INDIANAPOLIS
The NCAA banned the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments, but will not prohibit them otherwise.
The NCAA's executive committee decided this week the organization did not have the authority to bar Indian mascots by individual schools, committee chairman Walter Harrison said Friday.
Nicknames or mascots deemed "hostile or abusive" would not be allowed by teams on their uniforms or other clothing beginning with any NCAA tournament after Feb. 1, said Harrison, the University of Hartford's president.
"What each institution decides to do is really its own business" outside NCAA championship events, he said.
At least 18 schools have mascots the NCAA would deem "hostile or abusive," including Florida State's Seminole and Illinois' Illini. The full list of schools was not immediately released.
Not all schools with Indian-related nicknames would be on that list. NCAA officials said some schools using the Warrior nickname do not use Indian symbols and would not be affected.
Vernon Bellecourt, president of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and Media, was pleased with the postseason ban but wanted even stronger action by the NCAA.
"We would have hoped the NCAA would have provided the moral leadership on this issue, but obviously they've chosen to only go halfway," said Bellecourt, a member of the Anishinabe-Ojibwe Nation in Minnesota.
The NCAA two years ago recommended that schools determine for themselves whether the Indian depictions were offensive.
Among the schools to change nicknames in recent years over such concerns were St. John's (from Redmen to Red Storm) and Marquette (from Warriors to Golden Eagles).
The NCAA plans to ban schools using Indian nicknames from hosting postseason events. Harrison said schools with such mascots that have already been selected as tournament sites would be asked to cover any offensive logos.
Such logos also would be prohibited at postseason games on cheerleader and band uniforms starting in 2008.

I recommended to Venerable that Florida State change their name to "The Casino Owners" to see if they can really insult the American Indian population.
-
Florisa State would be more accurate in calling themselves the Florida State Negroes than the Florida State Seminoles, anyway. I mean, c'mon, hot many Native Americans play college sports, anyway?
-
i think you should boycott, sonick

And apparently the majority of native americans don't have an issue "Indian" themed mascots...
"As Sports Illustrated found out in a recent poll, 83% of American Indians reported that they were not offended by the use of Indian names. The Utah Utes got official tribal permission for their continued use of the name, as did the Florida Seminoles."

i also heard that 83% of NASCAR fans dont have a problem with the term "dirty redneck".

I know Vansmack, who is a NASCAR fan, refers to himself as such quite often. ;)

In general team names are a positive thing not a negative. I mean I could see Native Americans not wanting a sewage treatment plant named for their tribe but sports teams usually put the name in a good light.
So what of the Demon Decons and Blue Devils?
-
No more Fighting Sioux at the Frozen Four :(

Absolutely. For four hours every sunday I throw on the wife beater, grab a twelver of the high life and yell at Smackette to make me some buffalo wings, to which she replies - "How's Kasey [Kahne] doing?"
-
Sounds like my Sunday. Except it's veggie burgers, and Celeste is asking about Jeff Gordon and Dale Jr, rather than Kasey Kahne. Different generations, I guess.

The Virginia Cavaliers is pretty much a stereotype of a 17th century European warrior, and that's ok, but of course we can't stereotype a 17th century Native American warrior, no no.

I'm suprised bulldogs around the world aren't offended by the Georgia bulldog they insult by making him wear girly seaters at the games and bark on command.

Guiny, please spare us the sordid details of your sex life.

That sports illustrated poll was about names, not mascots. I think that's what the NCAA is getting at. Personally, someone who dresses in traditional native american garb ala Chief Illinawek of the University of Illinois is much more tasteful than the old Cleveland Indians logo of a grinning cartoonish indian.
And in the relm of names, Seminoles and Illini are not bad. However, like the article mentioned, something like Redmen, or our own Redskins can be seen as offensive. To use a white example, Celtics and Fighting Irish or just Irish are good. But if the nickname highlighted a sterotype or was something like the Micks, that would be bad.

I know this decision just came down, but this has been discussed here before.
Hey ggw...I believe you're the search master...can ya find it?

i had a native american teacher in high school and our class was talking about just how sensitive this type an issue was to that community, and he replied "only apples get angry at such things". so i guess its ok to like them redskins.
-
hahaha apples...that made me chuckle.
