Title: I bought a NEW cd!
Post by: mankie on July 09, 2003, 05:41:00 pm
By a Joy Division tribute band called "Interpol"...the name of the album is "red light" or something like that. It was $10 in Sam Goody so decided to give it a shot....bad decision. I'll trade it in at the cd exchange for $4 and just keep listening to the real thing...Joy Division!

 Hey ! I tried.  :(

Smackette would be cracking up right now if she were reading this.

She raves about this album and I said "I liked it to, when the band called themsleves Joy Division/Bauhuas/The Cure"  and her reply was "Thanks dad, but this is the Joy Division of my generation."  Ah the youth of today.

I have no problem with a band being influenced by an earlier band, I really don't. But put some fucking effort into being a bit original for crying out loud. That cd may as well be called, "The lost Joy Division B-sides as performed by the tribute band...Interpol!"...I bet the singer even has those fits on stage like Curtis used to do.

I completely agree, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that I thoroughly enjoyed their live show.  It was really great.  And no the lead singer doesn't have Ian Curtis fits, but he does stare off into the distance while singing like Ian did.  When he wasn't fitting of course.

Try the new Pernice Brothers "Yours, Mine, and Ours". Undeniable New Order and Smiths influences, yet sounds different enough to not be a total rip-off.

(1) Way to keep up the run of mentioning the Pernice Bros. in every thread.

 (2) In this thread, I *finally* find myself intrigued -- where can I listen to them?

Interpol tracks:   Obstacle 1 (http://www.parasol.com/asx/featured/Interpol%20-%20Obstacle%201.asx)  ;   PDA (http://archives.warpradio.com/accuradio/ss/interpol_pda.wma) ;  Say Hello to the Angels (Live in Studio) (http://kexp.org/listen/in_studio/interpol/interpol_sayhello.asx) ;  NYC (Live in Studio) (http://kexp.org/listen/in_studio/interpol/interpol_NYC.asx)

One thing todays "derivitive" have done is take  blueprints that are very raw and not particularly accessible and polished them into something new and perhaps more socially well-adjusted. Joy Division has catchy songs, but bottom line is a lot of it is deep, emotional, and depressing, limiting accessability.  Interpol borrows a lot of that sound (and many others!) but spins it in a different, shallower direction, but you can play it at a party without worrying about someone jumping out a window.  Same with the Strokes.  A lot of people say they're derivitive of VU.  But the Strokes made an upbeat, fun album that you can listen to over and over.  I love VU, but I'm exhausted and emotionally damaged after listening to any of their albums in their entirety.  I guess what I'm trying to say is these "derivitive" bands are providing some evolutionary function by updating the sounds of these classic old bands into something more accessible. I think its worth the effort to put a modern take on classic vibes/sounds if the new songs themselves are strong, which both Interpol's and the Strokes' are.

Mankie bought a new CD, I wonder what he will do with his old one, greatest hits of the 80's wasnt it?

Mankie Interpol isnt that bad, listen a few more times and you will get to like it. Personally my biggest gripe with it is not that its a rip off. More that the lyrics are nonsense and I really just dont feel like they mean it. It is somehow, well not emotionless, but close.

Speaking of derivative, everyone is derivative.  And I finally thought of what band from the late 80s that Idlewild reminds me of.  I know I'm gonna get 'spanked' for this, but if you listen, it's there.

 The Mighty Lemon Drops!

Thanks, Kosmo, for the emusic tip -- it was Pernice Bros I'm finally intrigued by, not Interpol.

I have to agree with you about Interpol Mankie.  I bought the album when it came out hoping for good things but was extremely let down.  I've only made it through the entire cd about three times.  It's too repetitive and boring for my taste.  I only wish they could write a song as good as a Joy Division song.

Wasn't the word out from the day the album was released that Interpol was a Joy Division ripoff?  This isn't anything new.

I'll be the first to agree that Joy Division is better...but Interpol wrote some damn good songs for that CD.  At least someone can carry a tune these days, and yes, that show was pretty phenomenal.  I'd go see them again.  They're a good band.

I am sure someone on this board can argue that every new band is a rip off , or derivitave, or not original.  but I prefer to listen to the music and if i like it, then its cool.  I am not supporting a cause really, just buying a CD, and listening to a few good songs.

I think Interpol sound like of like Echo and The Bunnymen too....a little less happy though.

Wait wait wait a second.  Next you're gonna tell me Good Charlotte aren't "real punks".

Some of us weren't alive when Joy Division was around, so we're gonna enjoy what we got.  Plus it'll probably be another 10 years until Birma, TV and Joe Jackson make their way back here.

I believe you can still get Joy Division CD's at most reputable music retail stores.
