for us?!?!

Good point. I posted a quesiton about that in the FAQ. The fact that there's a Trapt show with doors at 5pm is going to make it more of a hassle. We'll see what the moderators say.

I'm guessing the professional ticket brokers have pulled their tickets from ebay... the rest of the people selling tickets are locals who either got lucky in the online sale or won them via DC101, none of them have sold many tickets in the past. it will certainly be interesting outside the club when the sellers and buyers meet face to face...

Q:    Hate to be that messanger, but you can't transfer the tix. I just spoke to a guy at the 9:30 Club and only the person who bought them can get in with the wrist band they will put on you right then and there. I know it sucks. I had a bid of $255 for a single ticket.

A:    I have confirmed this. BUYERS, PLEASE DISREGARD THIS AUCTION AND DO NOT PAY FOR THE TICKETS. Buyers, if you are interested in 1 ticket, contact me. I can still attend the show with one person.

Yeah, this is from my auction. I know it'll affect my eBay "ethos," to use a rhetorical term, but that is not my biggest concern. I was unaware that the wristband policy would be used. It's strange, but it certainly makes sense.

I guess this is what I get for selling tickets for the first time! I'm opposed to the idea of reselling tickets, but I just paid over $500 on eBay to see Pearl Jam in Atlantic City a few weeks ago, so I figured it was karma coming back to me; I guess not.

Thanks for all the info, guys! I've learned my lesson.

it's also interesting to note how many of the ebay ticket listing included the phrase "once in a lifetime event", seeing has the Foo Fighters have already planned the 9:30 club three times.  Once with Tori Amos and Beck... ah what short memories people have   :D

Haven't the Foos played the 9:30 more than that? I've saw them in July of 97 at the Club and again in November of 2000. Other than that show with Tori and Beck, I think they may have played 1 or 2 more times.

Weezer and the Foos: Old but Good News

 By Tricia Olszewski
 Special to The Washington Post
 Wednesday, October 12, 2005; C09

Both Weezer and the Foo Fighters had something to prove at the Patriot Center Monday night: that neither was only as good as the last album. Each of the acts released disappointments this year -- Weezer's lackluster "Make Believe" and the Foos' bloated double-disc "In Your Honor" -- giving the headliners more in common than their decade-long careers and alt-rock designations.

On paper, then, the so-called Foozer Tour makes sense. But onstage, the bands showed what a giant umbrella that alt-rock category can be. To wit, take the opening chitchat from each respective frontman:

 1) Rivers Cuomo: "We are collectively known as Weezer. And we are here to rock you."

 2) Dave Grohl: "AAHHHHHHH!"

But regardless of whether ticket holders preferred Weezer's tortured geek-pop or the Foos' tortured hard rock, chances are no one at the sold-out, three-hour-plus show left disappointed. The bands went to their new albums sparingly, highlighting instead the hits that put them among the few survivors of the '90s pop scene.

Weezer played first, quickly earning the audience's love with the "Green Album's" shimmery lead track, "Don't Let Go," and a cover of their touring partner's lovely "Big Me."

Cuomo, a notorious eccentric, dropped his thick glasses and his stoicism as he paced the stage and pumped the crowd, jerkily throwing himself into "Pinkerton's" anguished love song "El Scorcho" with the abandon of a wallflower finally venturing onto the dance floor.

The foursome kept the momentum going with "Say It Ain't So," "Hash Pipe" and "Photograph," with Cuomo switching places with drummer Patrick Wilson on the latter.

Highlights of the 90-minute set included Cuomo's solo acoustic version of "Island in the Sun" and his invitation to a young woman to contribute some guitar on "Undone (The Sweater Song)"; a low point was his use of a cheesy Framptonian talk box on "Beverly Hills," though the episode was over quickly.

To kick off the Fighters' high-voltage set, Grohl, an Alexandria native, and his three fellow Foos blasted onstage with the title track from "In Your Honor," with its apt opening line: "Can you hear me, hear me screaming?"

For the next 13 songs, Grohl was -- and I mean this as a compliment -- an absolute maniac, bellowing and head-banging and running around the stage as if his early days as a D.C. punk never ended.

Aggressive rockers including "Stacked Actors," "This Is a Call" and latest single "Best of You" got extended treatment, with even softer sides like "Learn to Fly" and "Everlong" turning into a frenzy of drums and guitars. The charismatic lead Foo did stop to catch his breath once in a while, showing off his impeccable ability to chat up a crowd whether the topic is Krispy Kreme or the trouble he got into as a kid.

But Grohl's energy never flagged, with the only bummer of the night being a hint that someday it might: A "demographic check" led the rock veteran to advise the teens in attendance to enjoy their youth while it lasts.

"I'm 36," Grohl said, "and this [bleepin'] hurts!"

I clearly don't want this past week's Foo love to go away... And PS, Grohl clarified last night -- the Foozer shows are co-headline shows, with each band scheduled to play an hour and 20 minutes.

 Alt-rock played full tilt

 -------------------------------

It's customarily a no-no to play songs by the band you're warming up for. Rivers Cuomo and his puckish pals in Weezer either forgot the rule Monday night at the Patriot Center -- or flouted it.

On hearing that the headlining Foo Fighters would be passing over one of their biggest hits -- the infectious "Big Me" -- Weezer happily played the song in its own set, along with a cover of Blur's "Song 2," adding another layer of parody to the Brit-pop band's sendup of American grunge.

Weezer properly played Weezer songs, too, including its latest punk-pop gem, the mellow headbanger "Beverly Hills," and 20th-century faves such as "Say It Ain't So," "Buddy Holly" and "Undone (The Sweater Song)." Mr. Cuomo skulked through the dark arena to play a solo acoustic version of "Island in the Sun" from a soundboard pit, lending the tune a distant melancholy that always seems to lurk beneath the Weez's playful surface.

Whoever came up with the idea of tethering Weezer to Foo Fighters must have felt the same flicker of inspiration that anyone near age 30 probably felt Monday: that these two roughly contemporaneous alt-rock bands have weathered a decade and show no signs of flagging despite an onslaught of new trends (emo and rap-metal and resurgent boy bands, oh, my).

The Foos boast an ever-changing cast that centers on ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, an area native who seemed ecstatic to play before a home audience that included his parents, James and Virginia Grohl, and wife, Jordan.

By now, the Grohl brood must be well familiar with its famous member's nasty habits, among them loud belches (courtesy of a bowl of chili at the Hard Times Cafe, Mr. Grohl explained) and a truck-driver's mouth. Then there's the laundry list of prior offenses that Mr. Grohl shared with 10,000 or so of his friends -- such as the time he was pulled over on Route 50 with a suspended license -- and other assorted high jinks that bounced him across three local high schools in as many years.

Still, how could they not be proud -- or at least in awe -- as they watched the pugnacious Mr. Grohl direct a multigenerational audience that hinged on his every growl and gesture?

Mr. Grohl may have held back "Big Me," but he delivered all the heavy-but-hummable Foo hits, including the crunching Kurt Cobain tribute "My Hero" and "Learn to Fly," plus a quiet solo rendering of "Everlong." New fare such as "Best of You" and "DOA" fit snugly into the Foos' fierce 90-minute set.

For all their high wattage, though, the Foos weren't much for spontaneity. When Mr. Grohl traded places with drummer Taylor Hawkins (who crooned "Cold Day in the Sun" from the band's latest, "In Your Honor") the switch seemed as perfunctory as an outfit change, as did Mr. Grohl's rush toward the back of the hall for some bonding with the cheap seats.

Mr. Grohl's recollections of the band's days at the Black Cat (a local venue he co-owns) were a fond reminder of how far the Foos have come -- and, incidentally, how professional they've become.

No shame in that, of course. Still, it wouldn't have killed them to cover a Weezer song.
