Does anyone know if he's going to be playing songs by dc4c/postal service? Or is it just stuff that he plays alone?
-
None. Stay home.

I'll be at the early show as well.

ahhh @ the thriller. wonder if he does the dance.

i gotta say, these set lists are looking good. i'm pretty excited for tonight's show.
but i have to say just this one thing: for this show and the death cab show a few months ago at D.A.R., i've done the good fan thing of buying tickets the moment they were released. but at the D.A.R. show, the second night's set was waay better than the original night. i'll be pretty bummed if the late show is better than the early show, especially since the early show will be more of the bigger fans. (generalization, i know, but still.)
-
for those who can't make the show (for example, stuck in germantown), NPR will be streaming the show (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=9935188).
running home to change, hope i can make it on time for rice's set...

Man, it sounds so good so far. I wish I had decided to spend the money.

Agreed. I'm regretting passing on this show. If smackette hears this I'm going to have to find some tix to the sold out Filmore show.
-
What a fantastic show!
Honestly, I haven't been listening to DCFC or Postal Service at all lately, so I wasn't exactly excited for this show. But that all changed about two words into Gibbard's first song. I absolutely loved the minimalist, almost delicate arrangements, intimately performed. Beautiful. I enjoyed this show more than the full band Death Cab shows I've seen in the past. The crowd was really into it, whispering nearly every lyric to nearly every song, not too loudly though so as not to overwhelm the performance. The sound quality wasn't all that great for the opening acts, but it was spot on perfect for Ben.
I really enjoyed Jonathan Rice's opening set, particularly his "We're All Stuck Out In The Desert" song, so I picked up his 3-song EP for $3 (A Girl Called Miami). Well, worth it! Besides the aforementioned song, it also includes a duet with Jenny Lewis.
I was less than enthused with David Bazan. I didn't really care for either his singing or his songwriting. I really thought his set dragged, like it might go on forever. Ugh. I realize that I'm probably in the minority here, considering the amount of applause he received at the club.
-
yet another great evening at the club. forgive me, bboard, for i know not what i am about to write... corrections to follow in the morning no doubt.
i got there in time for the second half of rice's set, and other than the aforementioned "we're all stuck", he didn't do much for me. i was surrounded by peeps who wouldn't STFU, so that had a detrimental effect. beyond that, i just didn't feel he connected with me (definitely didn't connect with the crowd). there were some pretty songs under all that noise, but didn't come through.
Bazan was a little better for me, personally. he totally floored the place, from where i was standing (right balcony) when he explained why he was enuciating slowly between songs. "i was upstairs during jonathan (rice's) set, and i couldn't understand anything he was saying... not that i'm complaining (about the noise), it's a gift to be playing here tonight, so to those who can hear me (over the chatter) i hope you enjoy" (my paraphrasing). that managed to get a few folks to STFU. awesome.
ben was simply great. had the place eating out of his palm, and he played to us like a pro. "glove compartement" on the piano was an absolute treat. "all apologies" sounded much better than i was expecting, fit in to the set perfectly. overall, his voice was in top shape. lots of people mouthing words without it being an annoying sing-along.
i left the show on a total high. so high, in fact, that the lady and i drove back home, i had a quick bite to eat... and returned to the club for the second show, bought a ticket for face out front. yes, that good.
first show: crowd = 9/10, ben = 8. second show: reverse. at the second show, there were two groups of frat boys who wouldn't STFU ("GIBBARD, YOU RULE!!! YEAH MAAAAN, WOOOOO!!!!"). ben remarked as much during a quiet passage of "we looked like giants" (he made a similar remark during the first show, although less cutting - more along the lines of "wow, what a weird reaction" - different song, can't remember which one at the moment). despite this, another way-above-average performance. during ben's second set, somebody from The Office (supposedly) came out with a guitar and got some banter going... i've never seen the american series (yes, seriously) so i'm only going on what people around me were saying.
only rice opened for the second show, and ben came out to duet on the opening song - definitely lent some cred to rice. much better audience reception, overall.
the club did indeed sound amazing, again - that's two nights in a row. has something been done/changed to the PA? whatever it is, please keep it up.
zzz... tomorrow is going to suck, yet again.

Notes: Tim from the TV Show, The Office, was at the club. He was the guy who got up on stage and Ben sang him a song to get off stage.
Personally, I thought the second show was better

where is "couches in alleys" (the styrofoam song) on there? i cannot believe i heard that song played -- i love it and was amazed he pulled that one out!
i think my above comments in my previous post were kind of selfish. please strike those from the record.
i enjoyed both jonathan and david, too. and i completely understand how loud the audience was during their sets. but i have to say this: i was standing maybe 10 people away from jonathan during his set and i couldn't hear a word he said. yes, the crowd drowned his voice out, but he mumbled through his banter. if you want people to hear you, you can't mumble.
further, i appreciate the fact that jonathan was frustrated with the crowd. but he just walked off the stage when he was done -- no "thanks", no "see you later". just walked off. i was dissapointed to see he couldn't say thanks to those who actually came early to see him. maybe it's just me...oh well.
ben was fantastic. amazing show. i wish i could have stuck around to see the second one -- this is the second time in a row "we looked like giants" was played at the other show! at least i didn't miss "styrofoam plates". can't wait to see him or death cab again.
-
I love Tim!
aw, sorry I missed it.
-
so how excited was i that he played farmer chords?
extremely.
amazing show. i wish i had been able to get tickets to the late show as well, but i'm not complaining... i'm just happy to have seen him at all.
-
and wait. tim? wtf? who is that... i can't even find a credited tim anywhere.
are we sure it wasn't toby? or tony? or even todd? oh dear god help me if it were todd and i missed it.

i meant Jim, from The Office.

sorry, i have no photos.

I have the early setlist the same as bizou311® except I have 'Couches In Alleys' (Styrofoam / Gibbard) in place of Breeze?
-
Aw, man, I wish he had been at the early show. I love "The Office."
-
you guys didn't miss anything. the whole interaction was kinda awkweird... basically he came on stage with a guitar as if to do a duet, ben at first was confused, then asked him to leave and finally got him off the stage with a promise to "play him a song". i couldn't tell if it was all scripted (and ben was a bad actor); or if it was real, i.e. he busted unannounced on to the stage and ben had to talk him into leaving. the whole thing was over in a minute and a half. it wasn't funny or even entertaining, really.
and and i mis-named "title and registration" as "glove compartement" above, but was actually talking about "passenger seat"... it was late, i was tired, they're both car-related...
great shows :)
-
well, i mean it makes sense. they do know each other - ben was tapped to play a small part in john krasinski's adaptation of 'brief interviews with hideous men.'
and with their background like that, it makes it being awkward seem well...awkward.

from USA Today's Pop Candy Blog (http://blogs.usatoday.com/popcandy/2007/05/jim_halpert_in_.html)
sidenote: i'm obviously fan girl Nicole Y. at the end. i'm so lame about this.
Jim Halpert in the spotlight
This morning my inbox has been flooded with tales of John Krasinski's appearance onstage with Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard at Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 Club last night. According to you guys, Krasinski surprised the audience by grabbing a guitar and professing his love of ... Wilco?
So what's the connection between The Office's Jim Halpert and the indie rocker? Gibbard has a role in Krasinski's upcoming adaptation of David Foster Wallace's Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. It seems they get along quite well.
Some Pop reader stories about the evening:
From Kelly K.: "A few songs in, I look up in the VIP balcony. ... I notice a guy who looks like Jim from The Office. A few songs later he disappears ... and materializes next to Ben Gibbard with a guitar! He banters with Ben and then sings a little bit of a song my friend identifies as a Wilco song. Then John asks Ben to play 'the song.' Ben Gibbard then launches into a Death Cab song.
"Everyone had their cell phone cameras out. I think everyone was a little confused as to why he was there, because you know in D.C. we normally KNOW when and why celebrities are in town ...
"Ben Gibbard + John Krasinski = BEST.NIGHT.EVER."
From M.A.: "I work at the club, and when he jumped on stage in between songs, a few of the door staff thought he was some random guy from the crowd. We were really close to jumping on stage and kicking him out. It wasn't until Ben talked to him on stage and reciprocated his presence that we realized they were friends. I don't think anyone actually realized who was on stage with Ben until after the show since he was wearing a hat."
From Nicole Y.: "Now, I was at the early show (which was amazing, especially the cover of All Apologies) and will absolutely flip out of this is true and I missed it, not to mention I was already slightly upset I had to miss The Office for the show to begin with. More importantly, WHO HAS PHOTOS?!?"
You heard Nicole -- if you snapped a pic (or see one elsewhere), send it my way. And dang, I knew I should've gotten tickets to this!

He received applause, but no one was really listening. I haven't seen the club that chatty in a long time. I guess everyone was just anticipating Ben at that point. (I'd like to see him at Jammin' Java or Iota...or the club again on a less chatty night.) I only saw two of his songs b/c it took me 2 hours to get to the club and I left work early. (I hate to join in on the complain parade, but the early / late set times killed me.)
I missed Jonathan Rice, who I wished I had also seen. Since I see a lot of singer/songwriters, at first, Ben's set was a "normal" show for me. Then, it picked up, perhaps about the time he went to the piano. I enjoyed his banter, relaxed and positive energy. Also enjoyed that song about Los Angeles..and the other from his collaboration.
I could have gone w/o the Nirvana cover. (And the guy yelling "F yeah!" at a pivotal point of a song. That's like achieving too soon. Totally ruined the moment.)
I just wish it had been longer. I guessed the second show might be better...he was getting into a groove. Wish I had known about NPR!

Pretty good show. It was great hearing some Postal Service songs and the Styrofoam song, but for most of the DCFC songs, I found myself wishing the rest of the band was there. Kinda surprised (and disappointed) he didn't play "District"

I'm with you, though I think I disliked him more than you. Really downbeat and down energy, and I don't know why he was doing that Stephen Wright monotone robot talk, but it bugged the hell out of me. Yet he got really loud applause. I'm not familiar with Pedro & The Lion, so I assumed the place was full of Pedro fans who would clap if he shat onstage.
Another odd bit to the evening was how incredibly long the food food line was! During Bazan, it went all the way to mid-room!! Very weird (though I guess due to the early show time), and made for a kind of stinky show with all that hot food around.
Ben was great. Better than I expected, though I wasn't sure really what to expect (I like The Postal Service more than DCFC, so I was in to the ability to hear some of those songs...)

love that song. that would have been interesting to see haha, although apparently it was too awkward to even be funny...
-
I'm really, really glad that Ben decided to do this tour. It was fantastic to hear some of those songs, songs that one would normally never hear. I've never seen The Postal Service, so it was great to hear those. And since I've seen Death Cab seven different times (five of them in Seattle), it was nice to hear Ben give some of their songs a different perspective. I was at the early show, by the way, though I wouldn't have minded catching the late show. It's just that I live nearly two hours away. :)

DC did not get the cover of Mountain Goats' Palmcorder Yanja! Now, I don't feel so bad about missing the show :) :D

It resulted in a pretty funny moment, though, when Ben got that really confused look on his face and then, quite casually and matter-of-factly, repeated "F*ck yeah." into the mic. [/b]
Couldn't agree with you more regarding the crowd.
Yeah, Ben did turn it into a funny...I thought he responded in question form as if he thought the moment was slightly ruined as well.
In the end, it was an enjoyable show and overall, the crowd was pretty tame and gracious.

"Fuck yeah? [crowd laughs, then cheers] That's like the last thing I would yell at that point...If heaven and hell decide..."

I was at the late show, and I agree with the earlier poster that the crowd was annoying the living shit out of me.
After I was able to get past the posse of girls with cell phones who must have taken 500 pictures each of the show, I was right behind those previously mentioned drunk frat boys.
These dumbasses were dead center, probably six people from the front and could do nothing but giggle about how "gay" the show and Ben were, and yell out stupid shit.
Ben sounded great. Absolutely great song list (we looked like giants! Woohoo!) But the crowd was totally ruining the show for me. I found myself wondering what the reaction would be if I'd have dragged out hecklers in a chokehold :op Oh, and Ben told the guys yelling "for the next three songs, just shut the fuck up." Should it really come to that?
Oh, and "Jim's" cameo on stage was very awkward. I think the whole crowd was like "eh? is that who I think it is? huh?" and then Jimbo was gone.
