Did anyone see him on TNT or TBS last night during Demolition Man? I dont know much about him but he seemed like a pretty cool person. Makes me wanna go and buy one of his albums....well i dont know about that. He said he might be coming out with three albums this year, Solo, Old 97's (I think thats the name of the band....i know the 97's part is right) and one with some bass player friend of his. He even laughed about an album he made in High School and was glad that their was only 1000 of them in circulation.

Didn't catch that, but thanks for the info, Guiny.<P>   The bass player friend is probably Murry from the Old 97's. The sometimes perform as a duo calling themselves the Ranchero Brothers. They've never released an album as RB so it would be very cool if they did.<P>   Murry produced the Rhett solo album from his high school days. Apparently, Rhett was really into Britpop in high school, and took on a Bowie-inspired fake British accent that he sang in on that record. Reviews I've read have pretty much agreed that it sucked.<P><BR> <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Arial, Veranda">quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Guiny:<BR><B>Did anyone see him on TNT or TBS last night during Demolition Man? Were any of y'all there? I was very happy he did "Wish the Worst" off of Hitchhike to Rhome and "Goin' Goin' Gone" off of Wreck your Life. Most of the songs he did were by request; I'm glad most of the requests were for Old 97's songs.

We will be at Rhett/Neil, though I sort of agreed with the guy at Borders who said<BR>"That was good, I didn't want to see Neil Finn anyway." If I'd known he'd be playing for free, probably wouldn't have bought tickets...

It was fantastic - even Rhett Miller was surprsingly good (hate the solo album but do like Old 97's).  He even said he may be back later this year with the Old 97's.  Neil Finn was great, he is a great with the audience.  And a great cover of The Smiths' There's A Light That Never Goes Out dedicated to Johnny Marr.  Markie did a nice little dork leap when it started.

Rhett did only three Old 97's songs, whereas most of the songs he did at Borders were Old 97's songs. Thus, I was less than thrilled about song selection. However, I think he was a lot better solo acoustic than with the Instigators backing him. Of course, not nearly as good as seeing an Old 97's show, but I was satisfied. He also left of the funny little between song stories, including the one about "Our Love" being Nick Hornby's favorite song of 2002, the one he plays while on his treadmill, and the fact that Nick Hornby started a correspondence with him and told him he wanted to be his friend. Fico, I think you saw the better of the two shows by seeing him at Borders.<P>   We left after about 45 mins of Neil Finn on account of me having an early morning meeting, our mutual unfamiliarity with his material, and my dates' aching tummy. While I respect his artistry, and saw that he has a good stage presence, I don't think I'll ever be much of a Neil Finn fan.<p>[This message has been edited by Rhett Miller (edited 01-29-2003).]

Actually, I probably preferred last nights show to the Black Cat, because he was better solo than with the listless backup hacks he had playing with him. However, he did play for twice as long at the Black Cat, and threw in a healthy dose of Old 97's songs, which he didn't have time to do last night. I liked him at Borders because he did a healthy dose of Old 97's material (including one song I've never seen them do live, though he forgot the words), and because he was more chatty between songs than I've ever seen him. All tree performances had their merits I guess.

I think Satellite Rides, the best selling Old 97's album to date, sold around 60,000 copies. No idea how much the solo album has sold. It seems to have more record company backing, and they offer it at that bargain price, but don't know if that's translated into sales. It hasn't at any time cracked the Billboard top 100.

I may be the #1 Neil Finn fan in Washington, DC. It got off to a bit of a slow start--bad audio mix--but then it picked up fantastically. Neil's bass player, Sebastian Steinberg (of Soul Coughing) was phonomenal, but Lisa Germano's presence on backing vocals and violin was missed (due to a family illness). That said, Neil performed rockin' versions of Locked Out (Crowded House), Driving Me Mad, She Will Have Her Way, Something So Strong (also CH), a cover of the Smith's "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" as well as a number of cuts off his latest album, One All. As usual, he interacted with the audience wonderfully, including calling 2 guys to join him on Weather With You, and playing the first track of a CD of some audience member's band, while jokingly threatening "to sue his ass" because track 1 had the same name as Crowded House's "Mean To Me."<P>For a more mellow experience, I highly recommend "One All." For a live concert experience, I recommend Neil's "Seven Worlds Collide" CD or DVD (featuring Eddie Vedder, Johnny Marr, Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway of Radiohead, Tim Finn, Sebastian Steinberg and Lisa Germano.

neil finn was fantastic. if anyone needs pictures, remind me in about a week and i can burn you a cd with all of the photos and mail it off. (assuming the photos turned out well, unlike in july when they were crap)<P>as for rhett miller, well, the 3rd to last song was great, but i didn't feel that his music translated well with just him and a guitar. some songs did, but not the whole set. if he had a band, i think i really would have enjoyed him.

I read that Neil Finn was late getting to the show in Philly, requiring Rhett to do an extra long set. He included a Bowie cover amongst those songs. Probably better than the Fiona Apple song he played at Borders.

I heard from a friend in Dallas who Knows Rhett since back in HS that the rumor mill is flying fast and furious out there. Apparently (and this wasn't 100% verified), the 97's label has dropped them for low sales, but kept Rhett on for solo stuff. So he was trying to leverage both to get the 97's back on the label. Then the solo sales didn't do what the label expected, and they pulled support for the tour (ergo, why there are no "Instigators" anymore).<P>Haven't heard how all this stuff has shaken out yet. That report was from ~2 weeks ago.
