Title: Best show you saw at the Bayou
Post by: Charlie Nakatestes, Japanese Golfer on August 09, 2005, 04:07:00 pm
Anyone?

I think the only show I saw at the Bayou was Whiskeytown in 1998. They played a 20 minute Sonic Youth cover that singlehandedly cleared out half of the audience.

I saw dada there on Thanksgiving eve.

Do I get any hipster style pts for this one?

"In 1992, dada exploded on the scene with their critically acclaimed debut release, Puzzle (#2 Billboardâ??s Heatseeker Chart) on Miles Copelandâ??s now defunct, I.R.S. Records. The single "Dizz Knee Land", (#5 on Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart), set the alternative radio movement - just then hitting it's stride - on fire"

The Sweet were a whole lotta fun.

Voivod w/ Soundgarden & Faith No More. A lot of people left after Soundgarden.

The Stray Cats when Robert Plant showed up after a Page & Plant gig at Cap Center. He didn't get up on stage though. I heard Lois kicked 'em all out after they got too rowdy in the dressing room.

The Tragically Hip on their first-ever US tour.

I was probably at the same Smithereens show.

NRBQ ruled the Bayou back in the late 1970s and 80s, and this is coming from a guy who saw groups like U2 and The Kinks play there.

That brings back a bad memory... whoever ran the PA music was always BLASTING that Smithereens CD that begins with Top Of The Pops... that was one of those venues that insisted on BLASTING music right up until the second the live band started playing.  Groups hate that so much. The impact of a live band starting a set is so much better if they aren't following loud music; in fact it's best if there's NO music before they come on

Guns n' Roses original line-up on their first tour for Appetite for Destruction.  Shortly thereafter I quit school bought some atrociously tight pants and moved to Hollywood.

XTC, The Stranglers, The Plasmatics, Oingo Boingo, Joan Jett, Nina Hagen, and Iggy Pop were really fun shows.

(and having the Insect Surfers perform on my birthday was pretty special too.....)

I saw the Ramones there a bunch of times in the 80s.  I think The Smithereens actually opened for them.

The Slickees a ton of times.

I accidentally saw Southside Johnny there once.

The only thing I remember about seeing The Tragically Hip was that it was on my birthday and I had free tickets.

Edit:I may be wrong, shirt says nothing about the venue.I'll check with Hoot, as that is who I went with, along with Eddie Spleen and his brother Mark.I may have went back and checked Ian at the Bayou due to that show,as I noticed he played there shortly thereafter. So,either way it would be Ian Hunter.

Repeating myself as I only went a couple times before it closed and moving here in 97...

But Smithereens "Especially For You" tenth anniversary show where the band did the album front to back... Wow what a show

Got to see Too Much Joy before they self combusted, heard the story about how they got visited by the Secret Service...

Richard Thompson circa '83 mebbe '84 or even '85, I dunno. Anyway, Ubu's David Thomas opened the show by telling stories, many while holding an egg in the palm of his hand. Thompson and his band --couldn't have been 'Hand of Kindness' tour could it?---
were all wearing running shorts and t-shirts that were made at like Spencer's Gifts or something, bearing a slogan trumpeting RT's running prowess. Maybe Jim Fixx showed up for the encore? Nah, he mighta been dead by then. RIP Jimmy! After a show with some stunning guitar solos, "Calvary Cross" fer shure, my friend and I were assaulted by a group of Marines up on M Street for looking too "new wave". Never shoulda tried to get into Winston's...

The Robert Gordon show wasn't bad.

Saw The Fixx there too back in the late 80s and they were pretty good.

Best of all though was Midge Ure.
(Midge may have played on the same bill as The Fixx but I'm not sure of that.)

One of the most enjoyable shows was Life, Sex and Death opening for Lynch Mob, the horrendous solo band put together by Dokken's guitarist George Lynch.  LSD's was a power rock band from L.A. that had a creepy supposed homeless guy named Stanley as their singer.  It was schticky but cool and they were a really good band for that time and style of music.  LSD starts out and the hair farmers are all "what the fuck is this" and all'a that and within five minutes they blow the roof off the place and have the place going nuts.  Stanley made fun of George Lynch the entire show.

So they finish up and Lynch Mob comes onstage with big fans strategically positioned by the monitors to blow their hair around.  Compared to LSD they were pretty pathetic and the crowd started chanting "Stanley Stanley Stanley" between and during every song.

Lynch Mob's singer got upset and in one of the worst lead singer moments I have ever seen yelled, "FUCK THAT HOMELESS ASSHOLE" and stomped offstage to a loud chorus of boos...show over.  All of a sudden from the balcony you hear Stanley in full weirdo voice yell, "Hey that girl with the pretty hair wants to fuck me!!!"

Maybe you had to be there but it was fully entertaining.

X with the movie URGH!, Bow Wow Wow w/Bush Tetras, Simple Minds w/Martha and the Muffins were all good shows.

Anabella's halter top breaking and her asking the audience if anyone had a safety pin was amusing.

One of the most memorable would have to be the Frankie Goes to Hollywood show on election night 1984....the height of Frankiemania....Paul Rutherford donning a Reagan mask and burying his head in Holly Johnson's crotch during "Two Tribes".....the place went ballistic!.....then the after party at Cagney's....good times....also great shows there by the Psychedelic Furs on the "Forever Now" tour and also The Cure for "The Top".....

I was at that Jellyfish show...weird space.

FYI, Judybats are at the Rams Head in Annapolis on Friday, Aug 19.  I saw them at a street fair in Chicago last weekend and it was fantastic.  If you can get out, I highly recommend it.  I'm at table 107!!

Yes, they did play "Convalescing in Spain," in fact.  They played a lot -- over an hour and a half.  Everything I would have wanted except "Margot Known as Missy."  I never got their self-released Judybats '00 album, but they played several songs I didn't know -- at least 5.

Cool, bearman -- you're virtually right beside us!

Back to The Bayou...........

Echo & The Bunnymen- "Crocodiles" one of the first 3 or 4 shows they ever played in the U.S.
5 bucks at the door. Wow,they were YOUNG back then. What a show.

Split Enz- "True Colours" Pure pop with lotsa hooks from the Finn Brothers. This was a cool evening.

The Ramones- at least twice. Rocked the joint.

Jason & The Scorchers- twice. Come get Dixie Fried. Hank Williams meets the Ramones.

Iggy Pop- "Soldier" tour with Ivan Kral from the Patti Smith group. We were really smashed and young and dumb and kept throwing quarters at Iggy.
He got pissed off and said something like "I wish you little bastards would quit with the fucking coins....they HURT.....I'm done with you!"....we stopped, the show was too damn good to have him walk off the stage.....

More great shows I saw at the Bayou...

 Mary My Hope

Drivin' n' Cryin' & Jason & the Scorchers

 Arc Angels

 At the Ontario...

The English Beat...who opened? Was it the Go-Gos?

 The Cure

Echo & the Bunnymen...for some reason I think Billy Bragg opened for them?

I saw Joe King Carrasco & the Crowns there but can't remember if they were opening for someone else or headlining.

i saw R.E.M., before having ever heard of them, warm up for The English Beat and being underwhelmed musicially, but sure do remember Stipe standing still front and center while Buck and Mills bounced all over the place.  needless to say once I heard the record i was a fan, until "Losing My Religion" era tours..

I finally googled it and they did 2 shows that night at the Ontario. Not sure which I attended but it left a lasting impression, having a few of my idols involved in the 1st presidential election I could vote in,but I digress. After more thought I'm gonna go with Patti Smith at Bayou when she was so wasted she fell off the piano and PIL's show at the Ontario as my faves.Although both the Furs and Cure shows Jonas mentioned were stellar.

Man, that's when Stipe had all that curly hair almost entirely obscuring his face...he had a long road to charisma on stage.  Meanwhile Buck always tickled the hell out of me -- that much joy is infectious.

That '00 album blew. So did whatever that new group Heiskell made after they broke up. I'd be interested in seeing them again if the majority of the band is back together. Or if they're playing Convalescing...so maybe i'll be getting tickets.

It's weird but they were mostly just popular around here...HFS played the heck out of Native Son but they didn't get populer nationally till the third album (if they did at all).

But I can sure tell you the worst show! You know the one Seth. New Order during their 1st US tour. Probably the worst concert ever! Through no fault of your's, I might add.

The entire show started extremely late and NO was drunk out of their minds and put on one God awful show. Rumor has it that you had to go across the street into the deli and pull their asses out and kick them onstage.

 Care to elaborate?

My elaboration would be that I too, after many years, confuse old shows venues that no longer exist.Funny how that works.Chalk it up to youth, state of mind at the time and the actual amount of time passed.I love when memories get triggered when someone else happens to mention something that rings a bell. Then it comes flowing back, like it was just yesterday.

New Order at the Ontario...

time for the band to go on and nobody could find the bass player...manager went on instead pretending to play bass while we dragged the real one out of the Cafe Don across the street...I say pretended because the whole show was on tape

I remember people camped outside my office door demanding refunds because the band sucked...they didn't think it was on tape, they just thought they should get their money back because they didn't like them...no I didn't give it to them (if I gave people money back every time a band sucked I'd be living in a small apartment in Hyattsville)

we assumed they'd never be able to show their face here again, but then Blue Monday happened and thay sold out the Warner in a day...they pretended to play there too, but nobody cared

a quick peek at the New Order Gigography indicates that six days before that Ontario Theatre show, they played in Detroit where Blue Monday had definitely become a hit at the time.  St. Andrews was packed to the gills on an insanely hot night, felt like 100+, with little to no air condition in the club.  New Order waited until the absolute last minute at 1am so as they could get thier set in before the 2am curfew.  Not a very pleasent experience.

saw them a couple years later with Gene Loves Jezebel and Echo and the Bunnymen headlining, and the only way to differentiate songs was by identifying the beats spewing out of the drum machine

My fave Ontario show: Thin Lizzy, Dec. 9, 1980. The day after John Lennon died.  The power went out during "Boys are Back" but Lynott and the band carried on, with just the drums pounding and the crowd engaged in a back and forth "boys are back" chant. Impromptu, professional, and awesome.
